Magnesium AZ91D alloy is reinforced with red mud particles, is the by-product of alumina which is extracted from refining of bauxite throughbayer process to fabricate low cost novel composite by powder metallurgy technique. Reinforcement ratio was varied from 0% to 15% whereas size of the particles were kept as 30µm.The microstructure and mechanical properties such as density and microhardness of the composite were evaluated. Microstructural characterization of the sintered composite revealed a near uniform distribution of the red mud particulates with magnesium alloy metal matrix. The test results indicated that the increase in weight % of red mud particles significantly enhances the mechanical propertiesof the composite.

Abstract Cast magnesium matrix composites reinforced with silicon carbide particles were investigated by using Raman microscopy. 3C, 4H and 6H polytypes of SiC particles were identified in the investigated composites. Additionally, Mg2Si compound was detected by Raman microscopy in the composites microstructure.

TiB2 particulate reinforced magnesium matrix composites were successfully fabricated by adding a TiB2–Al master alloy processed via the flux-assisted synthesis (FAS) reaction into molten magnesium. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and microstructural characterization of the TiB2–Al master alloy revealed the formation and uniform distribution of TiB2 reinforcements. By stirring, magnesium matrix composites with dispersed homogenously TiB2 particles can be obtained. Microstructural characterization of the TiB2/Mg composites revealed retention of hexagonal or rectangular TiB2 particulates with the size of about 1 μm.

In situ Mg-AlN composite has been synthesized by nitrogen gas bubbling method. The morphology of the particles is found to be hexagonal by SEM. The size of the AlN particles is found to be in the range from nano, submicron to a few microns. XRD analysis of the samples confirms the formation of AlN in the melt. Further, the grain size of the magnesium matrix has been reduced by the presence of AlN particles. Hardness of the composite is significantly increased in the particle rich area due to the presence of hard AlN particles.

A magnesium alloy containing Al2Y particles was successfully fabricated by changing the content of Al in the Mg-6Y alloy melt. Its microstructure and mechanical properties were subsequently characterized. The results show that two types of Al2Y particles were discovered in the Mg-6Y-xAl (x = 0.5–5) alloys, which are namely the polygonal particles in the pre-precipitated phase and the discontinuous network of particles in the eutectic phase. With an increase in Al content, the amount of pre-precipitated Al2Y increases and the eutectic decreases gradually. When the Al content is 5 wt %, Al2Y particles are almost all in the pre-precipitated phase in the Mg-6Y alloy. After hot extrusion, the YA65 alloy could be regarded as the Mg master alloy that contains Al2Y particles with heterogeneous nucleation capability or Al2Y particle-reinforced magnesium matrix composites. The tensile strength of the as-extruded magnesium alloy is significantly improved at ambient temperatures.

Two mixtures of elemental nickel and titanium powders in atomic proportions of 50% Ni + 50% Ti and 32% Ni + 68% Ti, respectively, were ground for 40 hours in a high energy planetary mill. In the case of the first mixture, the mechanical alloying was totally produced, while for the second, the alloying was partial. In both mixtures, qualitative X-ray diffraction phase analysis revealed the presence of metastable phases, such as Ni HC and NiTi- R-phase. Also, the equiatomic mixture is characterized by a partially amorphous structure. 10% of each type of mixture submitted to milling was used as reinforcing element in the form of particulates for two magnesium matrix composites. They were obtained by sintering in the plasma at 590C. In the case of the reinforced with the second mixture composite, the production of new phases other than the matrix and those present in the mixture of nickel and titanium powders after milling were recorded. The electron microscopy images of the two composites have resistant, free of micropores or microcracks matrix / particulates interfaces. The Mg-10% (32 at% Ni + 68 at% Ti) composite is characterized by Vickers hardness higher than that of the composite reinforced with the equiatomic mixture.
