Tetranuclear hetero-metal MnIII2NiII2 complexes, [Mn2Ni2(L)4(OAc)2] (1) and [Mn2Ni2(L)4(NO3)2] (2) [H2L = N-(2-hydroxymethylphenyl)-5,6-benzosalicylideneimine], have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystal structure analyses, infrared spectra, and elemental analyses. The structure analyses revealed that the complexes have a defective double-cubane metal core connected by μ3-alkoxo bridges. Complexes consist of two bis-μ-alkoxo bridged MnIIINiII heteronuclear units making a dimer-of-dimers structure. The double-cubane cores are significantly distorted due to an effect of syn–syn mode acetato or nitrato bridges. Magnetic measurements indicate that weak antiferromagnetic interactions (Mn-Ni = −0.66 ~ −4.19 cm–1) are dominant in the hetero-metal core.

Fe–N thin films were deposited on glass substrates by dc magnetron sputtering under various Ar∕N2 discharge conditions. Crystal structures and elemental compositions of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Magnetic properties of the films were measured using a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. Films deposited at different N2∕(Ar+N2) flow ratios were found to have different crystal structures and different nitrogen contents. When the flow ratios were 60%, 50%, and 30%, a nonmagnetic single-phase FeN was formed in the films. At the flow ratio of 10%, two crystal phases of γ′-Fe4N and ε-Fe3N were detected. When the flow ratio reduced to 5%, a mixture of α-Fe, ε-Fe3N, FeN0.056, and α″-Fe16N2 phases was obtained. The value of saturation magnetization for the mixture was found to be larger than that of pure Fe.

The trinuclear cyanide-bridged heterometallic Pd(II)–Mn(III) complexes {[Mn(L1)(H2O)]2[Pd(CN)4]} and {[Mn(L2)(H2O)]2[Pd(CN)4]}·2H2O (L1 = N,N‘-1,2-propylene-bis(3-methoxysalicylideneiminate; L2 = N,N′-1,2-propylene-bis(3-ethoxysalicylideneiminate) were obtained and structurally and magnetically characterised. X-ray diffraction revealed their cyanide-bridged trinuclear core nature with a conformational difference. The magnetic susceptibilities of the two complexes revealed overall weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the adjacent Mn(III) ions.
