New sulfonated and non-sulfonated monomers — dinitro and diamino compounds — were prepared on the basis of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB) which is the demethylation product of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). The sulfonated dinitrocompounds interacted with different binuclear bis-phenols under the conditions of aromatic nucleophilic nitrodisplacement reactions. Polyethers of moderate molecular weights were prepared on the basis of dinitrocompound containing electron-withdrawing 3,5-dinitrodiphenyl sulfone-4′-sulfonic acid “bridging” groups. Copolymers and blends with other sulfonated polymers were prepared to improve the film-forming properties of the polyethers developed on the basis of 3,5-dinitrodiphenyl sulfone-4′-sulfonic acid. High molecular weight sulfonated polynaphthylimides were prepared by the interaction of sulfonated diamine containing electron-donating ether group — 3,5-diaminodiphenyl ether-4′-sulfonic acid — with bis(naphthalic anhydride)s. The sulfonated polyethers and polynaphthylimides thus obtained contain sulfonic acid groups in the side chains.

Abstract2-Sulfonate p-terephthalic acid (sTA) was synthesized, and sulfonated polybenzimidazoles (sPBI) were prepared by direct polycondensation of 3,3’- diaminobenzidine (DAB) and sTA with 4,4’-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBBA) or 2,2’- bis(4-carboxylphenyl)-hexafluoropropane (BCHFP). Thus the ether groups and hexafluoroisopropylidene units were incorporated into the backbone of the sPBI in order to improve the flexibility and solubility. The sPBI based on OBBA showed poor solubility, while the sPBI containing hexafluoroisopropylidene units were soluble in common solvents. sPBI-20 ~ sPBI-60 could form tough and transparent membranes by solution casting. sPBI indicated high thermal stability, the 5% weight loss temperature (T5%) which was higher than 520°C, decreased with the increase of degree of sulfonation. sPBI-20 ~ sPBI-60 showed no glass transition at temperatures lower than 380°C. In addition, sPBI showed low water uptake, low swelling ratio as well as excellent resistance to oxidation. But sPBI exhibited low proton conductivity because of the strong acid-base interactions between basic benzimidazole and sulfonic acid groups.

Poly (aniline-co-2-methoxy aniline-5-sulfonic acid) (PAMAS) was synthesized by an oxidative polymerization in this paper. The resulted copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. The PAMAS fibrous membranes and PAMAS/PEO fibrous membranes were prepared via electrospinning. The influence of the molecular weight of PEO and the ratio of PAMAS/PEO in spinning solution on the fibrous morphology was studied. The results showed that PAMAS has fiber-forming ability separately. The addition of PEO was helpful to the the electrospinning of PAMAS. With the increasing of PEO’s molecular weight, the average diameter of the PAMAS/PEO fibers increased. With the increasing of PAMAS content, the fibrous average diameter has an increasing tendency.
