Histological analysis of Ruta graveolens L. roots and in vitro grown cell suspensions revealed idioblasts with vacuoles containing clusters of droplets thought to be the storage compartment of acridone alkaloids. These idioblasts contained numerous vacuoles of varying sizes rather than the large, single, central vacuole characteristic of most adjacent parenchyma cells. The structure of idioblasts in roots and suspension cultures was identical. Treatment of suspension cultures with fungal elicitors known to increase alkaloid accumulation greatly did not affect the structure of idioblasts.

The dichloromethane extract of the stem bark of Teclea amaniensis has yielded two novel furoquinoline alkaloids, 5-[3-methylbut-2-enyl]-4,6,7-trimethoxyfuro[2,3- b]quinoline and 6-(2′,3′-epoxy-3-methylbutyl)-5-hydroxyl-4,7-dimethoxyfuro[2,3- b]quinoline, in addition to an acridone alkaloid, 2-hydroxy-1,3-dimethoxy-10-methylacridone. Three known alkaloids, dictamnine, kokusaginine and evoxanthine, and two known triterpenoids, lupeol and lupeol acetate were also isolated. Structures of the new compounds were established by means of NMR spectroscopic and MS data.

AbstractHydroxyrutacridone epoxide was isolated from roots and callus tissue cultures of Ruta graveolens L. and identified by spectroscopic methods by comparison to rutacridone epoxide.

The biosynthesis of some alkaloids of Glycosmis arborea (Roxb.) DC has been studied. Using labelled compounds it has been shown that the chinazolone-alkaloid arborine is derived from phenylalanine and anthranilic acid. After feeding anthranilic acid-T the isolated acridone-alkaloid arborinine was degradated to 1-methyl-4-chinolon-3-carboxylic acid. This compound had the same specific radioactivity as arborinine. So one might conclude anthranilic acid is a precursor of ring A of the acridine-alkaloids.Die Familie der Rutaceen umfaßt etwa 150 Genera, die vorwiegend in den Tropen und Subtropen verbreitet sind. In rund 40 Gattungen, besonders der Unterfamilien Rutoideae und Toddalioideae, sind bisher Alkaloide nachgewiesen worden. Die Alkaloide gehören den unterschiedlichsten Struktur-Typen an. Die am häufigsten vertretene Gruppe sind die Furochinoline. Das Vorkommen dieses Alkaloid-Types sowie der Acridine, Imidazol-Alkaloide und Indolochinazoline scheint auf die Rutaceen beschränkt zu sein.

A new acridone alkaloid, citropsine A (1), and thirteen known compounds (2 - 14) were isolated from the MeOH extract of the stem bark of Citropsis articulata. Structures of all compounds were determined by detailed analyses of their 1D and 2D NMR spectra, mass spectrometric data and by comparison with previously known analogs.
