The state of Rio Grande do Sul is one of the greatest Brazilian soybean producers, which justifies the use of remote sensing techniques for monitoring areas occupied by this crop. The purpose of this work was to characterize throughout the crop cycle the variability of spectral responses of soybean leaflets, subjected to different conditions of soil tillage and water supply. The experiment was carried out in a 0.5 ha area, located in Eldorado do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, in two systems of soil tillage (no-tillage and conventional tillage) and two levels of water supply (irrigated and non-irrigated). The cultivar Fepagro RS-10 was sown in a row spacing of 0.40 m and in a population of 400,000 plants per hectare. An integrating sphere of a spectroradiometer LI-COR, model LI-1800 was used for measuring the absorbance, reflectance, transmittance on soybean leaflets. The results showed that the pattern of the incident radiation partitioning in the reflectance, transmittance and absorbance components is influenced by the crop phenological stage and by the tillage system. Despite this, there is stability on the reflectance of soybean leaflets in the red and infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, throughout the crop cycle. The inversely proportional relation between absorbance and reflectance of soybean leaflets revealed viability on the reflectance data, in monitoring of agricultural crops.

A series of tripeptides TrpTrpPhe (1), TrpTrpTyr (2), and TrpTrpTyr[CH2N(CH3)2] (3) were synthesized, and their photophysical properties and non-covalent binding to polynucleotides were investigated. Fluorescent Trp residues (quantum yield in aqueous solvent ΦF = 0.03–0.06), allowed for the fluorometric study of non-covalent binding to DNA and RNA. Moreover, high and similar affinities of 2×HCl and 3×HCl to all studied double stranded (ds)-polynucleotides were found (logKa = 6.0–6.8). However, the fluorescence spectral responses were strongly dependent on base pair composition: the GC-containing polynucleotides efficiently quenched Trp emission, at variance to AT- or AU-polynucleotides, which induced bisignate response. Namely, addition of AT(U) polynucleotides at excess over studied peptide induced the quenching (attributed to aggregation in the grooves of polynucleotides), whereas at excess of DNA/RNA over peptide the fluorescence increase of Trp was observed. The thermal denaturation and circular dichroism (CD) experiments supported peptides binding within the grooves of polynucleotides. The photogenerated quinone methide (QM) reacts with nucleophiles giving adducts, as demonstrated by the photomethanolysis (quantum yield ΦR = 0.11–0.13). Furthermore, we have demonstrated photoalkylation of AT oligonucleotides by QM, at variance to previous reports describing the highest reactivity of QMs with the GC reach regions of polynucleotides. Our investigations show a proof of principle that QM precursor can be imbedded into a peptide and used as a photochemical switch to enable alkylation of polynucleotides, enabling further applications in chemistry and biology.

AbstractPhotonic network-on-chip for high-performance multi-core processors has attracted substantial interest in recent years as it offers a systematic method to meet the demand of large bandwidth, low latency and low power dissipation. In this paper we demonstrate a non-blocking six-port optical switch for cluster-mesh photonic network-on-chip. The architecture is constructed by substituting three optical switching units of typical Spanke-Benes network to optical waveguide crossings. Compared with Spanke-Benes network, the number of optical switching units is reduced by 20%, while the connectivity of routing path is maintained. By this way the footprint and power consumption can be reduced at the expense of sacrificing the network latency performance in some cases. The device is realized by 12 thermally tuned silicon Mach-Zehnder optical switching units. Its theoretical spectral responses are evaluated by establishing a numerical model. The experimental spectral responses are also characterized, which indicates that the optical signal-to-noise ratios of the optical switch are larger than 13.5 dB in the wavelength range from 1525 nm to 1565 nm. Data transmission experiment with the data rate of 32 Gbps is implemented for each optical link.
