A New Species

A new species of ant-loving cricket, Myrmecophilus balcanicus sp. n., is described and illustrated based on individuals collected in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). It’s habitat is described. The species belongs to the subgenus Myrmecophilus Berthold, 1827. Myrmecophilus zorae Karaman, 1963 is recognized as a junior synonym of Myrmecophilus hirticaudus Fischer von Waldheim, 1846.

One new species, Paratrigonidium chloropodum sp. nov., is described from Hainan, China. The type specimens are deposited in East China Normal University, Biology of History Museum (ECNU). S. venustula is moved to genus Paratrigonidium as P. venustulum comb. nov. P. vittatum Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 syn. is the junior synonym of P. venustulum.

A new species of Taydebis Freitas, 2003 from south Brazil is described using comparative morphology and species distributions. Also, based on morphology, we transfer Neonympha melobosis Capronnier, 1874 (formerly placed in Paryphthimoides Forster, 1964) to Taydebis, and recognize Euptychia peculiaris Butler, 1874 as its junior synonym (syn. nov.). Furthermore, the monotypic Prenda Freitas & Mielke, 2011 is herein treated as junior synonym of Taydebis based on morphology, molecular and ecological evidence. Species of Taydebis are endemic and restricted to south Brazil, and now comprises three species: Taydebis guria Zacca, Casagrande & Mielke sp. nov., T. melobosis comb. nov. and T. clarissa Freitas & Mielke comb. nov. To continue clarifying Euptychiina taxonomy, Euptychia undulata Butler, 1867 (also formerly placed in Paryphthimoides) is transferred to Hermeuptychia Forster, 1964, and we provide additional information on its taxonomy, morphology, and distribution. Diagnoses, illustrations, and distributional maps are provided for all taxa except T. clarissa comb. nov.

The species of Charaxwere reviewed by Lucena (1987) who a little later (1989) added three new species to the genus. Examination of recently collected specimens from museum collections documented the more extensive geographic distribution for most species and revealed the existence of a new species in which superficial neuromasts were discovered and are herein described. These skin structures were also detected in C. metae Eigenmann, 1922. Anal- and pelvic-fin hooks previously observed only on the anal-fin of one species of the genus are described herein in some other species. Charax unimaculatus Lucena is considered a junior synonym of C. michaeli Lucena. All the species are redescribed and the new species described.

The Afrotropical species described as Trachyphloeini Lacordaire, 1863 were examined and their taxonomic status is revised. Atrachyphloeus Voss, 1962 is proposed as a junior synonym of Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842, Cathormiocerus africanus Hoffmann, 1965 as a junior synonym of Tapinomorphus sylvicola Voss, 1962 and Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 as a junior synonym of Platycopes tuberculatus Marshall, 1906. Atrachyphloeus convergens Voss, 1962 is transferred to the genus Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842, Trachyphloeus hardenbergi Marshall, 1923 and T. notulatus Boheman, 1842 to Glyptosomus Schoenherr, 1847, Trachyphloeus nanus Fåhraeus, 1871 to Pentatrachyphloeus Voss, 1974, Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 to Platycopes Schoenherr, 1823 and Trachyphloeus setiger Fåhraeus, 1871 to Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842. “Trachyphloeosoma” brevicolle Voss, 1974, “Trachyphloeus” brevis Boheman, 1842, “T”. nodifrons Hoffmann, 1968 and “T”. squalidus Boheman, 1842 are provisionally left in their current genera, but new genera for them will be described in future papers. The genus Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842 has been redefined and redescribed. Lectotypes for the following species are designated (current names added in brackets where different): Cathormiocerus africanus Hoffmann, 1965 (Tapinomorphus sylvicola Voss, 1962), Trachyphloeus hardenbergi Marshall, 1923 (Glyptosomus hardenbergi (Marshall, 1923)), Trachyphloeus nanus Fåhraeus, 1871 (Pentatrachyphloeus nanus (Fåhraeus, 1871)), Trachyphloeus notulatus Boheman, 1842 (Glyptosomus notulatus (Boheman, 1842)), Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 (Platycopes tuberculatus (Marshall, 1906)), Trachyphloeus setiger Fåhraeus, 1871 (Phaylomerinthus setiger (Fåhraeus, 1871)), “Trachyphloeus” brevis Boheman in Schoenherr, 1842 and “Trachyphloeus” squalidus Boheman in Schoenherr, 1842. Two paralectotypes of Cathormiocerus africanus Hoffmann, 1965 from Tanzania are described as a new species, Tapinomorphus franzi sp. n. All type specimens are illustrated.

Holotypes of 19 species and non-type specimens preserved in the Sasa collection at The National Museum of Science, Tokyo, Japan, have been examined. The sufficient reason why Chironomus daitocedeus Sasa et Suzuki, 2001 should be treated as a junior synonym of C. javanus Kieffer, 1924 is shown. Two further species: Paratrissocladius sudagaicedeus Sasa et Tanaka, 2001 and Bryophaenocladius togatenellus Sasa et Okazawa, 1992 are transferred to Chaetocladius. Specimens from Okinawa, Miyako and Ishigaki Islands, originally reported as Rheocricotopus chalybeatus (Edwards, 1929) are identified as R. okifoveatus Sasa, 1990. A new species, Einfeldia sasai is described on the basis of specimens recorded from Minamidato Island, previously incorrectly determined as E. pagana.

Pachypops is a South American freshwater sciaenid genus characterized by having two anal-fin spines, three mental barbels, an inferior mouth, a swimbladder with a pair of short appendages anteriorly and a pair of longer appendages projected posteriorly, and the haemal spine of the first caudal distinctly expanded. Three valid Pachypops species are recognized herein. Of the six nominal species previously assigned to Pachypops, two are herein recognized as valid (Perca fourcroi and Micropogon trifilis), two are assigned to other sciaenid genera (Pachypops adspersus and Pachypops cevegei) and two are considered junior synonyms (Corvina biloba and Pachypops camposi). A seventh nominal species, Pachyurus nattereri, formerly considered a valid species of Pachyurus, is determined to be a junior synonym of Pachypops fourcroi, and lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for it. Pachypops fourcroi occurs in the Orinoco, Amazonas, Essequibo, Corantijn, and Approuague River basins, and Pachypops trifilis in rivers of Guyana and middle and lower reaches of the Rio Amazonas basin. A third valid species, Pachypops pigmaeus n. sp., is herein described from tributaries of the Rio Amazonas, Brazil.

Pleurospermum austriacum (Apiaceae) is reported from the Bistrica River basin in the Sar Mountains as a new native species in the flora of the Republic of Macedonia. This is also the first report of the genus Pleurospermum in the country?s flora.

The harvestman genus Bonea Roewer, 1914 and its type species B. sarasinorum Roewer, 1914 are redescribed based on the type material. In addition, two new species of Bonea from Hainan Island, China, are described and illustrated: B. zhui sp. nov. and B. tridigitata sp. nov. A new species of Lomanius Roewer, 1923 from Yunnan Province, China, is also described and illustrated: L. bulbosus sp. nov.. Keys to the 10 species of Bonea and the six species of Lomanius are provided. Paralomanius Goodnight & Goodnight, 1948 is revalidated from the synonymy of Lomanius, carrying as junior synonym Eulomanius Roewer, 1949, and containing two species from Micronesia (Paralomanius longipalpus Goodnight & Goodnight, 1948) and Philippines (Paralomanius mindanaoensis (Suzuki, 1977) new status). Bonea is transferred from the Ibaloniinae to Podoctinae. These are the first records of named species of Podoctidae from China.

Packard (1873) described Menopon picicola as a new species, based on ten lice taken from two species of woodpeckers of the genus Picoides—P. arcticus (Swainson, 1832) and P. dorsalis Baird, 1858—collected in Wyoming, U.S.A. in August 1872. Considering that (1) Packard (1873) neither designated a holotype nor a single type host, (2) his type material is most likely lost, and (3) no additional lice from either of those two species of Picoides have been reported in the literature, the taxonomic status of Menopon picicola has not been confirmed.

Two plant-inhabiting species of Mediolata were collected in the Iberian Peninsula during biodiversity assessments between 2000–2002. Mediolata roigi, sp. nov. and M. chanti Gonzalez were collected in Spain and Portugal respectively. The studies were conducted in citrus orchards in Portugal and apple orchards and vineyards in Spain. Because of some incorrect data in the original description of M. chanti, it is re-described. Eupalopsis vandergeesti Gomaa & Bolland is revealed to be a junior synonym of M. chanti and Mediolata mirus Chaudhri et al. is transferred to the family Eupalopsellidae under the genus Exthothoris. A key to the known species of the genus Mediolata is provided.
