One of the primary concerns of iu-service programs in mathematics is to improve the teacher's conceptual knowledge of mathematics. This is not to imply that the computational and applications aspects of mathematics are of les er importance, for they are of equal importance, but because the conceptual aspect of mathematics in the past has been badly neglected. This paper is concerned with the gain in conceptual knowledge, in particular of arithmetic, of teachers after haYing had inserYice education in mathematics.
