This paper describes an experimental investigation of a technique for the measurement of surface roughness of “ground” surfaces using fiber-optics. A pair of fiber-optic bundles of similar specifications are used to carry both the incident light to and the reflected from the object surface at different angles of incidence. It has been shown that the ratio of reflected intensities is found to vary inversely as the cube of the average surface roughness.

A number of studies of explanted metallic femoral heads have shown scratches or damage caused by bone cement, bone or metallic particles. This damage has been cited as a cause of increased wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cups. In this laboratory study, small scratches 2 μm deep were made on smooth stainless steel surfaces at a spacing of 10 mm. These individual scratches were found to increase the wear rate of UHMWPE by a factor of 30 in unidirectional sliding and a factor of 70 in reciprocating motion. It is of particular concern that a single small scratch, which is not detected by the average surface roughness measurement Ra can cause such a dramatic increase in the wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.

To solve the problems of low processing efficiency and poor glass surface quality when using rare earth polishing powder to grind super-hard K9 glass. The potential, phase structure, surface morphology, and particle size distribution of the nano-rare earth polishing powder were characterized. Compare the evaluation indexes such as polishing efficiency, surface morphology, and contact angle after the polishing process is changed. The results of the comparative study show that the average surface roughness of the glass after heating ultrasonic polishing process is 0.9064 nm, the polishing rate reaches 0.748 μm/min, the average surface roughness of the glass without heating ultrasonic polishing process is 1.3175 nm, and the polishing rate reaches 0.586 μm/min, the ultrasonic assisted polishing process is superior to the conventional polishing process. The heating ultrasonic method provides experimental basis for precise and rapid processing.

The paper investigates in-process signal usage in turning for indirect surface roughness measurement. Based on theoretical surface roughness value and in-process signal, a model is proposed for surface roughness evaluation. Time surface roughness and in-process signal surface roughness correlation based analysis is performed to characterize tool wear component behavior among others. Influencing parameters are grouped based on their behavior in time. Moreover, Digital Object Memory based solution and algorithm is proposed to automate indirect surface roughness measurement process.
