X-rays (MoKα) have been used as a radiation probe to evaluate the interference functions I(K) (or structure factors) of liquid Cu, Mg and Cu-Mg alloys with 49, 66, and 86 at. % Mg at temperatures about 50°C above the liquidus. Employing the transmission technique, I(K) has been determined in the range of K = 4π sin Θ/λ between 0.8 A-1 and 12.5 A-1. All I(K) of the alloys exhibit a premaximum at K = 1.5 A-1.The partial interference functions Iij(K) have been determined, and it was found that the assumption of concentration independence of Iij(K) yielded reduced partial distribution functions Gij(r), the weighted sum of which were only in fair agreement with G(r), the Fourier transform of F(K) = K[I(K)-1].The positions, r, of the first peak in G(r) and the coordination number, η, determined from the radial distribution function 4π r2 ρ(r) = r G(r) + 4πr2 ρo, where ρo is the average atomic density of the alloy, show a negative deviation from a straight line when plotted as a function of concentration, which might be considered as evidence for the existence of short-range order in the liquid. The uneven temporal and partial distribution of water resources in Hellas, and especially southeastern regions, has resulted in the construction of various water systems for collection and storage of rainwater, since their very early habitation. Ever since, technologies for the construction and use of several types of cisterns and other relevant hydraulic strictures have been developed. The main diachronic achievements in rainwater harvesting and use in Hellas from the earliest times of humankind to the present is studied. Emphasis is given to the periods of great achievements such as the Hellenistic and the Roman. The major necessity of water justifies not only the innovations found throughout the historical time-line of these constructions but also the most advanced engineering of each era applied to these constructions. Also, the importance of this hydrotechnology and the concept of the value of water-saving to present and future times is considered. Aspects referring to hygienic precautions for the purity of the water collected and stored are another issue that is worth examining.

ABSTRACTCompressibility of anatase nano particles of TiO2 changes from the bulk counterpart. This has been associated with amorphization and compaction. The behavior of such systems under extreme conditions is examined using a shell partial distribution function and some comparison made with rutile and baddeylite polytypes based nano structures. Particle energies of rutile and baddeylite nano particles appear to be rather size independent as compared to the anatase polytypes. The latter is associated with large relaxations and re-bonding in the relatively soft anatase phase of nano TiO2.

AbstractWe report the first VLBA images of the nuclei in eight objects from the 3CR complete sample of 25 lobe-dominated quasars (LDQs): 3C 207, 3C 208, 3C 212, 3C 245, 3C 249.1, 3C 263, 3C 270.1, and 3C 275.1. These images reveal core-jet structures of considerable extent and complexity. In combination with earlier VLBI work on the 3CR LDQ sample, the partial distribution of apparent parsec-scale jet speeds for ten objects is relatively flat up to ~ 5h−1c, or perhaps even ~ 10h−1c. While this is not inconsistent with simple beaming models and quasar-FR II radio galaxy unification, it is crucial to obtain the complete speed distribution for truly definitive tests. Work is in progress on multi-frequency, dual-polarization, and phasereferencing VLBA observations on selected objects in the sample.
