A thirty-seven year old, East Indian female was admitted to St. Michael's Hospital on July 26, 1979 complaining of headache, diplopia, nausea and vomiting.In April of 1978 she was referred to a neurologist for investigation of headache. Neurological examination was normal. An X-ray of her skull revealed a lytic lesion, 2 cms. in diameter, in the right frontal area. A bone scan showed no abnormality. Further study was refused. A left facial “birth mark” was noted.

Low temperature x-ray microanalysis (LTXM) of solid biological materials has been documented for Lemna minor L. root tips. This discussion will be limited to a demonstration of LTXM for measuring relative elemental distributions of P,S,Cl and K species within whole cells of tobacco leaves.Mature Wisconsin-38 tobacco was grown in the greenhouse at the University of California, Berkeley and picked daily from the mid-stalk position (leaf #9). The tissue was excised from the right of the mid rib and rapidly frozen in liquid nitrogen slush. It was then placed into an Amray biochamber and maintained at 103K. Fracture faces of the tissue were prepared and carbon-coated in the biochamber. The prepared sample was transferred from the biochamber to the Amray 1000A SEM equipped with a cold stage to maintain low temperatures at 103K. Analyses were performed using a tungsten source with accelerating voltages of 17.5 to 20 KV and beam currents from 1-2nA.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by expression of both mela-nocytic and smooth muscle markers. Only 10 primary malignant lung PEComas have been reported up to date. We report a 59-year-old male who presented with a lung neoplasm, found during the routine X-ray examination. Preoperative CT-scan revealed the 3,5-cm-sized mass, located at the border of the upper, middle and lower lobes of the right lung. Patient underwent a thoracotomy, resection of the upper, middle and lower lobes of the right lung accompanied with mediastinal lymphadenectomy. After surgery, chylothorax was revealed. Conservative treatment was unsuccessful, so we performed laparoscopic clipping of the thoracic lymph duct. Patient was dismissed from hospital on the 10-th day after the second operation in good condition. In this report, we intend to increase the limited knowledge relating to natural history and optimal treatment of such a rare condition as a primary malignant lung PEComa.

An 8-month-old boy presented with right hemiplegia of sudden onset after 20 days of Kawasaki disease, which was not initially treated by gamma globulin. Cranial X-ray computed tomography confirmed cerebral infarction as the cause of the right hemiplegia. In subsequent weeks, he developed multiple thromboses in coronary aneurysms. He successfully underwent intracoronary thrombolysis using tissue plasminogen activator without haemorrhagic complications. Cerebral infarction as a complication of Kawasaki disease is rare, and is a difficult clinical situation to manage.

At birth, the transition to newborn life is triggered by lung aeration, which stimulates a large increase in pulmonary blood flow (PBF). Current theories predict that the increase in PBF is spatially related to ventilated lung regions as they aerate after birth. Using simultaneous phase-contrast X-ray imaging and angiography we investigated the spatial relationships between lung aeration and the increase in PBF after birth. Six near-term (30-day gestation) rabbits were delivered by caesarean section, intubated and an intravenous catheter inserted, before they were positioned for X-ray imaging. During imaging, iodine was injected before ventilation onset, after ventilation of the right lung only, and after ventilation of both lungs. Unilateral ventilation increased iodine levels entering both left and right pulmonary arteries (PAs) and significantly increased heart rate, iodine ejection per beat, diameters of both left and right PAs, and number of visible vessels in both lungs. Within the 6th intercostal space, the mean gray level (relative measure of iodine level) increased from 68.3 ± 11.6 and 70.3 ± 7.5%·s to 136.3 ± 22.6 and 136.3 ± 23.7%·s in the left and right PAs, respectively. No differences were observed between vessels in the left and right lungs, despite the left lung not initially being ventilated. The increase in PBF at birth is not spatially related to lung aeration allowing a large ventilation/perfusion mismatch, or pulmonary shunting, to occur in the partially aerated lung at birth.

We did this research to observe the effect of LIPUS on long bone fracture repair and caveolin-1, β-catenin signaling expression in the radius defects of rabbits, to explore its possible molecular mechanisms. 24 male New Zealand rabbits with bilateral radial bone defects were divided into 4 groups randomly, n = 6. The right side had daily LIPUS exposure for 20 minutes, while the left received sham treatment. After 7, 14, 21, 28 days, respectively, fracture healing was observed by X-ray imaging and Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan, specimens were harvested for histology, immunohistochemistry, and gene expression analysis. We found that LIPUS brought forward endochondral ossification, increased the bone callus size without changes in Bone Mineral Density (BMD). The caveolin-1 expression increased first then decreased, while the β-catenin kept growing during the process. These demonstrated that caveolin-1 participated in fracture healing accelerated by LIPUS, which was speculated to play a dual role in β-catenin signaling expression.

Complications related to the T tube drainage of the common bile duct are not uncommon. Some, like dislocations of the T tube out of the common bile duct, could be very serious, particularly if developed during the first few days after surgery, when the abdominal drain in the subhepatic space had been already removed. Then, an emergency reoperation might be necessary. The slip of the T tube upwards or downwards inside the common bile duct is not so rare. Fortunately, it is less dangerous and can usually be resolved without reoperation. It takes place several days after surgery, followed by the right subcostal pain, occasionally with temperature, rise of the bilirubin and with decrease or complete cessation of the bile drainage through the T tube. The diagnosis can be made only on the basis of T tube cholangiography. The re-establishment of the proper T tube position must be done under X-ray visualization. Seven cases of the T tube slip within the common bile duct, its clinical presentation, diagnosis and method of repositioning were presented. Possible mechanism of complication was described. As far as we know, the complications have not been described by other authors.

Background: A mass in the right iliac fossa is a common diagnostic problem encountered in clinical practice, requiring skill in diagnosis. Methods: 100 patients with signs and symptoms of right iliac fossa mass admitted in Hospital were identified and were studied by taking detailed clinical history, physical examination and were subjected to various investigations like x ray erect abdomen, chest x-ray, contrast x-ray . Result: In this study of out of 100 cases, 65.00% of cases were related to appendicular pathology either in the form of appendicular mass or appendicular abscess. There were 12.00% cases of ileocaecal tuberculosis. Conclusion: Appendicular lump remains the most common cause for right iliac fossa pain. Abstract Retained austenite can be disastrous or increase the life of heat treated components. However, discussions on the right amount of retained austenite are only meaningful when measured correctly. The proper determination in microstructures samples requires a trained metallurgist and remains to be very subjective to the individual’s eye. Company standards of microstructure tables are used as individual solution. However, factual results are only achievable with the use of an X-ray diffractometer. This paper discusses the practical experience of metallurgical results and shows state of the art solutions as today’s standard.
