Abstract Human use of land is a major cause of the global environmental changes that define the Anthropocene. Archaeological and paleoecological evidence confirm that human populations and their use of land transformed ecosystems at sites around the world by the late Pleistocene and historical models indicate this transformation may have reached globally significant levels more than 3000 years ago. Yet these data in themselves remain insufficient to conclusively date the emergence of land use as a global force transforming the biosphere, with plausible dates ranging from the late Pleistocene to AD 1800. Conclusive empirical dating of human transformation of the terrestrial biosphere will require unprecedented levels of investment in sustained interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of a geospatial cyberinfrastructure to collate and integrate the field observations of archaeologists, paleoecologists, paleoenvironmental scientists, environmental historians, geoscientists, geographers and other human and environmental scientists globally from the Pleistocene to the present. Existing field observations may yet prove insufficient in terms of their spatial and temporal coverage, but by assessing these observations within a spatially explicit statistically robust global framework, major observational gaps can be identified, stimulating data gathering in underrepresented regions and time periods. Like the Anthropocene itself, building scientific understanding of the human role in shaping the biosphere requires both sustained effort and leveraging the most powerful social systems and technologies ever developed on this planet.

Subtribe Banksiinae of the Proteaceae was diverse in Tasmania in the early and middle Tertiary, but is now restricted to two species, Banksia marginata and B. serrata. Rapid and extreme environmental changes during the Pleistocene are likely causes of the extinction of some Banksia species in Tasmania. Such extinctions may have been common in many taxonomic groups. The leaves and infructescences of Banksia kingii Jordan & Hill, sp. nov. are described from late Pleistocene sediments. This is the most recent macrofossil record of a now extinct species in Tasmania. Banksia kingii is related to the extant B. saxicola. Banksia strahanensis Jordan & Hill, sp. nov. (known only from a leaf and leaf fragments and related to B. spinulosa) is described from Early to Middle Pleistocene sediments in Tasmania. This represents the third Pleistocene macrofossil record of a plant species which is now extinct in Tasmania.

Mapping seafloors is a fundamental step for managing and preserving coastal zones. Moreover, in a context of current global environmental changes, new methods allowing long-term monitoring are increasingly required. Various methods have been used to map seafloors, primarily benthic macrofauna and sediment sampling along regular grids or transects, and remote sensing methods. These methods map very different things, do not have the same accuracy levels, and have different costs in time and money. Furthermore, such methods often require the competencies of highly skilled scientists and exclude non-specialists otherwise best placed to perform them. In this paper, we test a method based on Direct Field Observations (‘DFO method’), which can be used by non-specialists, and assess if it is sufficient for mapping and monitoring intertidal habitats. We further compare this method with other conventional ones. The results show that such a simple method is relatively rapid and inexpensive given the results obtained. Moreover, it is particularly suitable for highly fragmented intertidal landscapes where other methods are often very limited. In consequence, in areas such as the European coasts, it can be used by non-specialists, such as protected-area managers, and because it is an inexpensive and quick method long-term monitoring is also possible.

Wildlife crime has huge consequences regarding global environmental changes to animals, plants and the entire ecosystem. Combatting wildlife crime effectively requires a deep understanding of human–wildlife interactions and an analysis of the influencing factors. Conservation and green criminology are important in reducing wildlife crime, protecting wildlife and the ecosystem and informing policy-makers about best practices and strategies. However, the past years have shown that wildlife crime is not easy to combat and it is argued in this article that there are underlying existential “givens” and culture-specific aspects that need to be investigated to understand why wildlife crime is still on the rise. This theoretical article explores (eco-)existential perspectives, Greening’s four givens and selected African philosophical concepts, aiming to understand the complexities behind the prevalence of wildlife crime within global and African contexts.

ResumoAs Alterações Ambientais Globais têm se colocado como pauta de inúmeras políticas e condicionantes culturais, econômicas e sociais em diferentes países no Mundo, sendo refletidas nas perspectivas educacionais. Dessa forma, procura-se, com este trabalho, apontar um cenário de concepção e de prática sobre as alterações ambientais globais no escopo do ensino de Geografia na educação profissional e tecnológica. Nesse sentido, o objetivo da pesquisa se assentou em desvelar os seguintes aspectos: 1) mecanismos metodológicos para as aulas desenvolvidas; 2) eixos analíticos sobre as Alterações Ambientais Globais; 3) instrumentos utilizados; 4) referenciais teóricos; 6) papel do livro didático; 7) enfoques formativos dos docentes. Para isto, foi aplicado um questionário a docentes de uma instituição da rede federal de educação profissional e tecnológica no Brasil, denominada Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia. O questionário foi empregado para 11 docentes, apresentando interrogações sobre os itens acima enumerados. Obteve-se como resultado que há o predomínio de aulas expositivas e seminários, as análises sobre o tema ocorrem, majoritariamente, pelas mudanças climáticas e desmatamento, as aulas se baseiam em maior parte nos documentários e gráficos, há a prevalência de referenciais teóricos brasileiros, ocorre a constatação ampla de que os livros didáticos são deficitários e mais de 35% dos professores consideram que suas formações não possuem enfoque para o trabalho com as Alterações Ambientais Globais. AbstractGlobal Environmental Changes have been placed on the agenda of numerous policies, cultural, economic and social conditions in different countries in the world, being reflected in educational perspectives. Thus, this work seeks to point out a scenario of conception and practice on global environmental changes in the scope of teaching Geography in professional and technological education. In this sense, the objective of the research was based on unveiling the following aspects: 1) methodological mechanisms for the developed classes; 2) analytical axes on Global Environmental Changes; 3) instruments used; 4) theoretical references; 6) the textbook role; 7) teachers training approaches. For this, a questionnaire was applied to teachers of an institution of the federal network of professional and technological education in Brazil, called Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology. The questionnaire was answered by 11 teachers, asking questions about the items listed above. It was obtained as a result that there is a predominance of expository classes and seminars, the analyzes on the subject are mainly due to climate change and deforestation, the classes are mostly based on documentaries and graphics, there is a prevalence of Brazilian theoretical references, it occurs the widespread finding that textbooks are deficient and more than 35% of teachers consider that their training does not have a focus on working with Global Environmental Changes. Our paper aims at assessing the sustainable development of the universities in the 21st century that is market by globalization, high penetration of information and communication technologies as well as global environmental changes. The paper stresses that the higher education is undergoing profound changes in its role and its position in the society and should focus its attention to the environmental challenges and the fight again the global warming. Higher education is ripe for reforms that are not intended to disrupt its main goals and its very essence but that might help it to modernize its approaches to achieving the up-to-date objectives that would maximize its contribution to the development of the society. Therefore, it appears that governments and the civil society alike should put more effort into embedding the sustainable development principles as well as sustainable development goals (SDG) into the educational curricular of the universities regardless to their geographical location.

The article shows that the specificity of a holistic personality adjustment process in social systems is not confined only because of the peculiarities of its elements, such as the personal maturity, changes in the social conditions of the environment, and is determined by the interaction of structural components of the adaptive capacity of the individual. This maladjustment of one of these components will inevitably impact on the integrity of the individual adaptation process. It was determined that based on the analysis of the structural components of adaptation of the person (socially adapted situation, social need for adaptive, adaptive psychological need) there is the need to clarify the role of each of these components in the process of adaptation of the person. In the context of investigations under the holistic process of social adaptation of personality in social systems we mean active mutual adaptation of the individual and the social environment to each other in order to create a harmonious cooperation for the effective functioning of the individual in these social systems. Violation of this process or the implementation of its social disapproved or antisocial ways leads to the violation of the integrity of the adaptation process and it flows in unacceptable forms of society. It is emphasized that social exclusion leads to disruption of the socialization process, reflected in the increasing complexity of learning and the use of social roles, values and attitudes. In accordance with the social work we should pay attention to the replacement of anti-social norms, values and attitudes to prosocial. This process we treat as a social reinsertion - purposefully organized restructuring of the moral and valuable personality and behavioral areas that promotes the formation of social and value orientations and behavior. It was stated that the whole process of social adaptation of the person can provide awareness and reflection of environmental changes in the social systems of the environment; activity of the person in the regulation of adaptive capacity; transformation of adaptive capacity into more complex and sophisticated forms of interaction with the surrounding reality
