The Mechanical Properties of Rock through an Ancient Transition Zone in the Appalachian Basin

In the present research, the effects of various alloying elements and microstructural constituents on the mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour have been studied for four different rebars. The microstructures of stainless steel and plain rebar primarily reveal equiaxed ferrite grains and ferrite-pearlite microstructures, respectively, with no evidence of transition zone, whereas tempered martensite at the outer rim, followed by a narrow bainitic transition zone with an internal core of ferrite-pearlite, has been observed for the thermomechanically treated (TMT) rebars. The hardness profiles obtained from this study display maximum hardness at the periphery, which decreases gradually towards the centre, thereby providing the classical U-shaped hardness profile for TMT rebars. The tensile test results confirm that stainless steel rebar exhibits the highest combination of strength (≈755 MPa) and ductility (≈27%). It has been witnessed that in Tafel plots, the corrosion rate increases for all the experimental rebars in 1% HCl solution, which is well expected because the acid solutions generally possess a higher corrosive environment than seawater (3.5% NaCl) due to their acidic nature and lower pH values. However, all the experimental results obtained from Tafel and Nyquist plots correlate well for both 1% HCl and 3.5% NaCl solutions.

Today’s manufacturing of structural car body parts faces several challenges, like forming accuracy and passenger safety. Besides these two requirements, lightweight design plays an important role. One possibility to fulfill these partially rivalling demands is the application of hot stamped parts. The combination of hot forming and in die quenching reduces not only springback, but also results in tensile strengths of up to 1500 MPa. This makes a simultaneous reduction of sheet thickness and therefore weight reduction possible. Further development enabled a tailored adjustment of mechanical properties, for example by applying different cooling conditions along the parts. One of the biggest issues of these state of the art processes is the formation of a transition zone due to heat transfer. A promising approach to adjust the mechanical properties with a minimized transition zone is the carburization of sheet metal. Therefore, the parts are coated with graphite, heat treated and subsequently quenched. In this work, the time variant process of carbon diffusion is investigated. Sheets with two different thicknesses are carburized and quenched. The resulting mechanical properties are analyzed using uniaxial tensile tests and microhardness measurements. The results are correlated with the carbon content measured by EDX-analysis.

This paper investigated the high temperature mechanical properties of the hybrid fiber reinforced high performance concrete (HFHPC) and normal concrete (NC) .After being subjected to different elevated heating temperatures, two kinds of concretes have been tested for the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength of test specimen at room temperature and 200 °C,400 °C,600 °C,800 °C.Microstructure changes of concrete were also observed by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) after high temperature. The results show that the hybrid fiber can significantly increase mechanical properties of the concrete at room temperature and high temperature. SEM and XRD analysis shows that there is a permeable diffusion layer in the steel fiber surface because of solid state reaction in the Interfacial Transition Zone of steel fiber and concrete. This permeable diffusion layer is white, bright, serrated and mainly consist of FeSi2 and the complex hydrated calcium silicate. The compounds of this layer change the Interfacial Transition Zone structure, enhance bonding capacity of the steel fiber and matrix, and increase the high temperature mechanical properties of concrete.

The performance of propylene glycol (PG) on the grindability, setting and hardening of Portland (OPC) and Portland-Limestone cements (PLC) was studied. Propylene glycol was added to OPC clinker with percentage ratios; 0, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 wt.% of the OPC clinker. PLC was made by replacing 5 and 10 wt. % of OPC with limestone. PG offers better grinding aid performance with higher Blaine areas. Besides, presence of PG shows higher water of consistency and lower initial and final setting times. The mechanical properties of mortar specimens made from OPC and PLC admixed with PG were improved especially in the first 7 days. This explained due to increase in the cement fineness which leads to an increase in the degree of cement hydration, as well as to improvement in the interfacial transition zone between the cement paste and sand particles, thus resulting in an enhancement in the strength. DTA and SEM results confirmed the improved properties achieved due to admixing OPC or PLC with PG.
