AbstractThe internal crowdsourcing-based ideation within a company can be defined as an involvement of its staff, specialists, managers, and other employees, to propose solution ideas for a pre-defined problem. This paper addresses a question, how many participants of the company-internal ideation process are required to nearly reach the ideation limit for the problems with a finite number of workable solutions. To answer the research question, the author proposes a set of metrics and a non-linear ideation performance function with a positive decreasing slope and ideation limit for the closed-ended problems. Three series of experiments helped to explore relationships between the metric attributes and resulted in a mathematical model which allows companies to predict the productivity metrics of their crowdsourcing ideation activities such as quantity of different ideas and ideation limit as a function of the number of contributors, their average personal creativity and ideation efficiency of a contributors’ group.

The mechanical properties of the steering column have a significant influence on the comfort and stability of a vehicle. In order for the mechanical properties to be improved, the rotary swaging process of the steering column is studied in this article. The process parameters, including axial feed rate, hammerhead speed, and hammerhead radial reduction, are systematically analyzed and optimized based on a multi-objective optimization design. The response surface methodology and the genetic algorithm are employed for optimal process parameters to be obtained. The maximum damage value, the maximum forming load, and the equivalent strain difference obtained with the optimal process parameters are, respectively, decreased by 30.09%, 7.44%, and 57.29% compared to the initial results. The comparative results present that the quality of the steering column is improved. The torque experiments and fatigue experiments are conducted with the optimal steering column. The maximum torque is measured to be 260 NM, and the service life is measured to be 2 weeks (40 NM, 2500 times), which are, respectively, increased by 8.3% and 8.69% compared to the initial results. The above results display that the mechanical properties of the steering column are optimized to verify the feasibility of the multi-objective optimization method.

Seaworthiness characteristics are one of the key conditions for the success of the seaplane. So the improvement of these characteristics is an important task. It was suggested that the using of amortized floats could improve the seaworthiness characteristics of seaplane. For this purpose series of experiments were carried out and mathematical model was developed.

To assist in predicting the performance of omni-directional propelled vehicles a series of experiments has been conducted to measure the interaction between two closely spaced ductedazimuthing thrusters. The thrusters were tested below a shallow draft ground board in a towing tank at a spacing of approximately 2 propeller diameters. Measurements were made of forces acting on a single thruster for a range of operating conditions and similarly on two thrusters for a range of relative positions. The results show that forces from the trailing thruster are heavily affected by interaction, particularly due to impingement of the race from the leading thruster, where as forces from the leading thruster remain essentially unaffected despite its proximity to the trailing thruster. A semi-empirical mathematical model suitable for simulation of omni-directional vehicle dynamics is presented. The model is based on the trajectory of the race from the leading thruster derived from momentum considerations with additional empirical relations to account for other more minor flow effects. Comparison of the predicted and measured results show satisfactory agreement.

Different load histories of train wheels lead to high variance of material properties on the running tread. Those cause unpredictable tool break and reduce process reliability. The measurement of magnetic Barkhausen noise and acoustic emission allow to gain information of the workpiece and the running process, to find optimal process parameters for the reconditioning of every individual wheel. Typical issues in train wheel machining and results of measurements are presented.

Rotary punching is a sheet metal blanking process which utilizes shearing tools fixed to a pair of rollers. The polyurethane pad is adopted as the die instead of rigid mold because it has the advantages of wide hardness range and high load-bear capacity. Due to the application of polyurethane pad, the surrounding region adjacent to the pierced hole will occur to plastically deform and deflect, which greatly differs from that in the conventional blanking. In this paper, the effects of blank material and thickness, polyurethane hardness, punch penetration depth on deformation behavior were mathematically analyzed and modeled, and then a series of experiments through varying process parameters were conducted to validate the relationship between process parameters and product quality. The degree of sample deflection was exactly measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the deformed area varies with different blank elongations and increases with increasing blank thickness for a given material. When polyurethane pad with low hardness level is employed, it results in large area deformation and quality degradation. Moreover, the deflection degree around the hole edge becomes more severe along with punch penetration, but the penetration depth along blank thickness is not in proportion to the amount of punch advancement.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose and evaluate the selection of materials for the selective laser sintering (SLS) process, which is used for low-volume production in the engineering (e.g. light weight machines, architectural modelling, high performance application, manufacturing of fuel cell, etc.), medical and many others (e.g. art and hobbies, etc.) with a keen focus on meeting customer requirements. Design/methodology/approach – The work starts with understanding the optimal process parameters, an appropriate consolidation mechanism to control microstructure, and selection of appropriate materials satisfying the property requirement for specific application area that leads to optimization of materials. Findings – Fabricating the parts using optimal process parameters, appropriate consolidation mechanism and selecting the appropriate material considering the property requirement of applications can improve part characteristics, increase acceptability, sustainability, life cycle and reliability of the SLS-fabricated parts. Originality/value – The newly proposed material selection system based on properties requirement of applications has been proven, especially in cases where non-experts or student need to select SLS process materials according to the property requirement of applications. The selection of materials based on property requirement of application may be used by practitioners from not only the engineering field, medical field and many others like art and hobbies but also academics who wish to select materials of SLS process for different applications.

This paper presents an investigation on the surface roughness of burnished hypereutectic Al-Si alloy ¾ a widely used light-weight and wear resistant material in automobile, electric and aircraft industries. Based on the techniques of Taguchi, an orthogonal experiment plan with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is performed and a second-order regressive mathematical model is established. Meanwhile, the influence of process parameters on surface roughness and its mechanism are discussed. From the experiments, it is found that burnishing process is effective to decrease surface roughness of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy components, in which, all input parameters have a significant effect on the surface roughness. To achieve a small surface roughness, the optimum process parameters are recommended.
