The Relationship

Energy is an important material basis for social and economic development. With the rapid economic development, energy is increasingly becoming an important issue of socio-economic development. As China's "two-oriented society" pilots Hunan Province, a major breakthrough occurred in the transformation of economic growth, adjusting the industrial structure and promoting energy conservation and environmental protection, but still faces shortage of energy supply and demand and supply imbalances, impacting on sustainable economic development. This paper introduces the economic growth based on the previous results and summarized the relationship between energy consumption and classification; also introduces the theory of economic growth, industrial structure and related econometric models providing a theoretical basis and methods of analysis for this study. Secondly, through the relevant data collected and selected first from second and third industry time series data of economic growth and energy consumption of the 1990-2013 year of Hunan Province, the paper established econometric model of industrial structure and the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in the analysis of the results obtained: the secondary industry is the leading cause of long-term increase in energy consumption which in turn is the driving force of the tertiary industry development. Finally, the relevant suggestions are made for industrial restructuring and for ensuring security of energy supply perspective.

This paper selects the panel data of 13 cities in Beijing Tianjin Hebei region from 2008 to 2016, and uses the fixed effect model to study the relationship between environmental regulation, industrial structure upgrading and economic growth in Beijing Tianjin Hebei region. The results show that: strengthening environmental regulation can promote the upgrading of industrial structure in Beijing Tianjin Hebei region by reducing the emission of pollutants; the upgrading of industrial structure is conducive to promoting the economic development of Beijing Tianjin Hebei region.

In order to explore the relationship between water consumption (WC) and economic growth (EG) in China, this paper introduced the concepts related with decoupling in the fields of resources and environmental research to define the decoupling EG from WC. Furthermore, the assessing approach was built up and a coefficient was proposed to estimate the decoupling degree. Afterwards, the relations between WC and EG from 1997 to 2008 were investigated. The results show strong decoupling of agricultural WC from GDP of primary industry and weak decoupling of WC from EG. It can be concluded that agricultural WC plays an important role to improve the decoupling degree between WC and EG.

Abstract In order to promote the economic development of the autonomous region, Inner Mongolia actively undertakes the industrial transfer in the eastern developed areas. In the process of promoting the economic development of Inner Mongolia, industrial transfer has also brought some environmental problems. In order to explore the relationship between industrial transfer, economic growth and the environment of Inner Mongolia, this paper selects the time series data of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region from 2001 to 2016, and conducts an empirical analysis by establishing an Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) model. The study found that industrial transfer has brought the economic growth and the upgrading of industrial structure to Inner Mongolia, but also brought about environmental problems. Therefore, this paper proposes that Inner Mongolia should increase investment in R&D, strengthen investment in environmental governance, and make full use of the advantages of geography, labor force and natural resources to achieve high-quality economic development and industrial structure optimization and upgrade.

The article provides an empirical test of the hypothesis of the influence of the level of economic development of the country on the level of development of its social capital based on panel data analysis. In this study, the Indices of Social Development elaborated by the International Institute of Social Studies under World Bank support are used as an indicators of social capital development as they best meet the requirements for complexity (include six integrated indicators of Civic Activism, Clubs and Associations, Intergroup Cohesion, Interpersonal Safety and Trust, Gender Equality, Inclusion of Minorities), comprehensiveness of measurement, sustainability. In order to provide an empirical analysis, we built a panel that includes data for 20 countries divided into four groups according to the level of economic development. The first G7 countries (France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom); the second group is the economically developed countries, EU members and Turkey, the third group is the new EU member states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania); to the fourth group – post-Soviet republics (Armenia, Georgia, Russian Federation, Ukraine). The analysis shows that the parameters of economic development of countries cannot be completely excluded from the determinants of social capital. Indicators show that the slowdown in economic growth leads to greater cohesion among people in communities, social control over the efficiency of distribution and use of funds, and enforcement of property rights. The level of tolerance to racial diversity and the likelihood of negative externalities will depend on the change in the rate of economic growth. Also, increasing the well-being of people will have a positive impact on the level of citizens’ personal safety, reducing the level of crime, increasing trust. Identification of local priorities within each potential sector and implementation of a targeted development policy would definitely accelerate rural economic growth. In this sense, it is useful to examine each region’s industrial structural evolution compared to the whole economy and aggregate industries. Shift-share analysis has been confirmed as a useful method to measure regional economic differences and analyze the contribution of industrial structure. This paper selects five representative counties in Heilongjiang province and applies shift-share decomposition to analyze the change in rural economic development from 2000 to 2018. The change of economic growth in each selected county is decomposed into three components: national growth effect, industrial structure effect, and competitive effect, taking the national level as the reference. The results showed the following: (1) the trend of rural economic growth fluctuated greatly for nearly 20 years, distinguished by a mismatch of industrial structure with competitiveness for the selected counties; rural economies with an inappropriate industrial structure did not experience strong growth, despite high competitive potential. (2) The low-end agricultural structure and secondary industry structure led to the loss of each competitive effect; the tertiary industry structure based on economic structure servitization was rational, but the competitive effect did not work out. (3) Finally, this paper provided differentiated suggestions in accordance with local resources and priorities of the selected counties, so as to avoid excessive convergence and the lack of characteristics in industrial structure in rural transformation.

The Chinese government has implemented a number of environmental policies to promote the continuous improvement of air quality while considering economic development. Scientific assessment of the impact of environmental policies on the relationship between air pollution and economic growth can provide a scientific basis for promoting the coordinated development of these two factors. This paper uses the Tapio decoupling theory to analyze the relationship between regional economic growth and air pollution in key regions of air pollution control in China—namely, the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region and surrounding areas (BTHS), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and the Pearl River Delta (PRD)—based on data of GDP and the concentrations of SO2, PM10, and NO2 for 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2019. The results show that the SO2, PM10, and NO2 pollution in the key regions show strong and weak decoupling. The findings additionally indicate that government policies have played a significant role in improving the decoupling between air pollution and economic development. The decoupling between economic growth and SO2 and PM10 pollution in the BTHS, YRD, and PRD is better than that in other regions, while the decoupling between economic growth and NO2 pollution has not improved significantly in these regions. To improve the relationship between economic growth and air pollution, we suggest that the governments of China and other developing countries should further optimize and adjust the structure of industry, energy, and transportation; apply more stringent targets and measures in areas of serious air pollution; and strengthen mobile vehicle pollution control.

In the developing economy, tourism is the most visible and steadiest growing facade. Tourism is considered one of the rapidly increasing elements for economic development from the last two decades. Therefore, the proposed study used vector autoregression (VAR) model, error correction model (ECM), and the Granger causality to check the relationship between the tourism industry and economic growth based on the data of the Beijing municipal bureau of statistics from 1994 to 2015. Gross domestic product (GDP) is used as a replacement variable for the economic growth index, while internal tourism revenue is used as a tourism industry indicator. The study supports the tourism-led growth hypothesis proposed in the existing literature in a different survey of tourism and economic development. The results show that there is a strong relationship in the tourism industry and economic growth in the context of Beijing, and at the same time, tourism creates a more significant increase in long run local real economic accomplishments. The results of the VAR model confirm that in the long run, Beijing’s economic growth is affected by domestic tourism, while the ECM model shows unidirectional results in the short term. Similarly, there is a one-way causal relationship between the tourism industry and economic growth in Beijing, China. The empirical results are in strong support of the concept that tourism causes growth.
