We propose a spectrometer-free refractive index sensor based on a graphene plasmonic structure. The spectrometer-free feature of the device is realized thanks to the dynamic tunability of graphene’s chemical potential, through electrostatic biasing. The proposed sensor exhibits a 1566 nm/RIU sensitivity, a 250.6 RIU−1 figure of merit in the optical mode of operation and a 713.2 meV/RIU sensitivity, a 246.8 RIU−1 figure of merit in the electrical mode of operation. This performance outlines the optimized operation of this spectrometer-free sensor that simplifies its design and can bring terahertz sensing one step closer to its practical realization, with promising applications in biosensing and/or gas sensing.

A plasmonic refractive index (RI) sensor based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with concentric double rings resonator (CDRR) is proposed and investigated numerically. Utilizing the novel supermodes of the CDRR, the FWHM of the resonant wavelength can be modulated, and a sensitivity of 1060 nm/RIU with high figure of merit (FOM) 203.8 is realized in the near-infrared region. The unordinary modes as well as the influence of structure parameters on the sensing performance are also discussed. Such plasmonic sensor with simple framework and high optical resolution could be applied to on-chip sensing systems and integrated optical circuits. Besides, the special cases of bio- sensing and triple rings are also discussed.

Abstract A tunable dual Fano-like plasmonic structure consisting of metal-insulator-metal (MIM), baffle and a rectangular cavity containing two identical rectangular metal blocks is obtained. Numerical simulation results show that there are dual Fano resonances in the transmission spectrum of the structure, which can be tuned by changing the geometric parameters of the structure. In addition, due to the apparent asymmetry of the Fano resonances, the system was developed as an effective refractive index sensor (RIS) with a sensitivity of 853 nm/RIU and figure of merit (FOM) of 1631. It is considered that this structure has important application value in high integrated photonic circuit.
