Sino-French war of 1884–1885 on land and at sea was significant as the beginning of a new stage of active French colonial policy in the Far East. It was a continuation of the Second French-Vietnamese war of 1883–1886, more known as “Tonkin Campaign”. France wanted to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a protectorate there. Tonkin belonged to Chinese sphere of interest because of Hong (Red) river which connected China’s southern provinces with the sea as an important trade route. Armed Conflict between France and China became inevitable. Military operations of the Far East squadron under the command of Admiral Amédée Courbet (1827–1885) become an important part of the campaign: Defeat of Chinese fleet in the Battle of Fuzhou, capture of Keelung, blockade of Taiwan’s ports, occupation of the Pescadores. This article for the first time introduces in the Russian language the “letters of sea cadet Jean” — letters from a sea cadet of Courbet’s squadron who depicted different episodes of the campaign, including landing and stay at Taiwan, relations with local authorities and population, Chinese and aborigines. For the first time the letters were published in 1890/91 in French and re-published with some notes in 2005; there is no translation into any foreign language so far. Written by a young seaman under a culture shock from a completely new and surprising world these letters are valuable for the sincerity of the story, freshness of the impressions and certain literary merits.

The article studies the formation and development of the fuel and energy resource base in the Far East of the USSR on the eve of and during the Great Patriotic War. Research objectives: to determine the features of the formation in the Far East of an industrial complex for the extraction, processing and distribution of energy resources; to analyze the production activities of coal mining, electric power and oil industries; to identify the main challenges of the development of the fuel and energy resource base and show the ways of their solution by the Soviet party and economic bodies in the period under review. The methodological basis of the study is traditional historical methods, as well as the method of system analysis. The study reveals that the development of the fuel and energy resource base of the region was due to its isolation from the industrially developed regions of the country, the specifics of economic development of the region, the location of fuel-producing regions and large industrial consumers of energy resources, the complexity of the geological structure of coal deposits, and the limited financial, material and labor resources, incomplete construction and reconstruction of energy facilities. The author concludes that the central and local party and economic bodies made a lot of organizational efforts to develop the fuel and energy resource base of the Far East and to solve complex issues of material and technical support for enterprises, especially during the Great Patriotic War.

The article objective is to represent the analysis results of the flow of published documents that highlight the contribution of Novosibirsk city and Novosibirsk Region residents to the victory over fascism during the Great Patriotic war. The documentary flow consisted of more than 600 publications over a 30-year period, which was selected of the regional bibliographic database “Scientific Sibirika” generated by the State Public Scientific and Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences using analytical services. The paper presents a brief scientometric analysis of a document corpus, as well as features of its temporal, thematic, and type-specific structure. Emphasis is placed on the characteristics of monographic publications: their variety is shown, and monograph bibliographic descriptions are given. The article lists the most productive periodicals and thematic collections on the topic, scientific events, where discussions took place on the life of the Siberian region and its inhabitants during the war years. It names Novosiberians – participants of military operations, materials about whom are included into the database. Authors with high publication activity on the above-mentioned subjects are identified. It is concluded that the thematic section “History of Siberia and the Far East” of the database “Scientific Sibirika” serves as a reliable source base for historical and regional studies. Introducing modern technologies in the bibliographic practice makes it possible to work remotely not only with bibliographic descriptions, but with full texts of electronic documents as well.

The article is devoted to the content analyses of materials covering Boxer rebellion in China, they were published in Irkutsk newspaper The Eastern Review, 1900–1901. Authors’ choice was motivated with three reasons. First, the newspaper covered Eastern Russian regions’ issues, as well as Russia’s policy in the Far East, where these regions were being involved. Secondly, Boxer rebellion was one of most important events at the turn of the XX century; it defined Russia’s strategy on its Eastern borders in terms of competition with Western European countries and Japan for economic and political influence in the Celestial Empire. Thirdly, Boxer rebellion in the Siberian regional press’s point of view was not studied properly, so it needs further research to understand a provincial newspaper activities process, never having experience in military operations coverage, these activities quite surprisingly required a new way of operation. We analyzed hundreds of texts on military actions in China, Chinese Imperial Court position, contradictions between allied powers, which took part in the suppression of the rebellion in view of of post-war establishment in the East. The main focus of the research was the transformation of the newspaper’s conception to meet the needs for military information; genres of published materials about the Boxer rebellion; information obtaining technology; the degree of its authenticity and objectivity. We also examined how editorial staff created Russia’s positive image as a disinterested peace-maker, though Russian geopolitical interests had been having lasting position on the Chinese territory. Mass-media development, usage of various methods to obtain information, inclusion of opinions of conflicting sides; responsibility before readers for coverage of events allowed the newspaper not only to display objective description of current events in China but also to forecast post-war development of the Far East.
