A high-frequency multi-port (HFMP) direct current (DC) to DC converter is presented. The proposed HFMP is utilized to interface a photovoltaic (PV) system. The presented HFMP is compact and can perform maximum power point tracking. It consists of a high-frequency transformer with many identical input windings and one output winding. Each input winding is connected to a PV module through an H-bridge inverter, and the maximum PV power is tracked using the perturb and observe (P&O) technique. The output winding is connected to a DC bus through a rectifier. The detailed analysis and operation of the proposed HFMP DC-DC converter are presented. Extensive numerical simulations are conducted, using power system computer aided design (PSCAD)/electromagnetic transients including DC (EMTDC) software, to evaluate the operation and dynamic behavior of the proposed PV interfacing scheme. In addition, an experimental setup is built to verify the performance of the HFMP DC-DC converter.

With the development of large-scale new energy, the wind–thermal bundled system transmitted via high-voltage direct current (HVDC) has become the main method to solve the problem of wind power consumption. At the same time, the problem of subsynchronous oscillation among wind power generators, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), and synchronous generators (SGs) has become increasingly prominent. According to the dynamic interaction among doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs), HVDC, and SGs, a linearization model of DFIGs and SGs transmitted via HVDC is established, and the influence of the electromagnetic transient of wind turbines and HVDC on the electromechanical transient processes of SGs is studied. Using the method of additional excitation signal injection, the influence of the main factors of DFIG on the damping characteristics of each torsional mode of SG is analyzed, including control parameters and operation conditions when the capacity of HVDC is fixed. The mechanism of the negative damping torsional of SGs is identified. A time-domain simulation model is built in Electromagnetic Transients including DC/Power Systems Computer Aided Design (EMTDC/PSCAD) to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.

AbstractThis paper presents a study on the performance of a fourth rail direct current (DC) urban transit affected by an indirect lightning strike. The indirect lightning strike was replicated and represented by a lightning-induced overvoltage by means of the Rusck model, with the sum of two Heidler functions as its lightning channel base current input, on a perfect conducting ground. This study aims to determine whether an indirect lightning strike has any influence with regard to the performance of the LRT Kelana Jaya line, a fourth rail DC urban transit station arrester. The simulations were carried out using the Electromagnetic Transients Program–Restructured Version (EMTP–RV), which includes the comparison performance results between the 3EB4-010 arrester and PDTA09 arrester when induced by a 90 kA (9/200 µs). The results demonstrated that the PDTA09 arrester showed better coordination with the insulated rail bracket of the fourth rail. It allowed a lower residual voltage and a more dynamic response, eventually resulting in better voltage gradient in the pre-breakdown region and decreased residual voltage ratio in the high current region.

Purpose – The per-unit-length earth return mutual impedance of the overhead conductors plays an important role for analyzing electromagnetic transients or couplings of multi-conductor systems. It is impossible to have a closed-form expression to evaluate this kind of impedance. The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient numerical approach to evaluate the earth return mutual impedance of the overhead conductors above horizontally multi-layered soils. Design/methodology/approach – The expression of the earth return mutual impedance, which contains a complex highly oscillatory semi-infinite integral, is divided into two parts intentionally, i.e. the definite and the tail integral, respectively. The definite integral is calculated using the proposed moment functions after fitting the integrand into the piecewise cubic spline functions, and the tail integral is replaced by exponential integrals with newly developed asymptotic integrands. Findings – The numerical examples show the proposed approach has a satisfactory accuracy for different parameter combinations. Compared to the direct quadrature approach, the computational time of the proposed approach is very competitive, especially, for the large horizontal distance and the low height of the conductors. Originality/value – The advantage of the proposed approach is that the calculation of the highly oscillatory integral is completely avoided due to the fact that the moment function can be evaluated analytically. The contribution of the tail integral is well included by means of the exponential integral, though in an asymptotic way. The proposed approach is completely general, and can be applied to calculate the earth return mutual impedance of overhead conductors above a soil structure with an arbitrary number of horizontal layers.
