An Evaluation of Behavioral Intent in Appalachian Youth Participating in a CROPS Curriculum

Abstract. In an effort to change unsafe tractor operating behaviors among Appalachian youth resulting from practices and habits learned through a socialization process (termed an “apprenticeship of observation”), this study implemented a four-part intervention in high school agricultural education classes that included implementation of a cost-effective rollover protective structure (CROPS) curriculum. The curriculum included farm safety information, specific NIOSH plans for CROPS construction, and procedures for CROPS installation on unprotected tractors. In this exploratory study, pre- and post-assessments were conducted using theory of planned behavior (TPB) constructs to measure changes in four factors that influence changes in learner behavior: learner attitude, perceived social norms, behavioral control, and perceived behavioral intention. Students’ perceived knowledge and skills gained through the intervention were also measured because they are integral components in assessing the effectiveness of a curriculum intervention. Participants (N = 83) were high school students from seven schools in three states in the Appalachian region. Findings revealed statistically significant differences in student attitudes toward the use of life-saving CROPS and in perceived knowledge and skills gained through the curriculum implementation. The CROPS curriculum can be an effective intervention effort for addressing the social and behavioral effects of farm youths’ apprenticeships of observation by creating more positive attitudes and learning outcomes among youth at risk for tractor rollover fatalities. Recommendations are provided for expanding the applications of the curriculum intervention and the TPB constructs. The article presents the structure, content and results of approbation of the C++ programming course developed for the 10th grade students of physics and mathematics profile and implemented as part of the academic subject “Informatics”. The aim of the course is to develop in the student not only knowledge and skills in programming, but also his algorithmic culture and programming culture as important qualities of a potential IT-specialist. This is facilitated by special control of educational process by the teacher, which consists in monitoring the activities of students in writing programs and timely correction of this activity. The assessment of the level of development of student algorithmic culture and programming culture relative to the basic level of their formation (when mastering the basics of algorithmization and programming in the 9th grade) was carried out on the basis of a number of criteria presented in the article. The results of approbation showed that the specially organized teacher activity makes it possible to increase the level of algorithmic culture and programming culture of high school students when studying the basics of programming in C++.

The present article describes the content of the English language teaching in the process of ethnocultural competence development. Thematic and procedural aspects are distinguished. Each one has a complex nature and contributes to profound considering ethnic related information by Kalmyk students at high school.

The purpose of this research is to know the attitude of students in Batanghari High School toward physics learning. The type of research used in quantitative research is survey research design. The study involved 926 students of Senior High School in Batanghari District. Data collected through interview and questionnaire as many as 54 statement and used Likert scale 5 points and interview as a contributor to the questionnaire. Data analysis used is descriptive statistical analysis. The results of the analysis obtained on the indicator of the normality of scientists are 50.6% of students categorized well. The attitude indicator in physics as much as 46% are categorized well. The indicator of enjoyment in learning physics of 55.5% is categorized as good enough attitude. then the indicator of career interest in the field of physics by 45% is categorized quite well. Based on these results in part at Batanghari Senior High School students have a poor attitude towards the learning of physics.

The teacher is one part that has an important role in building the character and mentality of students. High school students are part of the human growth phase in adolescence. Teenagers are part of the leadership baton. At a young age this is also targeted for criminals, including drug traffickers, because adolescence is identical to the age of self-discovery. The methodology carried out in this study with the research design combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches with dominant-less dominant design model. The methodology carried out in this study is divided into 2 parts, the first through the survey methodology and the second through in-depth discussion to obtain results related to the study Drug prevention communication planning for high school students. The results of this study indicate that high school students in Medan City have received information regarding abuse of drug use. Drug abuse can cause physical or psychological dependence. Knowledge that is owned by high school students in Medan City should be followed up by carrying out positive activities. School is a part of the community that determines student attitudes. Activities in school activities must always be in sync with existing development conditions. Schools are not just a learning medium, but schools must play an active role in raising awareness for their students.

This mixed method study was conducted to gain a better understanding of technical educational center (TEC) cohort programs at a midwestern urban community college. In a cohort model, the students start a program and progress through the curriculum together until completion (Bista and Cox, 2014). Specifically, the study focused on two student types, high school students who were taking college courses and postsecondary students as well as the TEC cohort faculty. The TEC cohort model was examined to learn more about the graduation rates, continued program enrollment, and student support systems. Due to a gap in the literature about cohort models in relationship to race, ethnicity, and gender, those aspects were also studied. The results of the study found that postsecondary students graduated at a higher rate than high school students. Relationships developed throughout the cohort among classmates and with the faculty were indicated as a contributing factor to program completion. Other themes included cohort model structure, hands-on learning, career opportunities, and student attitudes. The study concluded with a set of four recommendations.

Abstract The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is an annual worldwide competition for high school students in which their chemical knowledge and skills are tested through a series of theoretical and practical problems. The first IChO was held in Prague in 1968 with three teams of six students representing Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland. Humble beginnings perhaps, but interest in the IChO rose quickly and, by 1980, a total of 52 competitors from 13 countries attended the 12th IChO, held for the first time outside Eastern Europe, in Linz, Austria. Participation expanded steadily in the ensuing years and 186 students from 47 countries were present at the 30th IChO in Melbourne, Australia, in 1998.

Previous studies on global food security have indicated that in order to sustain the global population by the year 2050, a significant increase in food production will be needed. Consequently, it is crucial that today’s students are educated to realize this increasing food demand. One of the problems is that currently too few students seem to be interested in pursuing studies in the fields of agriculture and related sciences. By exploring three research questions, this study assesses the extent to which high school students in each of the 67 counties in the U.S. state of Alabama are being exposed to agricultural-related science courses. For the purposes of this assessment, the high schools were grouped by zones—Northern, Central, Southern and the Black Belt. Relevant high school data, including courses offered, were compiled from Alabama’s Department of Education 2017 directory. Microsoft Excel and SPSS software were used to analyze the data. The findings of this study demonstrated that there are spatial differences in agriculture-related courses offered in high schools in Alabama’s Northern, Central and Southern regions. Future research should further investigate what percentage of high school students actually choose agriculture or related disciplines as their professional career paths after graduating from high school.

Purpose. To describe a 4-year intervention targeting fruit/vegetable consumption by high school students. Design. This is a cohort study involving six pairs of schools (n = 12) matched on gender, race, enrollment, and location with schools randomly assigned within pairs to intervention or control conditions. Setting. Twelve Archdiocese of New Orleans high schools. Subjects. Cohort was defined as students (n = 2339) who were ninth-graders in the 1993–94 school year who provided baseline data. Intervention. Four components of the intervention are: (1) school-wide media-marketing campaign, (2) school-wide meal and snack modification, (3) classroom workshops and supplementary subject matter activities, and (4) parental involvement. Measures. Focus groups were conducted for target population input and program development. Process evaluation included student feedback on media-marketing intervention materials and activities reported here. Process measures also included school meal participation, student characteristics, and verification of intervention activities. Results. Focus groups indentified barriers to increased consumption of fruit and vegetables as lack of availability, variety, and inconsistency in taste. Student attitudes were favorable regarding a school program to improve diet and parental involvement. Low consumption of fruits/vegetables was reported. After a 2-month school-wide program introduction utilizing various media-marketing materials and activities, 93% of students were aware of the program and 96% could identify the healthy eating message. Conclusions. Program development can be guided and enriched by student input via focus groups. Media-marketing activities effectively delivered health messages and attracted students' attention. Materials and activities used were acceptable channels for increasing awareness, positive attitudes, and knowledge about fruits/vegetables.
