Comparison Of The Results

This paper examines shaft and base grouted concrete piles by conducting vertical static load tests (SLTs) and dynamic load tests. Three concrete piles with shaft and base grouting, with base grouting only, and without grouting techniques were selected, and compressive SLTs were conducted. Two piles with grouting were also assessed with dynamic load tests. Another two uplift SLTs were conducted to one shaft and base grouted pile and one pile without grouting. Traditional presentations were provided to check whether the bored piles reached the design requirement. Interpretations of test results were also provided to determine the ultimate pile capacity. Results from these 5 SLT programs indicated that double-tangent and DeBeer's methods are close to each other, and Chin's method overestimates the pile capacity. Comparison of the results from the SLTs and dynamic load tests shows that the results from Chin's method are close to dynamic results, and Mazurkiewicz's method overestimates for friction resistance. The results also demonstrate that base and shaft grouted pile and base grouted pile increase by 9.82% and 2.89% in compressive capacity, respectively, and compared to the uplift SLTs; there is a 15.7% increment in pile capacity after using base and shaft grouting technology.

The characteristic properties of limestone-shell rock used as foundation base, including shear resistance transformation into friction resistance, are described. The main provisions of the method for determining piles bearing capacity using limestone mechanical characteristics dependence on the tensile strength under uniaxial compression in Odessa region. The results of limestone-shell rock full-scale tests by bored piles are presented. Experimental values of piles bearing capacity are compared with the values obtained by calculation using different methods.

For friction piles depending on the friction resistance, accurate prediction of unit skin friction around the pile shaft is the dominant resistance to measure the final bearing capacity of a bored-pile. The present study measures the stress–strain transferring in two instrumented bored-piles (BP #1 & BP# 2) embedded within the soil layer in Kuala Lumpur by real-time monitoring global strain extensometer (GSE) sensors. Two bored-piles (i.e., having 1.80 m and 1.0 m diameters, as well as 36 m and 32 m lengths) have been loaded with two times to their design working loads. Extensive data are analyzed to measure the changes in stress–strain in the bored-pile. The effect of loading and unloading stages on the pile’s head and base settlement has been monitored, indicating that Young modulus of elasticity in concrete bored-pile ( E c ), average strain, and unit skin friction changed along the bored-pile based on the ground site conditions and stress registered. One example of two case studies with great real-time monitoring data has been provided to further design.

Field test data from three instrumented large diameter bored piles in Pattaya city of Thailand were analyzed to study the behavior of load transfer mechanism from the pile to soil. The pile load test data were obtained from conventional static load test. These bored piles used for conventional static load test have the same diameter of 0.80 m and different length in the range of 25 m to 32 m. Results from back-analysis found that the skin friction resistance, β, has the value between 0.20 and 0.64 and the bearing capacity at end of piles, Nq, which is in the range of 10 to150, is much lower than the theoretical values proposed by other researchers before.

Based on the experiment of frictional resistance between concrete short pile and lightly weathered silty mudstone, the frictional resistance of concrete short pile on uplift loading was analyzed and the ultimate friction resistance was obtained. Considering the site geotechnical investigation report and relative standards, the safety factor of side friction of uplift bored piles in soft rock was defined according to the testing of frictional resistance between concrete short pile and lightly weathered silty mudstone. Achievements in this research are already applied into engineering practice.
