When Hydra oligactis is excised below the tentacles and incubated for a short time in concentrations of colchicine that inhibit spindle formation in dividing cells, a peduncle and basal disc subsequently form at the cut distal end, where hypostome and tentacles normally form (Corff & Burnett, 1969). Since recent reports suggest a similarity in the action of colchicine and low temperature, in this study the effects of low temperatures on regenerating hydra were investigated. High hydrostatic pressure and low temperature have been shown to act synergistically with colchicine to inhibit the first mitotic division in sea urchin eggs (Marsland, 1968). Colchicine and cooling have also been shown to cause disintegration of the microtubule system in Actinosphaerium (Tilney, 1965). We have previously discussed peduncle and basal disc formation at the distal end in terms of colchicine inhibition of cell division and the possible action of colchicine on the nervous system (Corff & Burnett, 1969).

1. A period of 11 days between tidemarks or below tidemarks entrains a persistent tidal rhythm in Carcinus. Two days exposure is effective between tidemarks but much less so below. 2. Laboratory temperature cycles of tidal periodicity for 5 days will impose a persistent rhythm on crabs kept moist in air when the temperature differential is 11° C but not when it is 4° C. A 4° C differential is effective if crabs are immersed in sea water at the low temperature parts of the cycle. 3. A combination of tidal variables therefore appears to act as synchronizers for the locomotor rhythm and, though not investigated, it is suggested that hydrostatic pressure change is another possible synchronizer. 4. Eyestalkless crabs show increased activity at high temperatures and decreased activity at low temperatures. These responses are the reverse of those occurring in normal crabs and are consistent with the view that eyestalks are the site of an inhibitory neuroendocrine mechanism.

Cambial strueture and aetivity of Streblus asper Lour. vary with the loeal c1imate. The eells start swelling eady in May prior to the onset of peric1inal divisions whieh are most frequent in September. The cell division stops in Oetober indieating the approach of dormaney. During the growth season, initiation as well as eessation of the xylem produetion preeedes that of phloem. High temperatures induee the eambial reaetivation. Onee initiated, the aetivity eontinues at relatively low temperatures. Hot and moderately humid eonditions in June favour xylogenesis whereas phloem differentiation begins at relatively low temperature and high humidity in July. The eoneurrent differentiation of xylem and phloem has its peak in August-September. The size and relative proportion of eambial initials change with the season. Fusiform initials are shorter and broader during the rainy season (July-September) than during the rest of the year. Tetraseriate rays and tall rays outnumber the other types of rays throughout the year.

Experiments have been carried out on the 3 MeV electron microscope in Toulouse. The low temperature straining holder has been previously described Images given by an image intensifier are recorded on magnetic tape.The microtensile niobium samples are cut in a plane with the two operative slip directions [111] and lying in the foil plane. The tensile axis is near [011].Our results concern:- The transition temperature of niobium near 220 K: at this temperature and below an increasing difference appears between the mobilities of the screw and edge portions of dislocations loops. Source operation and interactions between screw dislocations of different slip system have been recorded.

Highly polyploid somatic nucleus (macronucleus) of ciliate Bursaria truncatella under goes severe changes in morphology during cell division. At first, macronucleus (Ma) condences, diminishes in size and turns perpendicular to longitudinal axis of the cell. After short time, Ma turns again, elongates and only afterwards the process of division itself occurs. The biological meaning of these phenomena is not clear.Localization of RNA in the cells was performed on sections of ciliates B. truncatella, embedded in “Lowicryl K4M” at various stages: (1) before cell division (Figs. 2,3); (11) at the stage of macronucleus condensation; (111) during elongation of Ma (Fig.4); (1111) in young cells (0-5min. after division). For cytochemical labelling we used RNaseAcolloidal gold complexes (RNase-Au), which are known to bind to RNA containing cell ularstructures with high specificity. The influence of different parameters on the reliability and reproducibility of labelling was studied. In addition to the factors, discussed elsewhere, we found that the balance of mono- and bivalent cations is of great significance.

Cryoinjuries are almost inevitable during the freezing of embryos. The present study examines the possibility of using high hydrostatic pressure to reduce substantially the freezing point of the embryo-holding solution, in order to preserve embryos at subzero temperatures, thus avoiding all the disadvantages of freezing. The pressure of 210 MPa lowers the phase transition temperature of water to -21°C. According to the results of this study, embryos can survive in high hydrostatic pressure environment at room temperature; the time embryos spend under pressure without significant loss in their survival could be lengthened by gradual decompression. Pressurisation at 0°C significantly reduced the survival capacity of the embryos; gradual decompression had no beneficial effect on survival at that stage. Based on the findings, the use of the phenomena is not applicable in this form, since pressure and low temperature together proved to be lethal to the embryos in these experiments. The application of hydrostatic pressure in embryo cryopreservation requires more detailed research, although the experience gained in this study can be applied usefully in different circumstances.

The synthetic halogenated pyrimidine analog, 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU), is a marker of DNA synthesis. This exogenous nucleoside has generated important insights into the cellular mechanisms of the central nervous system development in a variety of animals including insects, birds, and mammals. Despite this, the detrimental effects of the incorporation of BrdU into DNA on proliferation and viability of different types of cells has been frequently neglected. This review will summarize and present the effects of a pulse of BrdU, at doses ranging from 25 to 300 µg/g, or repeated injections. The latter, following the method of the progressively delayed labeling comprehensive procedure. The prenatal and perinatal development of the cerebellum are studied. These current data have implications for the interpretation of the results obtained by this marker as an index of the generation, migration, and settled pattern of neurons in the developing central nervous system. Caution should be exercised when interpreting the results obtained using BrdU. This is particularly important when high or repeated doses of this agent are injected. I hope that this review sheds light on the effects of this toxic maker. It may be used as a reference for toxicologists and neurobiologists given the broad use of 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine to label dividing cells.

N-methyl-N-allylpyrrolidinium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (PYR1ATFSI) with substantial supercooling behavior is synthesized to develop low temperature electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries. Additive fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) in LiTFSI/PYR1ATFSI/EC/PC/EMC is found that it can reduce the freezing point. LiFePO4/Li coin cells with the FEC-PYR1ATFSI electrolyte exhibit good capacity retention, reversible cycling behavior at low temperatures. The good performance can be attributed to the decrease in the freezing point and the polarization of the composite electrolyte.

The low-temperature fluorescence spectrum of purified vapour-grown anthracene single crystals is presented and the free-exciton emission distinguished from a number of defect or impurity bands present even in the purest crystals. In assigning the observed bands the symmetry of the active vibrations and the origin of background fluorescence and deformation bands are discussed. The phonon structure in the region of the fluorescence origin was found to be almost completely b-polarized. Emission of electronic origin (25103 cm-1) was too weak to be observed. Polarization ratios of the principal vibronio bands at 5.6 K are given.
