Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an approach that involves community members in research, not as research participants, but as partners. However, few studies have examined CBPR projects conducted among African Americans with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI). This article focuses specifically on the Inspiring Change (IC) model, which includes a leadership trio comprised of an academic researcher, health service provider and an African American with lived experience of SPMI. Our purpose is to investigate how the IC model shapes not only how research is conducted but how research is understood and experienced by the community. We achieve this purpose by (1) describing an innovative CBPR model and pilot projects that involved African Americans with SPMI in all stages of the research project; and (2) presenting findings from qualitative interviews conducted with CBPR team members about strengths, challenges and leadership particular to this model of CBPR, an area rarely explored in CBPR literature. With the guidance of an advisory board and the manualised IC curriculum, two CBPR teams initiated and conducted nine-month long research projects focusing on health disparities for African Americans with SPMI. Members of the two CBPR teams (n = 13), which included individuals with lived experience, service providers and researchers, completed qualitative interviews. Benefits of CBPR projects included opportunities to learn, a sense of purpose in helping others and increased trust of research participants. Challenges pertained to disorganisation of leadership, lack of transparency with compensation, time pressures and interpersonal conflicts. These challenges highlight the importance of preparing and supporting those from both academic and lived experience backgrounds in skills necessary to thrive in leadership roles for CBPR projects.

Introduction: As the Arab American population grows in the United States, relatively little has been published about the health status of this population. The purpose of the research was to (1) discover health care perceptions of Arab Americans and (2) identify strategies to ensure the provision of culturally congruent health care. Method: Community-based participatory research methodology was used for this descriptive study. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with Arab Americans residing in northeast Pennsylvania. Results: Three themes were identified: (1) perceptions of health resulting in delays in seeking health care, (2) cultural values and practices resulting in need for culturally congruent provision of care, and (3) mistrust of the U.S. health care system resulting in underutilization of services. Discussion: Results indicate the need for nurses to implement culturally congruent community-based strategies and interventions for meeting health care needs of Arab Americans. By understanding the community’s perceptions and attitudes, nurses will be better positioned to ultimately move toward the goal of reducing health disparities in this underserved population.

Background Older people with multiple chronic conditions and complex health care needs require a comprehensive, accessible and well-coordinated system of services. To address this growing problem, a consortium of acute and community-based health care organisations implemented a ‘Patients First’ model of service integration for the target population. The project evaluation utilised a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods in an action research framework. Findings The evaluation process not only demonstrated the benefits of the project to patients and the health care system, but also contributed to the identification of pivotal components in the model, aspects requiring attention and consequently their refinement. It was also a vehicle for the development of a sense of ownership amongst staff and has evolved into an integral part of the model.

Striking cardiovascular health disparities exist among African-Americans in Minnesota compared to Whites; however, community-based interventions to address cardiovascular disease risk are lacking. This study explored participant perceptions of a culturally tailored, cardiovascular disease prevention program developed using a community-based participatory research process. Research participation perceptions, program benefits, and program satisfaction/acceptability were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach. Overall, acceptability was high. Findings highlight the favorable inclusion of African-Americans (research perception), knowledge gained about healthy lifestyle practices (benefits), and quality of the curriculum/speakers (satisfaction). Community-based participatory research may be useful in fostering the acceptability of behavior change interventions among marginalized African-American communities.

The objective of this study is to examine the cultural views of healthy aging, knowledge and barriers to services, and perception of health sciences research among community-dwelling Chinese older adults in Chicago's Chinatown. This qualitative study is guided by the Precede-Proceed conceptual model with community-based participatory research design. Data analysis is based on eight focus group interviews with Chinese older (age60+) adults (n=78). We used a grounded theory framework to systematically guide the thematic structure of our data. Findings show participants described cultural conception of health in terms of physical function, psychological well-being, social support, and cognitive function. The availability, affordability, and cultural barriers towards health care services were major negative enabling factors that inhibit participants from fulfilling health needs. Perception and knowledge of health sciences research were also discussed. This study has implications for the delivery of culturally appropriate health care services to the Chinese aging population.
