Subject Outlook for the mining sector. Significance On March 10, Andrew Michelmore, chief executive of MMG, the overseas mining subsidiary of state-owned China Minmetals Corporation, said that his priority was getting its giant Las Bambas mining complex in Apurimac to start commercial production. Las Bambas, which President Ollanta Humala officially inaugurated last month, is the latest of several new large Peruvian copper mines to come on stream. Impacts The delay of controversial projects is likely to allay community opposition, though further bouts of conflict are still likely. A new government, taking office in July, is unlikely to change policy toward the sector in fundamental ways. As a result of projects like Las Bambas, Peru may become the world's second-largest producer of copper, after Chile.
