1. In tethered flight in a wind tunnel fruit-flies adjust lift and thrust by shifting the horizontal component of the lower extreme wing position. The upper extreme wing position is nearly constant. 2. Stroke angle and stroke plane are fully interdependent parameters. 3. Angle of attack varies along the length of the wing; no length-wise twisting occurs. 4. Angle of attack varies with flying speed; pitch is unchanged as speed is increased. 5. These characteristics suggest that the flight machinery of fruit-flies is considerably simpler than that of larger flying animals.

On the basis of javelin wind tunnel experiment, we established mathematical model of javelin flight to conduct a computer optimization and got the conclusions. When the initial velocity is in the range of 25m/s-30m/s, the best throwing condition is: the throwing angle is 40°, the angle of attack is 11°. The javelin throwing condition is not zero angle of attack was necessary and sufficient for obtained aerodynamic efficiency.

Abstract. The aerodynamic characteristics of DTU-LN221 airfoil is studied. ANSYS Fluent is used to simulate the airfoil performance with seven different turbulence models. The simulation results for the airfoil with different turbulence models are compared with the wind tunnel experimental data performed under the same operating conditions. It is found that there is a good agreement between the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predicted aerodynamic force coefficients with wind tunnel experimental data especially with angle of attack between −5° to 10°. RSM is chosen to investigate the flow field structure and the surface pressure coefficients under different angle of attack between −5° to 10°. Also the effect of changing air temperature, velocity and turbulence intensity on lift and drag coefficients/forces are examined. The results show that it is recommended to operate the wind turbines airfoil at low air temperature and high velocity to enhance the performance of the wind turbines.

This paper presents the design and wind tunnel testing of a morphing camber system and an estimation of performances on an unmanned aerial vehicle. The morphing camber system is a combination of two subsystems: the morphing trailing edge and the morphing leading edge. Results of the present study show that the aerodynamics effects of the two subsystems are combined, without interfering with each other on the wing. The morphing camber system acts only on the lift coefficient at a 0° angle of attack when morphing the trailing edge, and only on the stall angle when morphing the leading edge. The behavior of the aerodynamics performances from the MTE and the MLE should allow individual control of the morphing camber trailing and leading edges. The estimation of the performances of the morphing camber on an unmanned aerial vehicle indicates that the morphing of the camber allows a drag reduction. This result is due to the smaller angle of attack needed for an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with the morphing camber system than an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with classical aileron. In the case study, the morphing camber system was found to allow a reduction of the drag when the lift coefficient was higher than 0.48.

In the paper, numerical and experimental study of low Reynolds number airflow around the deformable membrane airfoil (DMA) is presented. Simulations of a fluid-structure interaction between the fluid and the DMA were performed. In the experiment, the DMA model was made from a thin PVC sheet, which was wrapped around the steel rod at the leading and trailing edge. Measurements were performed in a wind tunnel at a chord Reynolds number of 85.7·103, over the angle of attack range from 0° to 15° and DMA shortening ratio from 0.025 to 0.150. Simulations were in an agreement with the experiment, since the average relative difference of coefficient of lift was smaller than 7.3%. For the same value of Reynolds number, DMA shows improved lift coefficient Cy= 2.18, compared to standard rigid airfoils.

This paper is primarily concentrated with determining aerodynamic characteristics and choosing the best angle of attack at a maximum lift and low drag for the FX 63-137 aerofoil at a low Reynolds number and a speed of 20m/s and 30m/s, by using subsonic wind tunnel through manufacturing the aerofoil by aluminum alloy using a CNC machine. The proposed methodology is divided into several stages. Firstly, manufacturing the aerofoil using an aluminum alloy. Secondly, the testing process is carried out using subsonic wind tunnel. Thirdly, the results are displayed and compared with results produced from related works, in order to find out the best angle of attack at a maximum lift.

This article presents a new fan testing concept which was developed by the University of Braunschweig. The aim of the concept is to provide an experimental setup for integrated jet engine fan investigations. This integrated setup includes a full bypass model with nacelle geometry in order to obtain all aerodynamic interaction effects. Since these interactions have a strong dependency from fan inlet conditions the facility provides wind tunnel capacities. Generating both uniform and angle of attack inlet conditions it is possible to investigate fan performance during the most critical operating points of a civil flight mission. The main innovation of the wind tunnel is the crosswind concept for generating angle of attack conditions in case of a non-pitchable fan unit. Numerical investigations in this paper are intended to validate this new concept by means of typical angle of attack simulations. The results show that the crosswind concept is able to generate equivalent cp-characteristics as obtained for the reference simulations at the nacelle 6 o‘clock and 12 o‘clock positions.
