ABSTRACT Twenty-six D. pseudoobscura strains isogenic for xanthine dehydrogenase alleles from Mesa Verde, Colorado, were tested for differences in the biochemical properties of different allelic forms of xanthine dehydrogenase. No significant differences in binding affinity (Km) or substrate specificity of the enzyme were found. Significant variation among strains, in activity (V  max) and among electromorphs, as well as among strains, in thermolability was found. For the few strains tested, the activity and thermolability differences were shown to co-segregate with the electrophoretic mobility of the variant allele.

AbstractThe site of Las Madres near Galisteo, New Mexico, has yielded a provocative array of culture traits, each deviating from recognized Anasazi norms. Regional types of black-on-white sherds were encountered, accompanied by variants. Few Glaze I Red sherds appeared on the surface, but excavations revealed them in considerable quantity from top to bottom; there are fewer Glaze I Yellow and Polychrome representations. Tree-ring dates and ceramic materials indicate occupation from the late 1200's to about 1370. A transitional situation is suggested by bird bones, pottery variations, absence of formalized building plan, eclectic burial practices, and lithic artifacts. There is no evidence of direct migration of Mesa Verde people into the Galisteo region.

Studies of Willa Cather refer to Charles Darwin so rarely that one might conclude she hardly knew of him. But at least one recent interpreter has begun to discuss the Darwinian shadow in her work, describing the “Darwinist cartography” in her novelThe Professor's House(1925) and noting the “striking parallels between Cather's mapping of America and that undertaken by her near contemporary, Thorstein Veblen.”
