The founding of the Bell Telephone System, the public switched telephone network (PSTN), has evolved into a highly successful global telecommunications system. It is designed specifically for voice communications, and provides a high quality of service and ease of use. It is supported by sophisticated operations systems that ensure extremely high dependability and availability. Over the past 100 years, it has been a showcase for communications engineering and led to groundbreaking new technologies (e.g., transistors, fiber optics). Yet it is remarkable that many public carriers see their future in Internet protocol (IP) networks, namely the Internet. Of course, the Internet has also been highly successful, coinciding with the proliferation of personal computers. It has become ubiquitous for data applications such as the World Wide Web, e-mail, and peer-to-peer file sharing. While it is not surprising that the Internet is the future for data services, even voice services are transitioning to voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). This phenomenon bears closer examination, as a prime example explaining the success of the Internet as a universal communications platform. This chapter gives a historical development of the Internet and an overview of technical and nontechnical reasons for the convergence of services.

Supporting teacher candidates’ learning of coherent and well-ordered content knowledge is one of the most important educational aims in subject teacher education. To reach this aim, teacher educators need suitable tools to enhance the formation of such knowledge. In this article, we present an analytical framework to examine conceptual knowledge, meaning the ability to define the relevant concepts pertaining to a task; relational knowledge, i.e., the ability to consider interrelations between the concepts; and strategic knowledge, i.e., the ability to use the knowledge by providing (experimental or modeling) procedures, which build new knowledge. A sample analysis of 16 teacher candidates’ written reports is presented to illustrate how this framework can be used. The aim of the study was to reveal what kind of variation in teacher candidates’ content knowledge can be found. This study suggests that teacher candidates’ written reports can reveal remarkable differences in the epistemic dimensions of content knowledge. The framework shows the differences among the teacher candidates as well as produces information for teacher educators of the critical aspects, when and where to intervene, and where to focus using different teaching practices.

Penelitian ini adalah tentang karakteristik pengajaran mekanik untuk meningkatkan kemampuan representasi mahasiswa calon guru fisika pada verbal, matematika, gambar, dan grafis. Masalah penelitian adalah bagaimana karakteristik bahan ajar mekanik dapat membantu mahasiswa calon guru fisika dalam meningkatkan kemampuan representasi mereka pada verbal, matematika, gambar, dan grafis. Masalah penelitian ini diterjemahkan ke dalam dua pertanyaan. Pertama, bagaimana bahan ajar mekanik terdiri dari contoh aplikasi prinsip mekanika dalam gambar peristiwa fisika? Kedua, bagaimana pola penulisan bahan ajar mekanik bagi mahasiswa calon guru fisika? Penelitian ini merupakan pengembangan bahan ajar mekanika, menggunakan metode campuran model investigasi, yaitu: pengumpulan data kualitatif, membangun pengajaran mekanik, rancangan materi sehingga akan siap untuk divalidasi. Subjek penelitian diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kemampuan representasi pada verbal, matematika, gambar, dan grafis. Responden penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa fisika calon guru yang mengambil subjek fisika dasar fakultas keguruan dan pendidikan, Universitas Jember. Adapun teknik pengumpulan data adalah: observasi, angket, tes dan dokumentasi. Data dijabarkan secara kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar mekanik terdiri dari contoh aplikasi prinsip mekanika dalam gambar acara fisika dan memiliki pola urutan bab, judul sub bab, deskripsi materi, contoh, uji kemampuan dan bibliografi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memperoleh gambaran mengenai berbagai konsepsi dan miskonsepsi yang ada pada siswa, mahasiswa calon guru fisika, dan guru fisika terkait konsep cahaya dalam pembelajaran fisika. Pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini yaitu dengan melakukan analisis terhadap 25 artikel tentang gambaran konsepsi siswa, mahasiswa calon guru, dan guru fisika tentang konsep cahaya dalam pembelajaran fisika. Hasil penelitian ini adalah gambaran konsepsi siswa, mahasiswa calon guru, dan guru fisika tentang konsep cahaya dalam pembelajaran fisika yang dapat menjadi informasi awal untuk mengembangkan penelitian berkelanjutan berupa program pembelajaran atau program perkuliahan untuk meremediasi miskonsepsi yang dimiliki siswa.Kata kunci: Konsepsi, Miskonsepsi, Pembelajaran Fisika, Konsep Cahaya. The purpose of this study is to obtain a description of the various conceptions and misconceptions in students, physics teacher candidates, and physics teachers about concept of light in physics learning. The data collection in this research is by analyzing 25 articles about the concept of student's conception, student of teacher candidate, and physics teacher about light concept in physics learning. The result of this research is a description of student conception, student of teacher candidate, and physics teacher about light concept in physics learning which can be preliminary information to develop continuous research in the form of learning program or lecture program to remediate misconception owned by students.Keywords: Conception, Misconception, Physical Learning, Concept of Light.
