Mode shapes (MSs) have been extensively used to detect structural damage. This paper presents a new non-model-based damage identification method that uses measured MSs to identify damage in plates. A MS damage index (MSDI) is proposed to identify damage near regions with consistently high values of MSDIs associated with MSs of different modes. A MS of a pseudo-undamaged plate can be constructed for damage identification using a polynomial of a properly determined order that fits the corresponding MS of a damaged plate, if the associated undamaged plate is geometrically smooth and made of materials that have no stiffness and mass discontinuities. It is shown that comparing a MS of a damaged plate with that of a pseudo-undamaged plate is better for damage identification than with that of an undamaged plate. Effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method for identifying damage of different positions and areas are numerically investigated using different MSs; effects of crucial factors that determine effectiveness of the proposed method are also numerically investigated. Damage in the form of a machined thickness reduction area was introduced to an aluminum plate; it was successfully identified by the proposed method using measured MSs of the damaged plate.

Abstract Purpose: The objective of this study was to predict the preoperative pathological grading and survival period of Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) by establishing models, including a radiomics model with greater mental caking as the imaging observation index, a clinical model including clinical indexes, and a combination model of these two.Methods: A total of 88 PMP patients were selected. Clinical data of patients, including age, sex, preoperative serum tumor markers [CEA, CA125, and CA199], survival time, and preoperative computed tomography (CT) images were analyzed. Three models (clinical model, radiomics model and joint model) were used to predict PMP pathological grading. The models’ diagnostic efficiency was compared and analyzed by building the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Simultaneously, the impact of PMP’s different pathological grades was evaluated.Results: The results showed that the radiomics model based on the CT’s greater omental caking, an area under the ROC curve ([AUC] = 0.878), and the combined model (AUC = 0.899) had diagnostic power n for determining PMP pathological grade.Conclusion: The imaging radiomics model based on CT greater omental caking can be used to predict PMP pathological grade, which is important in the treatment selection method and prognosis assessment.


Optimization of business process assists in efficient organization of business process. For the success of optimization of business process, a simulation model based on gap processes for the analysis of buyers' burstiness in business process has been proposed. However, the model has to be validated. The aim of the research is to implement a validation approach to the simulation model based on gap processes for the optimization of business process underpinning elaboration of a new research question on the model validity. The meaning of the key concepts of “validation,” “model validation,” and “model validation approach” is studied. The results of the present research show that the application of real system measurements validates the simulation model for the optimization of business process. The novel contribution of the manuscript is revealed in the newly created research question on the proposed model validity. Directions of future research are proposed.
