Analysis of Long-Term Plan for Energy Supply System for Latvia that is 100% Based on the Use of Local Energy Resources The prices of fossil energy resources are expected to rise substantially in the future, therefore fossil energy resources might not be a feasible energy source for Latvia in the long term. The establishment of a fully self-sufficient energy supply system will require a significant transformation of the existing energy supply and transport infrastructure. Early planning of such a system makes it possible to shape development of the existing energy system in order to achieve that goal of a fully self-sufficient energy supply system. The paper shows a potential solution to establish an energy and transport system solely based on the domestic primary resources by the year 2050.

The economic and environmental benefits of using local energy resources for the heat supply of remote settlements are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the problem of energy supply of the Baikal tourist and recreational zone, in which environmental restrictions have a significant influence on decision-making. The results of the research of the energy plantations functioning for the fuel supply of remote settlements on the basis of application the economic-mathematical model for their analysis and optimization are presented in the paper. The problem of choosing the optimal combination of energy plantations, and imported and local fuel is discussed. The influence of the volume of the fuel demand, the prices of the long-range fuel, the transport factor on the economic efficiency depending on the configuration and the required area of the energy plantation is considered. The options to increase the efficiency of heat supply for small and medium-sized settlements in the Baikal region are analyzed.

The principles according to which the acidic properties of fulvic acid solutions should be compared are demonstrated. An equilibrium function defined and measured for any mixture, including fulvic acid functional groups, will be a weighted average. A concentration change will generally affect this average by changing the relative values of the statistical weights. Concentration corrections are therefore required for the comparison of two fulvic acid solutions. A Chernozem Ah fulvic acid and the previously described Armadale fulvic acid Batch FA1 were examined in this way. They were found to have the same general chemical characteristics, but with somewhat different numerical values. The implications of these results for the definition of fulvic acid are considered.

Abstract The reddish-violet heartwood of Juniperus virginiana L. contains irregularly distributed and longitudinally oriented streaks of light-coloured wood, described as “included sapwood”. A histological study revealed that a blockage of the rays, which is caused by wounds often associated with tiny shakes, branch stubs and included bark, may lead to this anomaly. A study of fresh wood immediately after felling of the trees showed that “included sapwood” lacks physiological activity similar to the adjacent normal heartwood. Cellular UV-spectroscopic analysis revealed a secondary metabolism particularly of phenolic compounds in the pit membranes of tracheids during “included sapwood” formation, whereas the reddish-violet flavonoid compounds do not develop in this anomalous wood. Chemical analyses of petrol ether, diethyl ether, acetone and ethanol/water extracts of sapwood, “included sapwood” and heartwood showed that the accessory compounds cedrol, α-cedrene, widdrol, thujopsene and cuparene increased in “included sapwood” compared to sapwood. As opposed to the reddish-violet heartwood compounds, these sesquiterpenes turned out to be highly toxic against a brown-rot fungus in a bioassay. These findings justify defining “included sapwood” as a heartwood anomaly, since the important wood characteristics of this tissue obey the definition of heartwood rather than sapwood. This anomaly should no longer be a reason to exclude this type of wood from commercial utilisation.
