By means of a variety of ingenious experiments it has been shown that the pronephric duct originates anteriorly and grows caudally to join the cloaca (for review, see Burns, 1955). It has been concluded on the basis of histological study (Lillie, 1919), and from operative experiments in which the pronephric duct path was blocked by grafts (Waddington, 1938), that in the chick the pronephric duct extends posteriorly by proliferation of its own cells. In the present study, the proliferative pattern in the outgrowing duct of the chick has been examined in normal and in colchicine-treated embryos. Results indicate that proliferation is particularly marked towards the posterior duct tip. It was also noted that tensions of the blastoderm (see Spratt, 1956) which are disrupted by colchicine treatment appear to play some part in maintenance of normal diameter and posterior elongation of the duct.

Deep cervical fascia forms a connective tissue sheath around the thyroid gland. Delicate trabeculae and septa penetrate the gland indistinctly dividing the gland into lobes and lobules which in turn composed of follicles.1,2,3 These follicles are structural units of thyroid gland which varies greatly in size and shape.4 The number of follicles varies in different age groups. The study was carried out to see the percentage of area occupied by follicles in the stained section of thyroid glands in different age groups. The collected samples were grouped as A (3.5 – 20yrs), B (21- 40yrs) & C (41 – 78yrs). Percentage of area occupied by follicles was (58.55±10.72) in group A, (63.79±12.35) in group B + (63.39±8.29) in group C.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/updcj.v1i2.13981 Update Dent. ABSTRACT A new method for preparation of Human Menopausal Gonadotrophin involves successively alcoholic precipitation, kaolin adsorption and chromatography on ion exchangers. A highly active material is obtained which corresponds to 1 mg per litre of urine and has an activity of 1 mouse uterus unit at a dose of 0.003 mg. This gonadotrophin possesses both follicle stimulating and luteinizing activities in hypophysectomized female rats, by histological study. It contains 13 % hexose, 10% hexosamine and 8.5 % sialic acid. A further purification, by zone electrophoresis on starch, gives a final product, biologically active at 0.001 mg, which behaves as an homogenous substance in free electrophoresis with mobility −4.76 × 10−5 at pH 8.6.
