Australia’s energy industry has evolved around a vertically integrated structure with exploration and production (E&P) companies carrying out production, processing and development of associated infrastructure, such as pipelines. We suggest the next innovation for productivity improvements is a ‘North American model’, whereby a midstream service industry develops, owns and operates shared gas processing and transport infrastructure, allowing the E&P sector to direct limited capital to focus on exploiting and marketing the resource without necessarily building or operating the associated infrastructure. E&P companies are being challenged by the lower oil prices, and balance sheets are under strain from high debt levels. Large joint ventures are no longer the natural owners of gas processing facilities as the original gas reserves decline and other reserve owners seek to use spare capacity. Junior explorers are also challenged as capital is redirected elsewhere while oil prices remain low. Herein we demonstrate that collaboration in shared infrastructure will restore value. Benefits to E&P companies include minimising upfront capital, lower unit cost through scale and sharing of risks with other projects and partners. Midstream infrastructure owners and operators can provide additional benefits because they typically have lower rates of return expectations, lower capital costs and debt premiums, have specialist knowledge and enable sharing of production and transportation costs. Through case studies, we outline the key commercial considerations from the perspective of both the explorer and the asset owner, demonstrate the potential financial benefits and promote further debate on what is stopping the development of this midstream service industry in Australia.

This paper uses customs figures to show that herring exports from the east and west coast lowlands expanded significantly in the last six decades of the sixteenth century. The paper argues that the rise was primarily due to the north-west Highland fisheries being opened up and exploited by east and west coast burghs. These ventures required greater capital supplies and more complex organisation than their local inshore fisheries and they were often interrupted by political hostilities. However, the costs were a fraction of those required to establish a deepwater buss fleet, enabling Scotland to expand production and take advantage of European demand for fish while minimising additional capital costs.

The article deals with the problem of waste disposal and, accordingly, landfills in the Moscow Region, which have now become the number 1 problem for the environment in Moscow and the Moscow Region. To solve this problem, incineration plants (IP) will be established in the near future. 4 plants will be located in the Moscow Region that will be able to eliminate 2800 thousand tons of waste per year. Burning of waste results in formation of slag making 25% of its volume, which has a very high temperature (1300.1500°C). An arrangement is considered, in which slag is sent to a water bath and heats the water to 50.90°C. This temperature is sufficient to evaporate any low-temperature substance (freons, limiting hydrocarbons, etc.), whereupon the steam of the low-temperature working medium is sent to a turbine, which produces additional electricity. The creation of a low-temperature thermal power plant (TPP) increases the reliability of electricity generation at the IP. The operation of low-temperature TPPs due to the heat of slag is very efficient, their efficiency factor being as high as 40.60%. In addition to the efficiency of TPPs, capital costs for the creation of additional devices at the IP are of great importance. Thermal power plants operating on slag are just such additional devices, so it is necessary to minimize the capital costs of their creation. In addition to equipment for the operation of TPPs, it is necessary to have a working medium in an amount determined by calculations. From the wide variety of working media, which are considered in the article, it is necessary to choose the substance with the lowest cost.

AbstractA new industrial revolution is on the verge in the energy domain considering the knowledge and skills acquired through the development of new energy technologies. Shale gas processing, unconventional oil exploitation, new exploring/drilling methods, mature renewable energy or in progress, all generated a wealth of knowledge in new technology. Therefore, this paper aims to analyse the positive and negative aspects of energy solutions, and to reveal the way to a world where a valid sustainable development, based on safe and rational premises, is actually considered. The paper also introduces suggestions for the energy system, which has a crucial importance in coping with the resource management of the future, where the economic, social, and environmental/climate needs of the post-crisis world should be suitably considered.

Upgrading of hoisting machines aims to improve their performance, to reduce risk of accidents, and to cut down operational and capital costs. One of the redesign solutions is replacement of steel cables by rubber cables. This novation can extend life of pulling members, decrease diameters of drive and guide wheels and, consequently, elements of the whole hoisting machines: rotor, reducing gear, motor. This engineering novation needs re-designing of hoisting machines; thus, the new design should be validated, in particular, strength characteristics of the machine members. This article considers a drive wheel of a hoisting machine with a pulling belt. In order to justify the potential range of design parameters with regard to safety factor, the numerical models of different-design drive wheels are developed and their operation with pulling belt (rubber cable) is simulated in the SolidWorks environment. The data on the stress state of the wheel elements are analyzed, the most loaded points are identified, and the maximal stresses on the sidewall surface and in the spokes of wheels of different designs are plotted.
