Abstract This method for assay of polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) in large numbers of urine samples is based on preliminary analyte isolation by use of a Dowex 50W column, separation by high-voltage paper electrophoresis, reaction with ninhydrin to detect the separated amines, and subsequent direct assay with a dual-wave-length thin-layer chromatography scanner by the zigzag scanning method. By optimizing the conditions for the Dowex 50W column and high-voltage paper electrophoresis, putrescine, cadaverine, spermidine, and spermine were completely separated. The major technical improvements are room-temperature collection of urine with toluene, shorter hydrolysis time, complete separation of putrescine from cadaverine and histamine, and elimination of interference with spermine measurement. Polyamine concentrations as measured by this method agreed with those obtained by use of an amino acid analyzer. Reference intervals by this method were similar to those reported by Russell (Clin. Chem. 23: 22, 1977) with an automated amino acid analyzer. Putrescine, spermidine, and spermine excretion in urine from patients with blood cancers and solid cancers was significantly increased; information on concentrations of putrescine and spermidine were especially useful for following the clinical efficacy of cancer treatments.

A small electron probe has many applications in many fields and in the case of the STEM, the probe size essentially determines the ultimate resolution. However, there are many difficulties in obtaining a very small probe.Spherical aberration is one of them and all existing probe forming systems have non-zero spherical aberration. The ultimate probe radius is given byδ = 0.43Csl/4ƛ3/4where ƛ is the electron wave length and it is apparent that δ decreases only slowly with decreasing Cs. Scherzer pointed out that the third order aberration coefficient always has the same sign regardless of the field distribution, provided only that the fields have cylindrical symmetry, are independent of time and no space charge is present. To overcome this problem, he proposed a corrector consisting of octupoles and quadrupoles.

Finely focused beams extracted from liquid metal ion sources (LMIS) provide a wealth of secondary signals which can be exploited to create high resolution images by the scanning method. The images of scanning ion microscopy (SIM) encompass a variety of contrast mechanisms which we classify into two broad categories: a) Emission contrast and b) Analytical contrast.Emission contrast refers to those mechanisms inherent to the emission of secondaries by solids under ion bombardment. The contrast-carrying signals consist of ion-induced secondary electrons (ISE) and secondary ions (ISI). Both signals exhibit i) topographic emission contrast due to the existence of differential geometric emission and collection effects, ii) crystallographic emission contrast, due to primary ion channeling phenomena and differential oxidation of crystalline surfaces, iii) chemical emission or Z-contrast, related to the dependence of the secondary emission yields on the Z and surface chemical state of the target.

The imaging performance of the light optical lens systems has reached such a degree of perfection that nowadays numerical apertures of about 1 can be utilized. Compared to this state of development the objective lenses of electron microscopes are rather poor allowing at most usable apertures somewhat smaller than 10-2 . This severe shortcoming is due to the unavoidable axial chromatic and spherical aberration of rotationally symmetric electron lenses employed so far in all electron microscopes.The resolution of such electron microscopes can only be improved by increasing the accelerating voltage which shortens the electron wave length. Unfortunately, this procedure is rather ineffective because the achievable gain in resolution is only proportional to λ1/4 for a fixed magnetic field strength determined by the magnetic saturation of the pole pieces. Moreover, increasing the acceleration voltage results in deleterious knock-on processes and in extreme difficulties to stabilize the high voltage. Last not least the cost increase exponentially with voltage.

The three-dimensional (3D) model of erosion state of blast furnace (BF) hearth was obtained by using 3D laser scanning method. The thickness of refractory lining can be measured anywhere and the erosion curves were extracted both in the circumferential and height directions to analyze the erosion characteristics. The results show that the most eroded positions located below 20# tuyere with an elevation of 7700 mm and below 24#–25# tuyere with an elevation of 8100 mm, the residual thickness here is only 295 mm. In the circumferential directions, the serious eroded areas located between every two tapholes while the taphole areas were protected well by the bonding material. In the height directions, the severe erosion areas located between the elevation of 7600 mm to 8200 mm. According to the calculation, the minimum depth to ensure the deadman floats in the hearth is 2581 mm, corresponding to the elevation of 7619 mm. It can be considered that during the blast furnace production process, the deadman has been sinking to the bottom of BF hearth and the erosion areas gradually formed at the root of deadman.

Abstract The buckled wave length and the critical in-plane bending moment of laminated long composite strips of cord-reinforced rubber sheets on an elastic foundation is analyzed by Galerkin's method, with consideration of interlaminar shear deformation. An approximate formula for the wave length is given in terms of cord angle, elastic moduli of the constituent rubber and steel cord, and several structural dimensions. The calculated wave length for a 165SR13 automobile tire with steel breakers (belts) was very close to experimental results. An additional study was then conducted on the post-buckling behavior of a laminated biased composite beam on an elastic foundation. This beam is subjected to axial compression. The calculated relationship between the buckled wave rise and the compressive membrane force also agreed well with experimental results.
