Death is the most inevitable and irrevocable problem that we face as physicians and human beings. Although many people seldom think about death, when the death of a close friend or relative does occur, everyone is confronted with a feeling of loss and reminder of his or her own mortality. The emotional reaction triggered by such a loss is called mourning. While in decades past it was debated whether or not children mourned, the consensus now is that they do, but not as completely or satisfactorily as adults. The manner in which children mourn is based on their level of development and on the emotional climate provided them. Almost without exception in our society, when a person dies, there is a funeral. More often than not parents do not know whether children should attend funerals. Because of this, they often ask pediatricians, but there is little published data that can be used as a guide for an intelligent response. The purpose of this review is to provide practical guidelines and suggestions that can be discussed with parents when this question arises. FUNERALS IN GENERAL The funeral is the most ancient rite known. Much of what we know about prehistoric cultures comes from burial customs that favored including everyday objects with the corpse.

Αρχικά οι Έλληνες και στη συνέχεια οι Ρωμαίοι, πίστευαν ότι είναι πολλοί οι παράγοντες που βοηθούν την ψυχή να επιταχύνει την ολοκλήρωση της κάθαρσης στην μετά θάνατον ζωή ώστε να καταφέρει να ταξιδέψει σύντομα και με ασφάλεια στον ουρανό. Όπως το νερό εξαγνίζει το σώμα, εκείνοι σκέπτονταν και έναν παρόμοιο τρόπο εξαγνισμού της ψυχής. Οι βασικοί παράγοντες κάθαρσης υπήρξαν αρχικά η φωτιά και στη συνέχεια η μουσική. Ενώ όμως η καύση του σώματος των νεκρών δεν χρησιμοποιούνταν σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις και δεν ήταν διαδεδομένη σε όλες τις κοινωνίες, η μουσική θεωρήθηκε ένα μέσο αέναης ανάβασης προς τον ουρανό και την αιωνιότητα, κοντά στις Μούσες.Τόσο οι Έλληνες όσο και οι Ρωμαίοι έδειξαν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για τη μουσική. Και οι δύο πολιτισμοί χρησιμοποίησαν τη μουσική σε διαφορετικά πεδία δραστηριοτήτων. Για παράδειγμα, ο Σόλων, ο νομοθέτης της Αθήνας, απαίτησε να προσφέρονται μουσικές γνώσεις στους νέους. Επίσης, απαγόρεψε στους σκλάβους να παίζουν μουσική καθώς η μουσική θεωρείτο προνόμιο των ευγενών και των «ελεύθερων» Αθηναίων. Ο Πλάτωνας, στην Πολιτεία, τόνισε ότι η γνώση της μουσικής δεν πρέπει να ακολουθεί τη διδασκαλία της φυσικής αγωγής αλλά να προηγείται αυτής. Συμβούλευε επίσης ανθρώπους από διάφορες ηλικιακές ομάδες να παίζουν μουσική. Η απαγγελία ύμνων και ποιημάτων, τα τραγούδια, η εξύμνηση των θεών και των ηρώων γίνονταν υπό τον ήχο μουσικών οργάνων.Παρά την σημασία του ρόλου της μουσικής στις θρησκευτικές και νεκρώσιμες τελετές, οι λογοτεχνικές και αρχαιολογικές έρευνες πάνω σε αυτό το ζήτημα είναι περιορισμένες, με εξαίρεση λίγες μελέτες. Σε αυτή την εργασία, επικεντρωθήκαμε στη μελέτη της παρουσίας της μουσικής στις ελληνικές και ρωμαϊκές επιμνημόσυνες τελετές αλλά και στις τέχνες. Από τη μία πλευρά, η μελέτη αυτή αποσκοπεί στην εξέταση της θεραπευτικής επίδρασης της μουσικής στις Ορφικές-Πυθαγόρειες συνοδείες. Από την άλλη, η μελέτη επιδιώκει να δείξει πως η εξαγνιστική χρήση της μουσικής υπήρξε αποτέλεσμα των μυστηρίων των ανατολικών θρησκειών που υπήρξαν διαδεδομένες σε συγκεκριμένες χρονικές περιόδους στο Ρωμαϊκό κόσμο. Σε αυτές τις νέες θρησκείες ο θάνατος διαδραμάτιζε κεντρικό ρόλο και η και η χρήση της μουσικής στις επιμνημόσυνες τελετές ήταν εξαιρετικής σημασίας. Επίσης, ο θάνατος (αλλά και η μουσική) ήταν συνδεδεμένα με πρόσωπα όπως η Κυβέλεια Μήτηρ και η θεά Ίσιδα.

The portrayal of the 'Vikings' as an archetypal barbarian 'other,' wreaking death and destruction wherever they went, was already current in the medieval period, but in England the depictions became more extreme in the centuries after the attacks. This paper will focus on the texts and archaeology of ninth- and tenthcentury England and argue that in many respects Scandinavians were not as 'other' as later medieval writers believed. Furthermore, once Scandinavian groups settled in England the notion of 'otherness' appears to have quickly disappeared. Particular attention will be paid to the burial record as a means of identifying probable Scandinavians, and for evidence of acculturation to Anglo- Saxon Christian burial customs.
