Intensive renewal of the socio-economic, scientific and technical spheres and the spiritual life of society determines high requirements for the capacity of the individual. Graduates of higher educational institutions determine the future of our country, so they must not only have a high level of professional readiness, but also be physically enduring, efficient and healthy. These personality traits are formed and improved during the student years by means of physical education. Physical education in higher educational institutions is an integral part of education. The level of their physical development and health depends on the quality of the organization and conduct of classes with students. At present, the health of the younger generation is of serious concern. Numerous works of modern researchers point to an increase in the level of diseases and focus on a decrease in the functional resistance of the body of students to physical activity. The subject of the research is the methodology of using means of physical culture and health-improving orientation in physical education classes. The aim of the research is to determine the influence of physical culture and health-improving orientation classes on the physical fitness of first-year students. Research objectives: to conduct an analysis of scientific and methodological literature and advanced pedagogical experience in relation to the topic under study; to determine the level of physical fitness of female students, using complex testing and to reveal the dynamics of indicators of physical fitness; to develop a program of physical education classes to improve the level of physical fitness and health of female students; to experimentally check the developed training methodology and determine its feasibility of introducing it into the educational process in physical education. In the course of organizing and conducting a scientific experiment, the following methods were used: analysis and generalization of scientific and methodological literature, pedagogical observations, control testing, mathematical processing of results. The study involved first-year students who study at the National University "Odesa Law Academy" and do not play sports. In the course of the experiment, a program of physical education classes was developed, which included sets of exercises for the development of physical qualities, as well as a health-improving orientation. These complexes were used in each physical education lesson twice a week on a schedule. The study made it possible to draw the following conclusions. The analysis of the results shows that at the initial stage of the research the majority of female students showed low results in all the tests. After conducting classes according to our methodology, at the second stage of the experiment, the results for some tests improved significantly. Thus, the proposed program of health related training had a positive impact on the results of physical fitness of female students.

Statement of the problem. Today, when the epidemic raises specific requirements to the sanitary standards, teachers of the Physical Culture and Sports discipline need to take the maximum use of open spaces for their classes. The most common exercises for the autumn and spring periods of the academic year are cross-country running for different distances, general and strength development exercises in outdoor sports grounds. During the stable snow cover period, physical education focuses on ski training. Such activities have been always used as a perfect way of preventing respiratory diseases and virus infections. The problem and the task set before the teaching staff is support and stimulation of the students’ interest to outdoor training all year round, since only regular practice combined with knowledge in the sphere of physical culture and sports may develop a need for physical activity in the future. In this situation, it appears natural to add orienteering in the areas adjacent to the ski stadiums to the Physical Culture and Sports classes. The purpose of the article is to develop a modular structure for building the program of the Physical Culture and Sports discipline for students of non-physical culture profile during year-round outdoor activities using orienteering means, ski and general physical training. The methodology of the research includes the basic principles of physical education at higher educational institutions, methodological basics of physical development through ski training at the student age, the basics of embedding orienteering into the physical education process, analysis and generalization of the academic publications dedicated to the practical implementation of the Physical Culture and Sports discipline at higher educational institutions. The research results allow us to state that the application of the modular structure of the program of the Physical Culture and Sport academic discipline on the basis of two kinds of sports – ski training and orienteering, as well as the block of general physical training, which is mandatory in all training programs on this discipline is a more effective form for the implementation of this academic discipline. As a result of introducing this block structure there was an increase in the average attendance of physical education classes by students of the experimental group in the autumn semester from 74.56 ± 3.78 to 88.24 ± 4.62, in the spring the numbers increased by 13-14% (p <0.05), namely, from 76.23 ± 4.15 to 89.15 ± 4.44. The results of strength tests from the Physical Traning Standards (GTO) complex also significantly increased owing to the concentration of general physical training on a specially selected block, where these exercises were performed with multiple effortful repetitions not exceeding 30% – 40% of the possible individual maximum. In the ski training block, the students of the experimental group, on average, in each lesson were able to walk longer distance, longer by 29% by boys and by 32% by girls compared to the students of the control group. Orienteering block in autumn and spring allows students to fully master the competitive exercise in this sport. Conclusion. The designed block-based structure may be recommended for implementation in the training program among university students majoring in non-sport subjects with access to skiing centers equipped with skiing tracks and some mapped forest area. This is especially relevant in the difficult epidemiological situation in the country when the need for open-air training among students complying with all the applicable sanitary standards becomes extremely acute.

Background. Studies of various scholars confirm the relation between the application of stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence, but there is a lack of research about the relationship between individual coping strategies and emotional intelligence levels among the first- and the fourth-year students. The aim of the research was to reveal peculiarities of emotional intelligence and stress coping strategies of undergraduate students of physical education and sport study programs.Methods. The Shutte Self-Assessment Questionnaire was used to measure the level of emotional intelligence of the participants (Schutte & Malouff, 1999). The questionnaire composed by Grakauskas and Valickas (2006) was used to identify the stress coping strategies. It consists of four factors: social support factor, problem-solving factor, emotional discharge factor and avoidance factor. The research was based on the following ethical principles: confidentiality, anonymity, impartiality and privacy. The first- and the fourth-year students of the Lithuanian Sports University and Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences, Physical Education and Sports Programs were surveyed. The research sample consisted of 123 participants. Male participants comprised 66.7% of the sample, and the female participants comprised 33.3%. of the sample. The first-year undergraduates made up 57.7% of the sample, and the fourth-year undergraduates made up 42.3% of the sample.Results. Analyzing the data on the stress coping strategies according to the participants studying experience, it was found that the fourth-year students used the social support strategy more frequently in comparison with the first-year students. In addition, the fourth-year students applied emotional discharge and avoidance strategies more often than the first-year students. Comparing stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence according to the gender of participants, no statistically significant differences were found. There was a statistically significant relationship between the stress coping strategy and the ability to evaluate and express one’s emotions.Conclusions. Comparing emotional intelligence of the first- and the fourth-year students of physical education and sports study programs, no statistically significant differences were found. Comparison of stress coping strategies applied by the first- and the fourth-year students of physical education and sports degree programs revealed that the fourth-year students tended to use social support, emotional discharge and avoidance strategies more frequently than the first-year students. Comparison of stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence according to gender did not show any statistically significant differences. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence, though it was a weak, but significant difference between emotional intelligence components such as the ability to express and manage emotions and problem-solving focused stress coping strategy. Keywords: stress, stress management strategies, emotional intelligence.

In this study, experienced physical education teachers’ observation skills in teaching situations are compared to that of first- and last-year student teachers. The 56 participants were shown 12 slides from a gymnastics lesson, and after viewing it for 4 s, they were asked to report what they had seen. The number of items and critical events reported were analyzed. No significant differences were found between the three groups on the number of events reported or for the number and duration of the eye fixations. Significant differences were found for the number of critical events reported and fixated. Last-year students and experienced teachers correctly reported more critical events on the slide scenes than first year students, but there were no significant differences in observational capacities between last year students and experienced teachers. This study demonstrated the need for observational training, not only during preservice, but also for inservice teachers.
