Mesoporous silica can be synthesized by either the alkaline route or the acidic route, both using surfactants as templates. Morphological transformations of mesoporous silica can produce various hierarchical orders. Different morphologies are produced under different synthetic conditions. In the alkaline route, the surfactant/silicate liquid crystal system undergoes phase transformation to form vesicles and further transforms to the hexagonal phase. The results are tubule-within-tubule and hollow pillar-within-sphere structures depending on cosurfactant/surfactant composition. Using nitric acid in the acidic route, one can obtain hierarchical ropes or gyroids depending on stirring conditions. Ammonia hydrothermal treatment can induce further morphological transformation to nanotubes of mesoporous silica.

A lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal consists of oriented molecular assemblies in solution. If the molecules are chiral, the helical pattern of orientational order is revealed by the stripes seen with polarized optical microscopy.

Density functional theory of rod-coil diblock copolymers, developed recently by the authors, has been generalised and used to study the liquid crystal ordering and microphase separation effects in the hexagonal, lamellar and nematic phases. The translational order parameters of rod and coil monomers and the orientational order parameters of rod-like fragments of the copolymer chains have been determined numerically by direct minimization of the free energy. The phase diagram has been derived containing the isotropic, the lamellar and the hexagonal phases which is consistent with typical experimental data. The order parameter profiles as functions of temperature and the copolymer composition have also been determined in different anisotropic phases. Finally, the spatial distributions of the density of rigid rod fragments and of the corresponding orientational order parameter in the hexagonal phase have been calculated.

In this paper, we are interested in proving the existence of a weak martingale solution of the stochastic smectic-A liquid crystal system driven by a pure jump noise in both 2D and 3D bounded domains. We prove the existence of a global weak martingale solution under some non-Lipschitz assumptions on the coefficients. The construction of the solution is based on a Faedo–Galerkin approximation, a compactness method and the Skorokhod representation theorem. In the two-dimensional case, we prove the pathwise uniqueness of the weak solution, which implies the existence of a unique probabilistic strong solution.
