<p><span>This paper reports a study on mitigation of propagation impairments on Earth–space communication links. The study uses time diversity as a technique for mitigating rain propagation impairment in order to rectify rain fade. Rain attenuation time series along earth-to-satellite link were measured for two years period at 12.255 GHz in Malaysia. The time diversity technique was applied on measured rain fade to investigate the level of possible improvement in system. Time diversity gain from measured one-minute rain attenuation for two years period was estimated and significant improvement was observed with different delays of time. These findings will be utilized as a useful tool for link designers to apply time diversity as a rain fade mitigation technique in Earth-satellite communications systems.</span></p>

In satellite communication, Link Budget analysis is the most important part to determine gains and losses of signals from the transmitter to the receiver. Most importantly, it investigates system performance and optimum power which must be received at the receiver channel. In some cases, this information could be generated, saved for past data analysis, and share with peer users which are not found in existing web tools. Thus, it is obvious to design a new Link Budget calculator with users, database, and data retrieval support. This work focuses on designing a Link Budget web tool for X-band satellite communication through literature study and comparative analysis. The X-Band calculator is designed based on HTML, PHP, Javascript, and MySQL by ensuring several security issues, and can be accessed through mobile devices. This paper also focuses on the necessary equations of Link Budget for Uplink (Tx); Satellite; Downlink (Rx); Azimuth, Elevation, Distance analysis; and Rain attenuation. Though, comparative assessments among various web tools show some fluctuations, overall outputs show satisfactory results with small % of Errors (PoE) ensuring reliability and viability of the proposed X-Band tool for practical use.

In the design of satellite communication link, rain attenuation statistics is essential information for system designer to realistically determine link availability and provide means to combat system degradation. Due to the limitation of available measured data in equatorial regions especially for high frequencies (Ka-band and above), the prediction model is the best way to obtain rain attenuation statistics. This paper presents statistical analysis of rain attenuation at Ka-band by applying the Stratiform Convective-Synthetic Storm Technique (SC-SST) model taking advantage from local weather features from rain rate time series. The study on seasonal and diurnal variability is also presented in this paper to provide good insight in the design and implementation of fade margin.

Currently, smart farming is considered an effective solution to enhance the productivity of farms; thereby, it has recently received broad interest from service providers to offer a wide range of applications, from pest identification to asset monitoring. Although the emergence of digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), has led to significant advances in the smart farming industry, farming operations still need more efficient solutions. On the other hand, the utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, is growing rapidly across many civil application domains. This paper aims to develop a farm monitoring system that incorporates UAV, LPWAN, and IoT technologies to transform the current farm management approach and aid farmers in obtaining actionable data from their farm operations. In this regard, an IoT-based water quality monitoring system was developed because water is an essential aspect in livestock development. Then, based on the Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN®) technology, a multi-channel LoRaWAN® gateway was developed and integrated into a vertical takeoff and landing drone to convey collected data from the sensors to the cloud for further analysis. In addition, to develop LoRaWAN®-based aerial communication, a series of measurements and simulations were performed under different configurations and scenarios. Finally, to enhance the efficiency of aerial-based data collection, the UAV path planning was optimized. Measurement results showed that the maximum achievable LoRa coverage when operating on-air via the drone is about 10 km, and the Longley–Rice irregular terrain model provides the most suitable path loss model for the scenario of large-scale farms, and a multi-channel gateway with a spreading factor of 12 provides the most reliable communication link at a high drone speed (up to 95 km/h). Simulation results showed that the developed system can overcome the coverage limitation of LoRaWAN® and it can establish a reliable communication link over large-scale wireless sensor networks. In addition, it was shown that by optimizing flight paths, aerial data collection could be performed in a much shorter time than industrial mission planning (up to four times in our case).

AbstractFree-space optical (FSO) communication has the advantages of two of the most predominant data transmission technologies – optical fiber communication and wireless communication. Most of the technical aspects of FSO are similar to that of optical fiber communication, with major difference in the information signal propagation medium which is free space in case of FSO rather than silica glass in optical fiber communication. One of the most important applications of FSO is inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) links which will be deployed in the future in space. The IsOWC links have many advantages over the previously existing microwave satellite communication technologies such as higher bandwidth, lower power consumption, low cost of implementation, light size, and weight. In this paper, modeling and performance analysis of a 10-Gbps inter-satellite communication link with two satellites separated at a distance of 1,200 km has been done using OPTISYSTEM simulation software. Performance has been analyzed on the basis of quality factor, signal to noise ratio (SNR), and total power of the received signal.

AbstractIn the present study, the application of free space optics (FSO) transmission system to realize a long-reach high-altitude platform (HAP)-to-satellite communication link has been exploited. High-speed information transmission without interference is accomplished using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Further, the information capacity of the proposed system is increased by employing mode division multiplexing (MDM). We have investigated the proposed MDM-OFDM-HAP-to-satellite FSO transmission system performance over varying FSO range, diameter of the receiver, pointing errors, and input power. Also, an improved transmission performance of the proposed system using a square root module is reported.
