The results of determining the content and composition of aliphatic hydrocarbons (HCs) in suspended matter on the geochemical barrier of the river (Ob, Yenisei, Lena, Khatanga, Indigirka, Kolyma) - the sea (Kara, Laptev, and East Siberian), obtained in 2015-2017, were presented. It was shown that the distribution of HC concentrations in general with the content of the suspended matter. Losses in HC concentrations in the zone of mixing of river and sea waters in some cases exceeded 90% of their removal by the river. In the pelagial of the seas, the HCs were closed to the background (2-7 µg/l). The behavior and composition of HCs depends on the characteristics of the catchment area of the rivers, the sampling season and the time of day (tide, outflow). The influence of anthropogenic inflows was established only in the Ob Bay, where the composition of alkanes is close to oil and the HCs was 86 µg/mg of the suspension. The remaining samples are dominated by natural hydrocarbons.

AbstractIn the belt of the Polish Uplands, including the Holy Cross Region, lakes occur sporadically. In some places, however, they are somewhat more abundant. They are usually objects with a small surface area. The majority of them have not been subject to thorough investigation. Therefore, the objective of the paper is the expansion of knowledge regarding these lakes. The paper among others presents the characteristics of several lakes with aeolian genesis located on the Przedbórz Upland in the catchment area of the Wierna River and in the Nida Basin near the towns of Busko-Zdrój and Pińczów. The study results determine the morphometric parameters of the lakes, also pointing to an exceptionally high variability of physical and chemical water properties, as well as the possibility of periodical disappearance of the lakes. Moreover, the study results provide a necessary and solid basis for further investigation of the lakes, which in the context of the observed increasingly serious water deficit and decrease in the level of surface waters and groundwaters is undoubtedly of high importance.

AbstractThe present paper, with reference to the Motru catchment area, contributes to the hydrochemical studies at an international level and to the completion of the characteristics regarding the chemical flow in Romania. In this regard, it emphasizes once again the dependence between the content of dissolved salts (fixed residue — mg/l) on the one hand and the lithological conditions, human activity, flow and the surface of the catchments on the other hand. The calculation and the analysis of the chemical flow for the Motru catchment area (located in the south-west of Romania) was performed on the basis of two parameters: the average flow of dissolved chemical substances (mg/s) and specific average chemical flow (t/kmp year) recorded at the monitoring stations on the Motru River and its tributaries during the period 2005–2009.The values obtained (for example: 2.63 mg/s and 47.7 t/km2 year, at the Fata Motrului station, on the Motru River, in 2009) confirm the importance of the areal factors of natural background in the analysis of chemical flow as a morpho-dynamic process and implicitly for the chemical quality of surface waters.

The evaluation concerns selected indices of oxygen regime and of basic physical and chemical indices: BSK5, N-NO3-, N-NH4+, P-PO43-, the total phosphorus and dissolved matters. A particular attention is paid to a comparison of average levels for the whole observed period and for the last five years. The indices of quality are selected to register mainly local sources of pollution which most influence the quality of water in the Ohře river and in its affluents.

Subcarpathia is one of the richest regions in surface waters in the Ukraine. Due to its geographical, relief and climatic conditions, it belongs to the active precipitation zone, where great floods frequently occur. As a result of many years of observation, it can be concluded that the interactions of many natural factors can lead to various floods in the catchment area of the river Tisza. These are mostly hydro-meteorological factors, which can lead to great floods with the characteristics of the formed flow. Human activity also significantly influences the occurance of floods: clearing, which can accelerate the process of the runoff, ploughing in the catchment area, which can lead to erosion and the utilisation of areas endangered by floods for various economic sectors.A series of questions arose in recent years regarding the formation of floods: what could be the causes of floods and what actions need to be made to prevent them. The evaluation of floods made us conclude that passive protection by using dams does not always ensure protection against floods as these were constructed in different times for different water levels. Many factors can affect the whole process which cannot be foreseen, therefore the development of new solutions and new technologies is necessary in flood protection.

Outcomes of studying of the urbanized environment impact on the status of the Podborenka River that is the part of the catchment area of the Izhevsk Reservoir, an important city-forming body, are presented. The river hydrological and hydro/chemical characteristics and the copper content dynamics in surface waters during the main hydrological phases have been discussed. It has been found that the main mass of copper is supplied into the water body from the local relief with the atmospheric precipitation surface runoff.

Some issues of the determination of agriculture-induced nutrient load upon watercourses including nitrogen and phosphorous carryover from agricultural lands, as well as the said elements accumulation on the catchment area due to cattle-breeding development have been considered with the Kama River basin as a study case. Measures on mitigation of this load upon watercourses have been proposed.

The principal purpose of this study is to build stochastic neuronal models, for the prediction of heavy metal, contents in the surface waters of the Oued Inaouen catchment area of the TAZA region, according to their Physico-chemical parameters; we have carried out a comparative study: the multiple linear regression (MLR) method and the artificial neural network (ANN) approach. The following statistical indicators were used to evaluate the performance of the stochastic models developed by neural network and MLR: The sum of the quadratic errors (SSE) and the determination coefficient (R²), also through the study of fit graphs. The results show that the predictive modelling using artificial neural networks is very effective. This performance shows a non-linear relation between the studied Physico-chemical characteristics and the heavy metal contents in the surface waters of the Oued Inaouen catchment area.
