Early Information

In this paper, we present a system for tracking and provide early information of hazardous locationsin huge gatherings. It is based on optic flow estimations and detects sequences of crowd motion that are characteristic for devastating congestions. For optic flow computation, Lucas- Kanade method is employed to determine the optical flow vectors for the gathered video. Segmentation of video sequences is done and optic flow is determined for respective segments. A threshold optic flow is chosen in such a way that the tracking of congested area in video is easilydoneby comparing it with respective segment’s determined optic flow values. Finally, we present the location of crowd congestion which helps in taking further protective measures to handle unusual events.

This article describes how fault tolerance is an essential issue for many WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) applications such as wildlife monitoring, battlefield surveillance and health monitoring. It represents a great challenge for researchers regarding to the characteristics of sensor nodes which are prone to failures due essentially to their limited resources. Faults may occur, not only when sensor nodes exhaust their energy, but also when the congestion phenomenon emerges, because of a high traffic in the network and limited storage capacity of the sensor nodes. In order to support fault tolerance in WSNs, the authors propose a new scheme which incorporates a link quality estimation algorithm and a congestion detection mechanism to enable nodes that present high quality links to be chosen for routing in a non-congested area in case of faults. Evaluations through simulations under NS2 show that our proposed protocol tolerates faults with a minimum cost relatively to HEEP protocol and improves network's performances comparatively to other fault tolerant protocols such as EF-LEACH.

In this paper, excavations for the construction of a tall building with deep basements in a congested area in Rome, close to the Tiber river are described. The project was technically challenging due to the close proximity of existing buildings, the interaction with the river, and the poor geotechnical properties of the alluvial deposits. This well-documented case study addresses the geotechnical and structural issues involved in the development of the design and construction process. Particular attention is focused on the prediction of excavation-induced displacements and on the efficiency of the water wells introduced to increase safety margins against the hydraulic uplift of the excavation bottom.

In the vicinity of an excavation in a saturated soil, ground settlements are often caused by the combined effects of stress release and drawdown of the water table. These settlements may be crucial if the excavation is carried out in a congested area. A case history of excavation adjacent to closely constructed blocks of buildings is discussed in this study. Ground settlements and water-surface levels were monitored during the excavation period, as the settlement of the surrounding area was of concern. The authors have previously developed a fully coupled numerical method that allows the computation of the displacements and pore pressures in a soil taking account of the drawdown of the water table which may accompany excavation. This method is used here for back-analysis of a full-scale excavation that has been comprehensively documented. Comparisons between the field measurements and the calculated results are given in this paper. Key words : consolidation, excavation, finite element, seepage, transient unconfined flow.

In China, finding a vacant parking space in a congested area or a large parking lot is always time consuming and frustrating. To minimize hassle and inconvenience to the automatic drivers, this paper proposed a novel smart parking system which consists of many parking sensor nodes and one parking gateway in one large parking lot. Parking sensor node is used as vehicle occupancy detector and parking gateway is used as parking lot manager. All parking sensor nodes compose wireless sensor networks with Zigbee transmission protocol. With the GPRS/3G transmission function of parking gateway, large parking lot can provide friendly parking information to the running vehicles and subscribed users. In a word, the proposed novel smart parking system is provided with innovative and practicability.

Pollutant emissions are considered to be a major threat to air quality and human health in urban areas. Therefore, accurate modeling and assessment tools are required. In this study, a model was done by the integration of machine learning algorithms and a geographic information system model. This model included the optimization of the support vector regression model by using the principal component analysis algorithm. Then, the integration of the regression model with spatial analysis modeling via a grid (100 x 100 m) was done in order to generate prediction maps during holidays and workdays in the daytime and at nighttime in a highly congested area in Baghdad city, Iraq. The data used in this study categorized into two categories. The first category is the data acquired through field surveying that includes temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and traffic flow data (e.g., the number of light and heavy vehicles), as well as carbon monoxide samples by using mobile equipment. The second category is the information derived from geographic information system data, such as land use, road network, and building height. The accuracy of the proposed model is 81%, and the lowest value of root mean square error was 0.067 ppm. The integration between air pollution models and geographic information system techniques could be a promising tool for urban air quality assessment and urban planning. These tools effectively utilized by stakeholders and decision-makers to outline proper plans and strategies to mitigate air pollutants in urban areas.
