AbstractA novel hydrogel wound dressing with semi-interpenetrating polymer network structure (semi-IPN) was prepared by radical polymerization of acrylic acid with potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) as initiator and N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as cross-linking agent in the presence of chitosan (CTS) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). Hydrogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). SEM displayed semi- IPN hydrogels' creased surface with some scale-like wrinkles, thus improving the absorptive capability which has been considered as a most important characteristic of wound dressings. It was found that the content of cross-linking agent and the mass ratio of PVP and CTS had much influence on the mechanical properties of the hydrogel, varying from brittle plastics to elastomer due to the different degrees of cross linking. Since tensile strength is partly in inverse ratio to the hydrogel absorbent capability, the article offers an analysis of varying material proportion in order to obtain an optimum properties of the hydrogel wound dressing .

The synthesis and characterization of two new 1,3,5-triazines containing 2-(aminomethyl)-1H-benzimidazole hydrochloride as a substituent are reported, namely, 2-{[(4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino]methyl}-1H-benzimidazol-3-ium chloride, C11H9Cl2N6 +·Cl− (1), and bis(2,2′-{[(6-chloro-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)bis(azanediyl)]bis(methylene)}bis(1H-benzimidazol-3-ium)) tetrachloride heptahydrate, 2C19H18ClN9 2+·4Cl−·7H2O (2). Both salts were characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and IR spectroscopy. Moreover, the NMR (1H and 13C) spectra of 1 were obtained. Salts 1 and 2 have triclinic symmetry (space group P-1) and their supramolecular structures are stabilized by hydrogen bonding and offset π–π interactions. In hydrated salt 2, the noncovalent interactions yield pseudo-nanotubes filled with chloride anions and water molecules, which were modelled in the refinement with substitutional and positional disorder.

ABSTRACTFunctionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on single-crystal Si wafers have been used as substrates for the deposition of titania and vanadia thin films. The formation of a titanium chelate was used to stabilize an otherwise spontaneously precipitating aqueous titanium solution. Uniform titania films have been synthesized from Ti(O2)2+ in aqueous HCl solutions at 80°C on sulfonated SAMs. Vanadium oxide hydrate films, V2O5·0.7 H2O, have been directly formed from aqueous vanadate solutions on NH2-terminated SAMs at 45°C. In the as-deposited films, water molecules were intercalated between the vanadium oxide layers. Subsequent annealing at 350°C in air led to nanocrystalline V2O5.

Abstract The d 10 ions MII (M = Zn, Cd, Hg) and four equivalents of the neutral zwitterion trimethylglycine (betaine, bet) aggregate to discrete six-coordinated cationic complexes. With nitrate as counter anions, solids of the composition [M(bet)4](NO3)2·H2O are obtained. Their structural characterization reveals close relationship: they crystallize in metrically similar unit cells adopting three different subgroups of a hypothetical aristotype. In all cases, the divalent cations exhibit a strongly distorted coordination sphere in which two betaine ligands bind with both carboxylato O atoms and the other two with only one oxygen to the cation. Non-coordinating O atoms of different betaine ligands act as hydrogen bond acceptors towards co-crystallized water molecules. At least for the Pearson-soft HgII cations, this coordination is unexpected: to the best of our knowledge, HgII complexes with four carboxylato ligands have not yet been characterized. Without the necessity for charge balancing, the composition of zwitterion complexes is dominated by steric requirements and possibly by competition with alternative dipole molecules such as solvent water.
