In the Basin and Range extensional province of the western United States, coseismic offsets, under the influence of gravity, display predominantly subsidence of the basin side (fault hanging wall), with comparatively little or no uplift of the mountainside (fault footwall). A few decades later, geodetic measurements [GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)] show broad (∼100 km) aseismic uplift symmetrically spanning the fault zone. Finally, after millions of years and hundreds of fault offsets, the mountain blocks display large uplift and tilting over a breadth of only about 10 km. These sparse but robust observations pose a problem in that the coesismic uplifts of the footwall are small and inadequate to raise the mountain blocks. To address this paradox we develop finite-element models subjected to extensional and gravitational forces to study time-varying deformation associated with normal faulting. Stretching the model under gravity demonstrates that asymmetric slip via collapse of the hanging wall is a natural consequence of coseismic deformation. Focused flow in the upper mantle imposed by deformation of the lower crust localizes uplift, which is predicted to take place within one to two decades after each large earthquake. Thus, the best-preserved topographic signature of earthquakes is expected to occur early in the postseismic period.

Inefficient reserves in fault block belongs to low permeability thin interbed, thus water flooding development process has exposed many contradictions which are serious heterogeneity, large difference of suction of interlayer. Entering the water injection development, the injected water which rapidly advance along the high permeability channel causes water channeling and water flooding, which intenses development contradictions between layers. The reservoir numerical simulation technology on computer can reappear the movement of water and gas in the underground reservoir development process and describes the underground remaining oil distribution of inefficient reserves in complex fault block, which summarizes the remaining oil distribution rule of the water flooding development for complex fault block of inefficient reserves and provides basis for the establishment of oil field development adjustment scheme.

Abstract The paper describes a system of approaches to the design and engineering support of multistage hydraulic fracturing: A method of developing multiple-option modular design of multistage hydraulic fracturing which is a tool for operational decision-making in the process of hydraulic fracturing.Building a Hydraulic Fracturing Designs Matrix when optimizing field development plans. The result was used to build decision maps for finding well completion methods and selecting a baseline hydraulic fracturing design. The paper also describes how the systematization of approaches, methodological developments, and decision templates can help in optimizing field development by drilling directional and horizontal wells followed by multi-stage hydraulic fracturing. The sequence of events and tasks that led to the development of the methodology, as well as its potential, is briefly described. The methodologies were developed during the execution of a hydraulic fracturing project at JK 29 reservoirs of the Tyumen Suite of Em-Yogovskoye field, after which they were applied in a number of other projects for the development of hard-to-recover hydrocarbon reserves in West Siberia.

Summary Reservoir simulation is a valuable tool for performance prediction, production optimization, and field-development decision making. In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing automated workflows for optimization of production and field development by combining reservoir simulation with numerical optimization schemes. Although optimization under geologic uncertainty has received considerable attention, the uncertainty associated with future development activities has not yet been considered in field-development optimization. In practice, reservoirs undergo extensive development activities throughout their life cycle. Disregarding the possibility of future developments can lead to field-performance predictions and optimization results that might be far from optimal. This paper presents a stochastic optimization formulation to account for the uncertainty in future development activities while optimizing current decision variables (e.g., well controls and locations). A motivating example is presented first to demonstrate the significance of including the uncertainty in future drilling plans in oilfield-development optimization. Because future decisions might not be implemented as planned, a stochastic optimization framework is developed to incorporate future drilling activities as uncertain (random) variables. A multistage stochastic programming framework is introduced, in which the decision maker selects an optimal strategy for the current stage decisions while accounting for the uncertainty in future development activities. For optimization, a sequential approach is adopted whereby well locations and controls are repeatedly optimized until improvements in the objective function fall below a threshold. Case studies are presented to demonstrate the advantages of treating future field-development activities as uncertain events in the optimization of current decision variables. In developing real fields, where various unpredictable external factors can cast uncertainty regarding future drilling activities, the proposed approach provides solutions that are more robust and can hedge against changes/uncertainty in future development plans better than conventional workflows.

Abstract The 18 March 2020 Mw 5.7 Magna, Utah, earthquake was the largest earthquake in Utah since the 1992 ML 5.8 St. George earthquake. The geologic setting of the Magna earthquake is well documented by recent geologic mapping at 1:24,000 scale and 1:62,500 scale at and near the epicenter northeast of Magna, Utah. Subsurface fault modeling from surficial geologic mapping, structural cross sections, deep borehole data, and geophysical data reveals a complex system of faulting concentrated in the hanging wall of the Weber and Salt Lake City segments of the Wasatch fault zone including the Harkers fault, the West Valley fault zone, and the newly interpreted Saltair graben. Based on geologic and geophysical data (seismic and gravity), we interpret the mainshock of the Magna earthquake as having occurred on a relatively gently dipping part of the Salt Lake City segment, with aftershocks concentrated in the Saltair graben and West Valley fault zone. Postearthquake rapid reconnaissance of geological effects of the Magna earthquake documented liquefaction near the earthquake epicenter, along the Jordan River, and along the Great Salt Lake shoreline. Subaerial and subaqueous sand boils were identified in regions with roadway infrastructure and artificial fill, whereas collapse features were noted along the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Potential syneresis cracking and pooling in large areas indicated fluctuating groundwater likely related to earthquake ground shaking. The moderate magnitude of the Magna earthquake and minimal geological effects highlight the critical importance of earthquake research from multidisciplinary fields in the geosciences and preparedness on the Wasatch Front.
