In this research, the capacity of biodegradation of phenolic compounds using the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was evaluated, as well as the impact of the contaminant on the growth of the microalgae. The bioassays consisted on three phenol concentrations: 25 mgL/L, 50 mgL/L and 100 mg/L and a control solution. Bioremediation rates of approximately 99% were obtained, showing no significant difference between medium and high concentration bioassays. A good microalgae growth rate was obtained for the tests at low and medium concentration, they were above the control bioassay, but the high concentration bioassay showed an inhibition in the cell growth, this one presented growth below the control bioassay. The use of the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in bioremediation processes of phenolic effluents, whose concentrations are below 100 mg/L, is proposed for future research.

Medicinal plants are insufficiently studied and almost endless. The use of phytomedication enables reduce the impact of xenobiotics on animals organism through the natural origin of active compounds and associated and auxiliary substances smoothing the basic action and prevent the manifestation of side effects. One of such plants the possibility of using in veterinary practice is still insufficiently studied is mock–orange. Considering on the important role of phenolic compounds in the metabolic regulation of plant and diversity of impact of these substances on organism of animals and humans, in leaves of mock–oranges different cultivar was identified the content of phenolic secondary metabolites to identify the prospects for their further using in veterinary medicine. The qualitative reaction with the Wilson reagent, solution of iron (III) chloride and by cyanidin reaction in extracts from mock–orange leaves was established the presence of phenolic compounds. Further phytochemical investigations established that the content of phenols in the investigated extracts is between 33.0 ± 0.48 to 107.1 ± 0.91 mg/g (in Philadelphus L. 'Avalanche'). The content of flavonoids in alcohol extracts from leaves of different species of mock–oranges varies from 5.3 ± 0.41 to 10.6 ± 0.41 mg/g. Greatest quantity of flavonoids at relatively of low content of phenols contained in the preparation from leaves of Philadelphus coronaries 'Nana '(mock–orange dwarf), the use of which, along with Philadelphus L. 'Avalanche' can be perspective in medical and veterinary practice, considering on the high concentration of phenols and flavonoids and coumarins in these mock–oranges breed.

Although (1) literacy teacher education research and professional practice standards highlight the significance of empathy as a central tenant of teachers' professional dispositions, and (2) developing deeper and more empathetic understanding of others is a frequently cited rationale for utilizing service-learning as a critical pedagogy for in-service and pre-service teacher preparation, little quantitative research exists measuring in-service teachers' empathy or empathy development. The purpose of this chapter is to explore how a course-embedded, self-selected, and community-based service-learning experience effected participating literacy teachers' self-reported empathy. While participants scores increased in the pre-post condition, results of a paired sample t-test indicated no significant difference in teachers' self-reported empathy across the pre-post condition. Implications for practice and program administration as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to examine the relationship between developmental stages and concussions that resulted in amnesia as measured by ImPACT. Method Participants were selected from an archival de-identified sports medicine ImPACT database. The sample (N = 4,200) was primarily male (62.2%) student athletes with ages ranging from 10 to 25 years. Participants were divided into three groups: Young athletes (n = 1,400), Adolescent (n = 1,400), and Adult (n = 1,400). A One-Way ANOVA was conducted to determine the relationship between age group and prevalence of concussions resulting in anterograde or retrograde amnesia. Results The One-Way ANOVA revealed significant differences between age group and anterograde F(2,4197) = 107.449, p < .001 and retrograde amnesia F(2,4197) = 82.949, p < .001. Bonferroni pairwise comparison revealed the adolescent athlete group experienced more concussions that result in both anterograde and retrograde amnesia compared to young and adult athletes. There was no significant difference between young and adult athletes. Additionally, there is a significant difference regarding total games missed following concussion F(2,4197) = 117.723, p < .001, with adolescent athletes missing more games compared to young and adult athletes. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest adolescent athletes tend to experience more amnesia-related concussions compared to young and adult athletes. Additionally, adolescent athletes miss more games following these types of concussions. This study highlights the impact that certain types of concussions have on athletes across the developmental stages. Future research should analyze the cognitive effects of various types of concussions across the developmental stages.

<p>The present research examines the effect of music therapy on the affect of hospitalised children. It took place on a paediatric ward of a New Zealand public hospital. This study aimed to investigate the role of music therapy in addressing patients' psychosocial needs. Literature on the impact of hospitalisation, and on the use of music therapy in hospitals and paediatrics was reviewed. The research involved an audit of the therapist's clinical notes from music therapy sessions over the course of seven months. The clinical notes included measurements of children's mood from the beginning and end of sessions, using McGrath's (1990) Affective Facial Scale. It was hypothesised that mood measures following music therapy would be higher than pre-music therapy scores. Statistical analysis of the facial scale data did not show a significant difference between 'before' and 'after' measures. These results were discussed with regard to a ceiling effect (this is, the measurements indicated patients were at the happy end of the scale before the music therapy session, so there was little room on the scale for mood to improve following music therapy). The measurement of emotion did not prove to be straightforward. The hospital environment may have influenced the patients' responses in a number of ways. These environmental influences are discussed with reference to examples from the clinical notes. The usefulness of facial scales in this context is discussed, as well as other limitations of the research. Suggestions for future research include the use of other mood measures, and the inclusion of measurements of parental mood and how this affects the child.</p>

Aim/Purpose: This research aims to examine the role of Knowledge Management (KM) infrastructure (technological, structural, and cultural) in enhancing job satisfaction in the context of developing countries, as exemplified by Jordan. Background: Despite the presence of job satisfaction studies conducted in educational institutions across the world, knowledge management issues have not been taken into consideration as influencing factors. Methodology: A total of 168 responses to a questionnaire survey were collected from the academic staff at Zarqa University in Jordan. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the research hypotheses. Contribution: This study offers deeper understanding about the role that knowledge management infrastructure plays in enhancing job satisfaction from a developing country perspective. The proposed model is tested the first time in Jordan. Findings: Results of the current study revealed that there are significant positive impacts of technological and cultural KM infrastructures on job satisfaction, whereas structural KM infrastructure does not have a significant impact on job satisfaction. Also, the results revealed significant gender difference in perception of the impact of knowledge management infrastructure on job satisfaction. On the other hand, an ANOVA test found no significant difference in the impact of knowledge management infrastructure on job satisfaction among groups by age, experience, and academic rank. Recommendation for Researchers: Our findings can be used as a base of knowledge for further studies about knowledge management infrastructure and job satisfaction following different criteria and research procedures. Future Research: The current model can be applied and assessed further in other sectors, including public universities and other services sectors in developed and developing countries.

Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the flipped classroom model on learner achievement and satisfaction for undergraduate learners Background: The context for this research on the flipped classroom was an introductory technology literacy course at a public, research university. Methodology: This study employed a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design consisting of two groups: the treatment condition (sections in which instructors implemented the flipped classroom model for the module that was the focus of the study) and control condition (sections in which instructors lectured in the face-to-face meeting, then learners completed the practice online as homework). Learners in each group received their form of instruction and completed the same instructional activities, tests, and surveys. These data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Analysis of Covariance (ANACOVA) models. Contribution: This research adds to a growing base of literature on the flipped classroom, a special instantiation of blended learning. Findings: Results indicated that there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of learner achievement. In terms of learner satisfaction, however, there was a significant difference in which participants favored the control condition. Recommendations for Practitioners: Practitioners should select situations that are appropriate for the flipped classroom context. This should be reflected in the implementation of curriculum that would benefit from the affordances of this approach. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should seek to replicate this study in longer durations and using rigorously developed and validated measures. Impact on Society: This study suggests the flipped classroom may not be perceived by learners in an introductory technology literacy course as beneficial to their satisfaction. Future Research: Future research should seek to replicate studies in technology literacy courses to identify the optimal learning situations for the blended learning environment.

&lt;p&gt;Throughout the northeastern United States and Europe, relic charcoal hearths (RCHs) are more regularly being discovered in proximity to furnaces used for iron or quick-lime production; charcoal was used as a primary fuel source in the furnaces.&amp;#160; RCHs have been found across parts of Europe and Connecticut, USA in different hillslope positions, on vary degrees of slope and aspect, all of which can be a factor affecting the shape of the RCH.&amp;#160; Their usage for charcoal production varied with the time period, furnaces were in operation with some hearths being used once and older ones (such as in Europe) being used multiple times. RCHs across the northcentral Appalachians, USA have been minimally investigated, thus determining where they occur on the landscape, their shape, and their morphologic positions will be useful in discerning their effect on surface hydrology and soil development. Our study focuses on developing a repeatable process for: finding RCHs and quantifying how RCHs may alter surface hydrology. &amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We used a combination of processed LiDAR data to create hillshades, and slope gradients to visualize RCHs.&amp;#160; A total of 6,758 hearths have been digitized across three study areas that reflect different historical time periods of construction and environments. We hypothesize that the construction of RCHs can alter the surface hydrology of their surrounding environments. To fully quantify the landscape-level effects of RCHs, a subset of the total was created to fully digitize the RCHs&amp;#8217; area.&amp;#160; The RCH was broken into their rim and platform components.&amp;#160; A topographic wetness index (TWI), and SAGA wetness index (SWI) was created for two study areas in order to quantify surface hydrology effects.&amp;#160; We found that RCH platforms have a significantly higher TWI and SWI than the rim counterparts indicating that the platform is wetter than the RCH outer rims.&amp;#160; Geomorphic position was found to not effect wetness. &amp;#160;Using field measured volumetric water content, we found that as distance from the center of the hearth increases, the drier the soil becomes. Using a combination of GIS flow path analysis, and RCH geometry, standardized ellipses using the axis of local RCHs and the mean area of the total RCHs were created to understand the upslope (control) and downslope (experiment) effects of hearths on the surface hydrology.&amp;#160; Preliminary analysis indicates that downslope positions from RCHs are drier than upslope positions and that there is a significant difference in the relationship between slope position and distance from an RCH and the corresponding TWI and SWI values. Future research will address the effect of slope position and distance to quantify the effect of RHCs on surface hydrology. Furthermore, the soil chemical changes from RCH creation and the increase moisture may increase the habitat for rare species of both plants and animals that otherwise would not be present.&amp;#160; Understanding the extent of the impact human activity can have on various ecosystems can help forest managers, conservationists, pedologists, and climatologists better adapt their management or research pursuits within a specific environment to prepare for future changes, natural or anthropogenic.&lt;/p&gt;

Abstract Background Electronic prescriptions are often created and delivered electronically to the pharmacy while paper-based/handwritten prescriptions may be delivered to the pharmacy by the patients. These differences in the mode of creation and transmission of the two types of prescription could influence the rate at which outpatients fill new prescriptions of previously untried medications. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate literatures to determine the impact of electronic prescribing compared with paper-based/handwritten prescribing on primary medication adherence in an outpatient setting. Methods The keywords and phrases “outpatients,” “e-prescriptions,” “paper-based prescriptions,” and “primary medication adherence” were combined with their relevant synonyms and medical subject headings. A comprehensive literature search was conducted on EMBASE, CINAHL, and MEDLINE databases, and Google Scholar. The results of the search were screened and selected using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) was used for quality appraisal of included studies. Data relevant to the objective of the review were extracted and analyzed through narrative synthesis. Results A total of 10 original studies were included in the final review, including 1 prospective randomized study and 9 observational studies. Nine of the 10 studies were performed in the United States. Four of the studies indicated that electronic prescribing significantly increases initial medication adherence, while four of the studies suggested the opposite. The remaining two studies found no significant difference in primary medication adherence between the two methods of prescribing. The variations in the studies did not allow the homogeneity required for meta-analysis to be achieved. Conclusion The conflicting findings relating to the efficacy of primary medication adherence across both systems demonstrate the need for a standardized measure of medication adherence. This would help further determine the respective benefits of both approaches. Future research should also be conducted in different countries to give a more accurate representation of adherence.

AbstractThe ability to effectively cope with stress has been demonstrated to be an important factor in warding off potential physical disease and psychological distress. Responses to stressful events have been shown to greatly vary across individuals. Research has shown that intervening variables, such as cognitive appraisals of stressful events, can markedly affect the amount of stress (e.g., mood disturbance, anxiety, changes in neurotransmitter concentrations, suppression of immune system functioning) individuals experience. One such intervening variable, productive humor, was hypothesized to have a positive stress-moderating effect.Four different experimental conditions were used to assess the impact of a stressful situation on mood and anxiety state. Two conditions had subjects produce a humorous narrative in response to the stressful situation. One of these conditions included an instructional video on the use of productive humor. A third condition had subjects produce an intellectual narrative, while a fourth condition had subjects produce no narrative. The humorous narrative conditions were hypothesized to lead to the greatest moderation in stress (i.e., mood and anxiety).In the humorous narrative (without training) condition, subjects who were more successful at producing the narratives showed significantly more moderated changes in mood and anxiety levels pre-task to post-task. These changes were not significantly different from the intellectual or no narrative conditions. The significant difference found between high versus low humorous narrative producers may be accounted for in terms of success versus non-success at completing the experimental task.Finally, among subjects with initially high pre-task mood or anxiety levels and high tendencies to use productive humor, successful performance of some type of a verbal, cognitive task (i.e., humorous or intellectual narrative) was found to be more beneficial in moderating the effects of stress versus silence. These latter findings were based on patterns of results from post hoc analyses with small sample sizes, thus suggesting the need for future research along similar lines.
