The essay focusses on metaphors as linguistic representations of symbolic violence and their argumentative function in respect of group specific social practice. By the means of a corpuslinguistic study on two text corpora containing texts by right-wing extremist authors on one hand and by members of a populist movement on the other hand it will be shown, how the speakers of these groups conceptualize outgroups as non-human entities and as such refer on them linguistically. Furthermore, it will be highlighted how this kind of language use contributes to the speakers’ communities’ argumentation “against the enemy” and what kind of potential consequences on social practice this might have.

This article discusses the symbiotic relationship of mutualism between mass media andterrorism. Whether we realize it or not, acts of terrorism in the homeland are still interestingand economically valuable news material in front of the mass media. On the other hand, onthe part of terrorists, the news about terrorist acts actually becomes a strategic campaignarea to show their existence. The research uses a qualitative approach to narrative analysismethod. The results of the study are www.okezone.com and www.tribunnews.com placingthe terror terror events in Medan Mapolrestabes as interesting and economically valuablenews material. The style of the news flow is arranged with a choice of tense, dramatic andsensational nuances of words. In addition, the display of photo and video illustrationsshortly after the explosion also aims to display as if the news of the explosion event is true, not engineering, objective and valid. The combination technique of choice of words, storyline, placement techniques and the size of photos and videos all aim to make the emotions ofthe reader participate dissolved in a tense situation as the situation at the scene of theexplosion. The practice of compiling this kind of news flow is called, as Jean Baudrillard'spractice of simulation. The practice of simulation through the practice of compiling newslines and the touch of visual image technology will eventually create conditions ofhyperreality. Namely the conditions between reality will be mixed with the pseudo so it isdifficult to distinguish which is original and fake. Next, the airing of a list of victims ofunknown origin will actually give birth, as Pierre Bourdie calls it symbolic violence. That is,the practice of violent symbols aimed no longer at the physical target but rather consciousthoughts. Symbolic violence in the appearance of the victim list really has the potential tocreate traumatic feelings towards the families of the victims.

This chapter examines the historical and ideological aspects of women's dining. The scholarship reveals that, during early periods, women sat to dine while men reclined; whereas “now,” women too recline to dine, just as men do—their posture must therefore have changed at some point. On the other hand, by linking the alleged shift in women's posture to overall moral decline, these studies reveal that the distinction between the two postures has ideological implications. That is, dining posture is a locus where practice, gender, and ethics intersect. The chapter suggests that the seated posture functioned pragmatically, placing women under male scrutiny and control. Moreover, whatever the vagaries of actual social practice, the seated posture for women remained at all times the “strict protocol,” even in the Imperial period.

Can sport claim to be an educative means, and what becomes of Greek paideia in the world of sport? The author intends to answer these questions through the use of a semantic and historical clarification of the notions of sport and education. Indeed, on the one hand, sport appears like a social practice not much propitious to education; on the other hand, modern education seems to have deviated from the Greek paideia’s trajectory. Therefore, to take into account this deviation and, by doing so, to make precise the idea of education, and then demonstrate that sport carries all characteristics of modern rationality which has produced it, will allow the author to conclude that sport could be considered one of the preferential means of human beings’ formation. Nevertheless its educative function more likely belongs to the nature of "poïèsis" than to the nature of "praxis."

Lexicography and corpus studies of grammar have a long history of fruitful interaction. For the most part, however, this has been a one-way relationship. Lexicographers have extensively used corpora to identify previously undetected word senses or find natural usage examples; using lexicographic materials when conducting data-driven investigations of grammar, on the other hand, is hardly commonplace. In this paper, I present a Beserman Udmurt corpus made out of "artificial" dictionary examples. I argue that, although such a corpus can not be used for certain kinds of corpus-based research, it is nevertheless a very useful tool for writing a reference grammar of a language. This is particularly important in the case of underresourced endangered varieties, which Beserman is, because of the scarcity of available corpus data. The paper describes the process of developing the Beserman usage example corpus, explores its differences compared to traditional text corpora, and discusses how those can be beneficial for grammar research.

Daartegenover stelt Lode Wils dat de dominerende plaats van de katholieke godsdienst en van de aristocratie in de maatschappijvisie van Van Severen, hem van 1916 af tekent als een man van rechts.________The young Joris Van SeverenThe Flemish-nationalist Joris Van Severen who was to found a fighting force of fascist persuasion in 1931, sympathised as a soldier in 1916 and the following years with the two Russian revolutions and the Bolshevists.  He professed antimilitarism, anti-patriotism and internationalism, as well as the use of violence for the liberation of Flanders. Lode Wils, on the other hand, claims that the dominating position of the Catholic religion and the aristocracy in Van Severen’s view of society marked him out from 1916 onwards as a man from the right wing.

AbstractPrevious work on psych predicates has so far mostly focused on verbs and their non-canonical argument structures within and across languages. In this study, we propose a usage-based account using parallel subtitles in seven European languages in order to examine the intralinguistic and crosslinguistic variation of psychological expressions. We start out from 12 semantically defined psychological concepts rather than concrete constructions; this allows us to include verbal and non-verbal expressions and thus to assess the variation and distribution of construction types of psychological expressions found in language use. We show that while there is a high degree of variation in terms of constructions used within languages, psychological expressions are relatively stable across languages. On the other hand, we find systematic, crosslinguistic concept-specific preferences for psychological expressions.

Refugees welcome ? A contrastive discourse network analysis based on the German and Slovak refugee debateIn this paper refugee discourse with a special focus on transnational aspects is being discussed. It is based on German and Slovakian press articles that are made available in the form of text corpora. The research interest lies in the questions of, a how the positions of the respective community against refugees through language can be expressed, b what actors dominate the discourse and c what type of discourse coalitions arise between them. Factual analyzations are carried out at the macro and micro level. On one hand there are some central argumentation patterns demonstrated, on the other hand relevant discourse actors and their network relationships are presented.

This article aims to show the rise of violence in society. One of its causes is the power of religious discourse. The issue departs from the moslems who do their religious teaching always refer to the texts of religious discourse. While the texts that they refer, from one to others, are different. It is no problem if the texts that they refer are used as a basis to improve the quality of their religiousity in the private life. On the other hand, if it is also to judge or classify others who disagree in the public, it is very dangerous. Because it is aware or not, it will discriminate and dominate others by using the basis of religious discourse. Discrimination and domination by using religious discourse are called symbolic violence. And actually, this symbolic violence bocomes the root of emergence of physical violence

Abstract A widely shared but understudied characteristic of the rise of right-wing conservative populism (the New Right) is the emphasis on religious-cultural identity of the West. Using phrases like ‘Judeo-Christianity’, ‘Christian values’, or ‘Christian Leitkultur’ a variety of political actors have claimed that religious-cultural identity needs to be safeguarded and enshrined in policy. As this frame is gaining traction, the question arises what this emphasis on the public importance of religion entails for those who tend to see themselves as the guardians of religious-cultural identity. In particular this article focusses on the challenges this development creates for Christian Democratic political actors. On the one hand the emphasis on the importance of ‘christian traditions’ resonates with the historical position of christian democrats, on the other hand, there are important differences between traditional christian democracy and how the New Right speaks of religion. The main aim of this article is to outline how the rise of the New Right has created a contestation about what it means to represent christian cultural identity.
