Exhaustion of rich ore deposits is making it necessary to bring low-grade ores into production, resulting in a sharply increased volume of excavated rock. Huge quantities of waste fill vast areas of the Earth's surface, with severe ecological effects. But the ecological damage could be reduced by extracting additional products from the tailings. Laseroluminescent sorting is a new technology by which this may be achieved. The most promising subjects are about 50 minerals including diamonds, native Au and Ag, ores of V, Pb, Zn, Sn, Li, Be, W, Mo, Zr, Sr, halite, apatite, phosphorite, fluorite, calcite, barite, anhydrite.

The decade of the 2000s was a period of boom and bust when, despite rising prosperity in general, there was increased inequality and heightened economic insecurity for most people in the world. The Survey reports tracked both causes and outcomes, taking a broader view of development that emphasized the importance of economic processes and structural change and recognized the effects of macro imbalances and financial instability, as well as the limits posed by ecological damage and social tensions. Several concerns—and possible solutions—outlined in the Survey reports still have major contemporary relevance, including the importance of countries adopting their own national development strategies and the need for international cooperation.

The visual appearance of oil spills at sea is often used as an indicator of spilled oil properties, state and slick thickness. These appearances and the oil properties that are associated with them are reviewed in this paper. The appearance of oil spills is an estimator of thickness of thin oil slicks, thinner than a rainbow sheen (<3 µm). Rainbow sheens have a strong physical explanation. Thicker oil slicks (e.g., >3 µm) are not correlated with a given oil appearance. At one time, the appearance of surface discharges from ships was thought to be correlated with discharge rate and vessel speed; however, this approach is now known to be incorrect. Oil on the sea can sometimes form water-in-oil emulsions, dependent on the properties of the oil, and these are often reddish in color. These can be detected visually, providing useful information on the state of the oil. Oil-in-water emulsions can be seen as a coffee-colored cloud below the water surface. Other information gleaned from the oil appearance includes coverage and distribution on the surface.

Spirituality for Seyyed Hossen Nasr is an inner reality that becomes a religious central in Islam. It is the esoteric dimension hidden in the reality of exoteric Islam. That view on spirituality brings Nasr to the philosophical thought that cannot be separated from religious metaphysical doctrine. Nasr argues that philosophy is more than just a ratio but also the activity of intellect that can reach the meta-cosmic nature to find the essence of truth namely the universal and eternal truth that lies behind the physical and relative truth. The philosophical efforts to find this truth are a combination of the optimizing potential of reason and intellectual intuition. Nasr refers to ḥikmah or wisdom as a kind of philosophy that combines logic and intellectual intuition. That philosophical view brings Nasr on a dualistic view of nature which not only has a cosmic dimension as such but also has a meta-cosmic dimension. This dualistic view is his fundamental reason in formulating the concept of metaphysical cosmology as a solution to the crisis of modern science that has caused a variety of ecological damage due to the secular vision.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i2.812

Research on two dispersants used to break up spilled oil suggests that the chemicals can kill or harm a widely–found shrimp important to estuary habitats. The toxicity increases in less salty water.
