Seasonal variations in relative values of the main gas components of the thermosphere [O]/[N2] and [O2]/[O] were received at the station Norilsk during the period 2003–2013. Estimates were made using a technique the authors developed and data from the Norilsk digisonde (69° N, 88° E) for heights below the ionospheric layer F1 maximum under quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions in different seasons. We established that the [O2]/[O] ratio in the quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions in all seasons by the end of 2013 decreased from 10 to 20 % relative to the values of 2003. The [O]/[N2] ratio for the same conditions increased to 17 %.

Long-term variations of [O]/[N2] and [O2]/[O] ratios of dominant gas components of the thermosphere are analyzed for 2003–2013. The variations are estimated using the technique developed by the authors and Irkutsk (52° N, 104° E) digisonde data for heights lower than the ionospheric layer F1 maximum, quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions, and different seasons. For summer quiet and disturbed conditions, the [O2]/[O] ratio is found to be maximum during long solar activity minimum.

Analyses are presented of monthly values of the occurrence of the ionospheric parameters j~ E; and foE; for the South Pacific stations Christchurch and Rarotonga over three complete solar cycles. For each station both pre-midnight and post-midnight data show seasonal variations similar to daytime with the high latitude station showing a winter enhancement. Data fluctuations of scales longer than a year are very pronounced compared with variations in other ionospheric parameters. No correlations exist between any of the data sets and either the sunspot number Rz or geomagnetic index. Long-term variations in fi.E, and fo E; are uncorrelated at a particular station.

More than 4000 beard samples were collected from a single person every morning over a 12-year period and analyzed using a standard-free method. We detected significant annual variations in the concentrations of magnesium and calcium in the study period, although significant monthly and seasonal variations were not noted. Calcium tends not to be obtained from season-specific foods or drinks, so its variations may be affected by changes in the metabolism of the body. In contrast, however, potassium showed marked long-term variations with significant seasonal differences. As our previous studies confirmed that green vegetables contain large quantities of potassium and that their supply and consumption increase from May to July, the seasonal variations in potassium concentration were attributed to the ingestion of green vegetables. Although magnesium is also contained in green vegetables in large quantities, its principle supply sources are diverse and its concentration did not show any clear seasonal changes.

AbstractThe mixture effect of the long-term variations is a main challenge in single channel singular spectrum analysis (SSA) for the reconstruction of the annual signal from GRACE data. In this paper, a nonlinear long-term variations deduction method is used to improve the accuracy of annual signal reconstructed from GRACE data using SSA. Our method can identify and eliminate the nonlinear long-term variations of the equivalent water height time series recovered from GRACE. Therefore the mixture effect of the long-term variations can be avoided in the annual modes of SSA. For the global terrestrial water recovered from GRACE, the peak to peak value of the annual signal is between 1.4 cm and 126.9 cm, with an average of 11.7 cm. After the long-term and the annual term have been deducted, the standard deviation of residual time series is between 0.9 cm and 9.9 cm, with an average of 2.1 cm. Compared with the traditional least squares fitting method, our method can reflect the dynamic change of the annual signal in global terrestrial water, more accurately with an uncertainty of between 0.3 cm and 2.9 cm.
