This study was carried out to appraise SIWES in sixteen (16) tertiary institutions in Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria using descriptive method. Among other things, it investigated the percentage of SIWES unit in tertiary institutions in the state that has: (i) a structure; (ii) budget; (iii) coordinators’ tenure of office; and (v) a succession plan for coordinators. The study engaged a purposive sampling technique to select one participant from each institution and used descriptive statistics to analyze the data. These include frequency distribution, percentage and ranking. The study among other things concluded that 13(81.3%) tertiary institutions had SIWES structure while 03(19.7%) did not have; 5(31.2%) tertiary institutions had SIWES budget while the majority-11(68.8%) did not have; 5(31.2%) tertiary institutions had SIWES coordinators tenure of office while the majority-11(68.8%) did not have. The study also concluded that no institution (0%) had a succession plan for SIWES coordinators. Based on its findings, recommendations are made to improve the SIWES unit in higher education systems in the state.

Intention To Breastfeed

Introduction Breastfeeding is a public health practice that is critical for the survival of infants and young children. This study aimed at determining the knowledge, attitude, and future intention to breastfeed among female undergraduates in tertiary institutions in Ekiti State, Southwest Nigeria. Methodology: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 1312 female students of the tertiary institutions in Ekiti State. By convenience sampling, female students were invited to participate in the study after giving verbal consent and those studying medical, nursing, and other courses allied to medicine were excluded. Internal consistency of the data obtained from this research instrument was determined using Cronbach’s coefficient Alpha with a reliability value of 0.82. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25. Descriptive as well as inferential statistics were computed. Results were summarized as frequencies and percentages. The differences in knowledge, attitude, and intention to practice breastfeeding as well as other responses among the participants were compared among age groups, faculties and the sources of information using Chi-square test. Result Although 93% of the respondents agreed that breast milk is important for the development of the infant’s brain thereby demonstrating good knowledge; 51.6% of the respondents demonstrated poor perception to breastfeeding believing breastfeeding makes the breast to sag while only 34% of the respondents indicated their intention to breastfeed their future babies. Conclusion The intention to breastfeed among our study participants was poor. This study revealed the need to increase awareness about breastfeeding and its benefits among this huge population of future mothers.

The study examined the relationship between human resource management and academic staff productivity in tertiary institutions in Southwest, Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted in the study. The population consisted of 21,784 academic staff of the public tertiary institutions in Southwest, Nigeria. The sample for this study consisted of 1,324 academic staff selected from 12 public tertiary institutions (Federal and State) in the Southwest, Nigeria. Multi – stage sampling procedure was used in the selection of the sample for the study. The data for this study were collected through the use of two sets of self – designed questionnaire tagged “Human Resource Management Questionnaire (HRMQ)” and “Academic Staff productivity Questionnaire (ASPQ)” The instruments were subjected to screening by experts in the areas of Tests and Measurement and Educational Management. The reliability of the instruments was carried out using the test re-test method which yielded reliability coefficient of 0.80 and 0.76 for HRMQ and ASPQ respectively. The data obtained for the study were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that performance appraisal, employee relation and job design were significantly related to academic staff productivity. It was recommended among others that the job roles of each academic staff should be clearly spelt out by management of tertiary institutions. And, job performance of academic staff should be continually appraised by management of tertiary institutions through the Head of Departments. Again, the management should continue with the trend of communication flow among academic staff and between academic staff and other stakeholders in the institution to foster cordial relationship.

The aim of this study was to understand and compare residence students’ awareness and knowledge of the impacts of their reported energy use practices, and to explore their attitudes and reported behaviour regarding energy saving using data collected from three different higher institutions in Southwest, Nigeria namely Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo and Adeyemi College of Education, (ACE), Ondo. The findings revealed that there is a significant difference between the three tertiary institutions regarding their level of awareness with RUGIPO having the highest and ACE having the lowest awareness level (F = 3.571, p = 0.002). The research also found that ACE exhibits the highest scores for almost all aspects of energy use behaviour. The correlation analysis shows a significant correlation between level of awareness and energy use behaviour (R =0.897**, p=0.001).The result shows no significant difference between the level of awareness and socio-demographic characteristics of respondents except gender in RUGIPO (F = 7.654, p = 0.007). The result shows no significant difference between the energy use behaviour and socio-demographic characteristics of respondents except age  = 23.407, p = 0.000) and academic qualification  = 28.232, p = 0.000) for turning off light when not needed.

The study examined the relative contributions of psychological attributes (loneliness, extraversion and self-esteem) and gender to smartphone addiction. The study was a survey that utilized a cross-sectional design that purposively sampled 271 in-school smartphone users. The sample was made up of 165 male and 106 female undergraduates selected from three public tertiary institutions in southwest Nigeria. Data were collected with a questionnaire that contained standardized scales that measured the study variables. These were revalidated to ascertain their suitability for use in the present study and all yielded acceptable alpha coefficients: loneliness (α = .88), extraversion (α = .61), self-esteem (α = .80), and Test of mobile-phone dependence use (α = .94). Also examined in the study was the influence of gender on smartphone addiction. Result indicated significant positive relationships among loneliness (r = .29; P <.05), extraversion (r = .43; P<.001), self-esteem (r = .48; P<.001) and smartphone addiction respectively. Result further revealed significant joint influence of loneliness, extraversion and self-esteem on smartphone addiction (R2 = .33; P <.01). There was no significant gender influence on smartphone addiction (p >.05). Personality profile of smartphone addicts should form a cardinal ingredient of treatment and management protocols of the condition.
