Adaptation of apt chemical modifications and incorporation of suitable additives, especially, nano-additives, could improve the properties of bio-lubricants derived from palm oil. This makes it one of the best alternatives to mineral oil lubricants. Possible chemical modifications are hydrogenation, esterification/ transesterification, epoxidation and metathesis. Feasible additives and nano-additives available in the market for minimizing the drawbacks of palm oil as a lubricant are ionic liquids, phosphorus, sulphur, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, metal, metal oxides, metal sulphides, carbonates, borates, carbon materials, organic materials, hexagonal boron nitride, alumina, CaO, CuO, ZnO, TiO2 and lanthanum borates. Few of them may not be environmental friendly. In line with market potentials and demand, it could be predicted that ROI of funding for the research and development of palm oil as a bio-lubricant may be significantly high. The study addresses tribological performance and properties, chemical modifications and formulation with additives of palm oil as a bio-lubricant.

Successful palm oil plantation should have high returns profit, clean and environmental friendly. Since oil palm trees have a long life and it takes years to be fully grown, controlling the felling rate of the palm oil trees is a fundamental challenge. It needs to be addressed in order to maximize oil production. However, a good arrangement of the felling palm oil trees may still affect the amount of carbon absorption. The objective of this study is to develop an optimal felling model of the palm oil plantation system taking into account both oil production and carbon absorption. The model facilitates in providing the optimal control of felling rate that results in maximizing both oil production and carbon absorption. With this aim, the model is formulated considering palm oil biomass, carbon absorption rate, oil production rate and the average prices of carbon and oil palm. A set of real data is used to estimate the parameters of the model and numerical simulation is conducted to highlight the application of the proposed model. The resulting parameter estimation is solved that leads to an optimal control of felling rate problem.

The conversion of palm oil into a sulfur-based polymer by copolymerization with sulfur powder at its molten state is herein reported. The obtained sulfur-containing polymer was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to demonstrate the successful conversion. The disappearance of the peaks related to vinylic groups of oil together with the appearance of a peak representing C-H rocking vibrations in the vicinity of C-S bonds confirmed the copolymerization of sulfur with oil. TGA revealed that the polymers have thermal stability up to 230°C under nitrogen and the polymers leave 10% sulfur-rich ash. DSC proved that a small amount of elemental sulfur remained unreacted in the polymer, which showed amorphous and heavily crosslinked structure resembling thermosets. These copolymers are an environmental-friendly polymeric material promoting the utilization of the abundant sulfur while also adding value to palm oil.

Status: PostprintThis study aims to analyze the potential aplication of of palm oil-based foamingagent as peat fires fighter in Indonesia. From literature review, it has been known that thefoaming agent able to form foam to extinguish fire, wrap and refrigerate the burning peat. It isnecessary to develop the production and application of foaming agent in Indonesia becausepeat fires occur almost every year that caused smoke haze. Potential raw material for theproduction of environmental friendly foaming agent as foam extinguishing for peat fires inIndonesia aong other is palm oil due to abundant availability, sustainable, and foam producteasily degraded in the environment of the burnt areas. Production of foaming agent as firefightingin Indonesia is one alternative to reduce the time to control the fire and smog disasterimpact. Application of palm oil as a raw material for fire-fighting is contribute to increase thevalue added and the development of palm oil downstream industry.

Palm oil is one of the leading commodities in the world market that contributes to the Indonesian economy. In fulfilling market demand but environmental friendly, the Indonesian government issued a policy of sustainable standards known as the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) principle. This study aims to determine the farmers' perception of ISPO in the community of oil palm farmers in West Java. This study designed as qualitative research. The results show that not all standards were sustainable. ISO has been applied to oil palm plantations in West Java. For this reason, government efforts were needed to assist farmers in implementing the ISPO.
