Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly expanding within the sphere of health care, offering the potential to enhance the efficiency of care delivery, diminish costs, and reduce diagnostic and therapeutic errors. As the field of otolaryngology also explores use of AI technology in patient care, a number of ethical questions warrant attention prior to widespread implementation of AI. This commentary poses many of these ethical questions for consideration by the otolaryngologist specifically, using the 4 pillars of medical ethics—autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice—as a framework and advocating both for the assistive role of AI in health care and for the shared decision-making, empathic approach to patient care.

AbstractThe integration of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into the practice of medicine holds much promise. Yet, the opportunity to leverage these tools carries with it an equal responsibility to ensure that principles of equity are incorporated into their implementation and use. Without such efforts, tools will potentially reflect the myriad of ways in which data, algorithmic, and analytic biases can be produced, with the potential to widen inequities by race, ethnicity, gender, and other sociodemographic factors implicated in disparate health outcomes. We propose a set of strategic assertions to examine before, during, and after adoption of these technologies in order to facilitate healthcare equity across all patient population groups. The purpose is to enable generalists to promote engagement with technology companies and co-create, promote, or support innovation and insights that can potentially inform decision-making and health care equity.

Guatemala’s Indigenous Maternal Health Care: A System in Need of DecolonizationAbstract: Guatemala’s Maternal Mortality Ratios are the highest in Central America. These ratios vary drastically among ethnic groups, the highest occurring among rural Mayan women. As Guatemala struggles to reduce its MMRs, the controversy centers on Mayan Traditional Birth Attendants. This research investigates the role of Mayan traditional midwives within the framework of Postcolonialism. The results show a country under the legacy of colonization, manifested in the female colonized body. A paradigm shift is crucial in relation to both traditional birth  attendants and their patients. Indigenous women’s reproductive health will not improve until health care, a legacy of Colonialism, is decolonized.Key words: Maya, woman, indigenous, maternal health, mortality, Colonialism, Postcolonialism, Decolonialism, midwives.

Abstract The Prophet (PBUH) had highlighted the features of the Islamic state and its purposes. This was manifested amongst the very first decisions he (PBUH) made, one of them was the establishment of mosque, where the activities of this young state started, as well as the establishment of a social and solidarity relationship between the al-muhajirun and the ansar. Among the decisions also was the declaration of the Constitution of Medina, the constitution that declared relationship between the entities of Medina settlers. This study seeks to demonstrate the contributions of the Waqf to scientific development, the development of educational incubators, the emergence of Islamic schools, the role of the Waqf in health care and the construction of hospitals. The results of the study indicate that Waqf system played a significant role in flourishing Islamic civilization in general and in the education system and health in particular. It also shows us the role of the Waqf in guiding thoughts and spreading curriculum or doctrine defined by the endowers. On the health side, the Waqf has led to a paradigm shift, and hence reflected on the lives of people. The study also indicates that excluding educational and health services out of the beneficial and profitable framework, it may have negative effects. Keywords: Endowment, Education, Islamic School, Healthcare.
