Ferromagnetic coupling exists in an uneven chain-like copper(II) complex with both end-on azido and syn-syn carboxylato bridges, (Cu3(L)2(N3)4(H2O)3)n (1, HL = 6-hydroxynicotinic acid). It is the first example of one-dimensional (1D) chain-like copper(II) coordination polymer showing both metamagnetic behavior and long-range magnetic ordering (Tc = 6.7 K), thanks to the interchain hydrogen bonds, which make a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular array of the entire molecular structure and mediate the interchain antiferromagnetic interaction.

In this work, renormalization of effective mass of an electron due to small polaron formation is studied within the framework of Extended Holstein model. It is assumed that electron moves along one-dimensional chain of ions and interacts with ions vibrations of neighboring chain via long-range density–displacement type force. By means of exact calculations, renormalized mass of nonadiabatic small polaron is obtained at strong coupling limit. Obtained results compared with those of small polaron mass of ordinary Holstein model. An effect of ions vibrations polarization on small polaron mass is addressed.

Magnetism in low dimensions is a challenging problem for long time. As the dimensionality of the systems reduces, the fluctuations become more important and hence, the magnetic ordering tends to decrease. We find that one-dimensional monatomic chains of Co constructed on a Pt substrate exhibit long-range order below a threshold temperature in contrast to various theoretical results and expectations. The Co -chains have large localized orbital moment compared to that in the two-dimensional films and bulk Co . Therefore, the magnetic anisotropy energy is significantly large in this case. Thus, the observation of long-range ferromagnetic order in Co -chains may be attributed to the presence of anisotropy barriers due to the substrate.
