The gene matted (symbol ma) reported by Searle & Spearman (1957) causes the body-hair of affected mice to be brittle and inflexible; this results in longitudinal splitting and breaking due to friction against the cage and other objects. In the present paper the keratin abnormality of the hair is studied. The defect in matted hairs is compared with that of Naked (N/ +) mice (Grüneberg, 1952), and the hair-cycle in matted mice is described. Keratins probably vary widely in composition, but attempts to study their chemistry have been only partially successful (Bach, 1952; Neurath & Bailey, 1954; Rothman, 1954). All keratins are rich in cystine, and it has been shown that oxidation of thiol SH groups to cystine S—S occurs during keratinization (Giroud & Bulliard, 1930; Hardy, 1952). The strength of keratin depends largely upon cystine linkages (Goddard & Michaelis, 1934), hydrogen bonds (Alexander, 1951), and polar (salt) linkages (Speakman & Townsend, 1938); these unite the long polypeptide fibre molecules.

AbstractThe capillary network of the kidney glomerulus filters small molecules from the blood. The glomerular 3D structure should help to understand its function, but it is poorly characterized. We therefore devised a new approach in which an automated tape collecting microtome (ATUM) was used to collect 0.5 μm thick serial sections from fixed mouse kidneys. The sections were imaged by scanning electron microscopy at ~ 50 nm/pixel resolution. With this approach, 12 glomeruli were reconstructed at an x–y–z resolution ~ 10 × higher than that of paraffin sections. We found a previously undescribed no-cross zone between afferent and efferent branches on the vascular pole side; connections here would allow blood to exit without being adequately filtered. The capillary diameters throughout the glomerulus appeared to correspond with the amount of blood flow within them. The shortest path (minimum number of branches to travel from afferent to efferent arterioles) is relatively independent of glomerular size and is present primarily on the vascular pole size. This suggests that new branches and longer paths form on the urinary pole side. Network analysis indicates that the glomerular network does not form by repetitive longitudinal splitting of capillaries. Thus the 3D structure of the glomerular capillary network provides useful information with which to understand glomerular function. Other tissue structures in the body may benefit from this new three dimensional approach.


A number of facts relating to proteins suggest that the polypeptides in native protein are in a folded state (Astbury 1933, 1934; Astbury and Street 1930, 1931; Pryde 1931; Wrinch 1936 a , b , c , 1937 a ; Langmuir, Schaefer and Wrinch 1937). The type of folding must be such as to imply the possibility of the regular and orderly arrangement of hundreds 01 amino-acid residues which to some extent at least is independent of the particular residues in question. We propose therefore to formulate all types of folding which are geometrically possible. Each hypothesis in turn can then be tested in two ways. We may consider its plausibility in itself: and having developed its implications to the farthest possible point, we may test it against known facts by ad hoc experiments. At present two types of folding have been suggested—by means of cyclol links (Wrinch 1936 a , b , c , 1937 a ; Langmuir, Schaefer and Wrinch 1937; Astbury 1936 a , b , c ; Frank, 1936) and by means of hydrogen bonds (Jordan Lloyd 1932; Jordan Lloyd and Marriott 1933; Mirsky and Pauling 1936; Wrinch and Jordan Lloyd 1936). The search for other types of folding is being continued. So far it has not proved possible to discard either theory on the grounds that the type of link postulated is out of the question. It is there­ fore very desirable to test these theories by means of their implications. Accordingly, on this occasion we consider (Wrinch 1937 b , c ) whether the cyclol theory can stand the test of the body of facts relating to the “globular” proteins, established by Svedberg and his collaborators (Svedberg and others 1929, 1930 a , b , 1934 a , b , 1935).

The chemicals were administered, subcutaneously, orally or topically. Generally, the depilation produced in the mice by mimosine or cyclophosphamide differed from that produced by the steroid analogues tested. In the first 2 cases almost completely naked mice were commonly seen, while in the steroid-treated groups the complete inhibition of all hair fibres was rare. This is discussed in relation to the effects of the same compounds on wool growth in sheep. When related to body weight, the doses of cyclophosphamide (62 mg/kg0.75) and dexamethasone (5-10 mg/kg0.75), that depilated mice in our experiments were in good agreement with those reported to inhibit the growth of wool fibres in some sheep. An example of synergism in depilatory effect between dexamethasone and cyclophosphamide is also presented. The time of onset and the initial spread over the body of the 2nd hair cycle in depilated mice was observed.

Relevance. Everyday contact of the population with surfactants (SAS) in drinking water poses the problem of timely and prompt substantiation of pre-nosological highly sensitive indicators of early manifestations of biological activity of detergents and operational control over the health of the population and the environment. But today the mechanisms of biotransformation, toxicodynamics, toxicokinetics, and metabolic processes that underlie the formation of structural and metabolic disorders when exposed to a surfactant, taking into account possible long-term effects, have not yet been fully elucidated. Objective: to investigate the effect of nitrogen-containing surfactants on redox processes in the body of experimental animals. Materials and methods. The experiments were carried out on 620, and acute experiments on 128 white rats (weight 180-220 g). We used four ionic nitrogen-containing surfactants with specified technical and physicochemical characteristics: FOM 9, FOM 9-4, FOM 9-12, and FOM 9-20. Doses were chosen so as to determine the lethal effect in the lethal dose (LD) range from 0 to 100. The LD50 was calculated. The substances were introduced into the stomach in pure form using a metal probe. The animals were observed for up to 15 days. The time of death of the animals and the total amount of the introduced substance was recorded. The animals were subjected to postmortem examination. Redox processes were qualitatively assessed by the activity of enzymes: cholinesterase, cerulose plasmin, lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase, peroxidase, catalase, cytochrome oxidase, by the content of SH-groups in the blood, by the concentration of biogenic monoamines. Results. Nitrogen-containing surfactants caused a change in peroxidase activity both upwards and downwards. In all cases, 1/1000 LD50 was inactive. On the 15th day of the experiment, neonol FOM 9-12 reduced the activity of the enzyme, and other substances did not affect it. By the end of the subacute experiment, neonol FOM 9-4 and neonol FOM 9-12 were reduced, and neonol FOM 9-20 increased peroxidase activity. A similar effect was on the activity of catalase: in all groups, except 1/1000 LD50, on day 30 there was a decrease in its activity. Cholinesterase activity increased. For the content of SH-groups in the blood on the 15th day, there was a tendency to decrease, which turned into significant differences on the 30th day in 1/10 LD50. The effect of 1/100 and 1/1000 LD50 did not violate the content of SH-blood groups. A similar effect was on the content of glutathione in the blood. In a subacute experiment, in groups, 1/10 and 1/100 LD50, the content of norepinephrine, tryptophan, serotonin in the liver increased and DOPA and dopamine decreased. The dynamics of adrenaline did not change. The content of dopamine and norepinephrine increased to a lesser extent in the brain; DOPA and adrenaline did not differ from the control; tryptophan increased only under the influence of FOM-9. 1/1000 LD50 did not affect the dynamics of the content of biogenic monoamines. The tested drugs have a similar effect on the body. Conclusions. A more toxic substance in a subacute experiment is FOM-9. The severity of violations in the dynamics of monitoring the activity of enzymes has a close dose-dependence. The effective dose is set at 1/10, the threshold – 1/100, and the inactive – 1/1000 LD50. Common features of the biological action of nitrogen-containing surfactants are the violation of redox processes, bioenergy, oxidative phosphorylation, which under appropriate conditions lead to the pathology of vital organs, functions, and systems of the body.

1. A new hereditary defect affecting the hair coat of Swiss albino mice is described. The defect was found to be inherited as a recessive character and is designated as bare (ba).2. The gene affected the vibrissae as well as pelage hairs. The lack of vibrissae and other sensory hairs at birth, helped to differentiate them easily from the normal animals. The first hairs on the body appeared at 13–14 days of age. The hairs were thin and tiny and remained there till about the thirtieth day. The hairs in the second hair cycle appeared at about 45 days, and again disappeared within 10 days. The animals were entirely naked when they were 6 months old.3. Gross as well as microscopic examination of hairs in the first hair cycle did not show the four different normal types of hairs. The hairs were comparatively very small, thin, and the internal structure did not show any regularity in the arrangement of the air cells.4. No difference was found in the number of hair follicles in the bare and the normal Swiss mice.5. Histology revealed the presence of keratinized globular masses instead of straight hair. This abnormality persisted in all the hair cycles.6. The bare mice were compared with the other mutants and placed in the Alopecia-Naked group where the abnormality was in the keratinization of the hair.

Many researchers in the field of bioethics agree that Confucianism impedes the modern notion of organ donation due to its position on “filial piety” (xiao) in terms of “not damaging one’s body.” The Confucian concept of xiao demands that children obey their parents, serve them diligently, bury them respectfully and worship them afterward. It also proclaims that a person’s body, hair and skin are gifts from their parents that cannot be damaged.This essay intends to show that such an interpretation of the Confucian concept of xiao is misleading because it is based on a misreading of an important statement from the Xiaojing (Classic of Filial Piety). According to some exegeses, the idea of “damage” in the original text should be understood as “damage via criminal punishment” instead of a general kind of “damage.” The author contends that it is equally problematic for people to consider keeping one’s body intact as a supreme principle in Confucian moral teachings. Although filial piety is a key principle in Confucianism, it is not the primary factor holding back organ donation. Although traditional Confucian principles emphasize the “wholeness of the body,” they do not prevent many Confucian scholars from taking different views, as Confucius claims that “the man of humaneness (ren) is one who, desiring to sustain himself, sustains others.” This essay concludes that a new interpretation of the Confucian text and its meaning would help to encourage more people to volunteer as organ donors.DOWNLOAD HISTORY | This article has been downloaded 2088 times in Digital Commons before migrating into this platform.

Physiological parameters of l-cysteine intake into the organism of white rats in the amount of 5 and 10 g/kg of feed were studied. As a result of the studies the negative effects of the drug on the body of animals was not observed. Weight gain and increase of efficiency indicate an increase in the physical strength of the body of animals. An increase in the serum content of total SH-groups indicates the antioxidant properties of the drug.

AbstractFrom the late nineteenth century onwards, a new range of European and American technologies, powered by electricity and gas, and intended for use on the body and in the home—especially appliances for the domestic kitchen—began to appear in Manila. Electro-mechanical vibratory devices and steam-powered massagers for the body; hair waving and curling machines; and a multitude of technologies for the domestic kitchen, from stoves and water heaters to a gamut of electric and gas gadgetry that included percolators, boilers, electric waffle-irons, grills, and refrigerators (or ice-boxes, their precursor) were targeted largely at the affluent female consumer with promises to improve her physical appearance and health or make her daily life more comfortable. Their introduction and impact in the Philippines can tell a number of compelling stories—the desirability of European or American bourgeois culture, how the trappings of Western lifestyles were imagined, the extent to which the use and purchase of certain technologies aimed at replicating or emulating those lifestyles, or, as this paper explores, the gendered technological infrastructure of the ‘good life’. In this story, modern technologies designed for domestic settings and for use on women's bodies made manifest a myriad of desires and aspirations—prestige, status, cosmopolitanism, modernity, and urbanity. They also articulated a particular sensuousness and pleasure. Electro-vibratory devices, hair styling machines, and kitchen appliances could be experienced by all the senses and thus exerted a visceral appeal; their use proclaimed an enthusiasm for modern technology which, for the first time, emphasized the relevance of modern technology to women's everyday lives by the transformative effects they promised.
