Category: Midfoot/Forefoot; Trauma Introduction/Purpose: Lisfranc fractures are rare, but with a high degree of morbidity. Post-traumatic degenerative changes that result in pain and deformity, are common; with arthrodesis being a treatment option. There are several implants for midfoot arthrodesis, but with little literature regarding the best method for achieve bone fusion. We analice the fusion rates, comparing different joint stabilization techniques. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study of 20 patients with post traumatic osteoarthritis of the midfoot was performed, who underwent midfoot arthrodesis, between January 2016 - January 2018. The comparison between arthrodesis techniques with compression plate (CP) vs plates and / or screws (PS) was made. Data analysis was performed with SPSS software. Results: The fusion times were compared between the 2 groups, CP 18.7 (+- 8.01) vs PT 16.86 (+- 11.5) weeks, without significant differences. There were also no significant differences when comparing the discharge times between the 2 groups, CP 8 (+- 1.84) vs PS 9 weeks (+- 2.36) (p = 0.312). However, when comparing the proportion of complications between both groups, the CP group has lesser than the PS group (42.8% vs 83.3%). This difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.95) although there is a tendency for CP to have fewer complications. In addition, the proportion of complications in primary vs. secondary arthrodesis, 25% vs. 75% respectively, was compared, finding statistically significant differences (p = 0.028) Conclusion: At the moment, there is a lack of evidence to recommend the exclusive use of implants. However, when comparing complications between both groups, there would be a tendency that the use of compression plates would have fewer complications. In addition, it could be inferred that in patients with lesions with greater joint destruction, primary arthrodesis is valid as an option.

OBJECTIVEHydrocephalus is recognized as a common disabling pediatric disease afflicting infants and children disproportionately in the developing world, where access to neurosurgical care is limited and risk of perinatal infection is high. This surgical case series describes the Project Medishare Hydrocephalus Specialty Surgery (PMHSS) program experience treating hydrocephalus in Haiti between 2008 and 2015.METHODSThe authors conducted a retrospective review of all cases involving children treated for hydrocephalus within the PMHSS program in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, from 2008 through 2015. All relevant epidemiological information of children treated were prospectively collected including relevant demographics, birth history, hydrocephalus etiology, head circumference, and operative notes. All appropriate associations and statistical tests were performed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.RESULTSAmong the 401 children treated within PMHSS, postinfectious hydrocephalus (PIH) accounted for 39.4% (n = 158) of cases based on clinical, radiographic, and endoscopic findings. The majority of children with hydrocephalus in Haiti were male (54.8%, n = 197), born in the rainy season (59.7%, n = 233), and born in a coastal/inland location (43.3%, n = 61). The most common surgical intervention was endoscopic third ventriculostomy with choroid plexus cauterization (ETV/CPC) (45.7%, n = 175). Multivariate logistic regression analysis yielded coastal birth location (OR 3.76, 95% CI 1.16–12.18) as a statistically significant predictor of PIH. Increasing head circumference (adjusted OR 1.06, 95% CI 0.99–1.13) demonstrated a slight trend toward significance with the incidence of PIH.CONCLUSIONSThis information will provide the foundation for future clinical and public health studies to better understand hydrocephalus in Haiti. The 39.4% prevalence of PIH falls within observed rates in Africa as does the apparently higher prevalence for those born during the rainy season. Although PIH was the most frequent etiology seen in almost all birth locations, the potential relationship with geography noted in this series will be the focus of further research in an effort to understand the link between climate and PIH in Haiti. The ultimate goal will be to develop an appropriate public health strategy to reduce the burden of PIH on the children of Haiti.

Introduction: Dental treatments have a high-risk nature due to the close relationship between the patient and direct exposure to saliva, blood, etc. Concerns about the transmission of COVID-19 infection have led to the formation of some form of patient fear. Therefore, considering the importance of mental health, the present study was designed to investigate the degree of anxiety in people with COVID-19 through dentistry.Material and Methods: In the present descriptive study, 384 questionnaires were randomly distributed among the patients of Sari Dental Clinic in the period of April to June 2021. After the necessary explanations and obtaining informed written consent, the questionnaires were completed by the clients. Finally, the data were analyzed using SPSS V.22 software and statistical tests. Values greater than 0.05 were also considered significant. Results: In this study, 29.2% were male and 68.8% were female, and corona-related anxiety was more common in women and married people. As they got older, they tended to respond to higher options like most of the time or always. The higher the level of education, the less noticeable the unnecessary visits to the dental clinic. Conclusion: People were more worried about transmitting the disease to those around them and this anxiety was more in women than men. Married people were also more anxious than single people. Anxiety was significantly higher in the unemployed than in the employed. There was a significant relationship between degree and level of anxiety and people with higher education levels showed more anxiety.
