The chapter starts by describing public transport in Dar es Salaam as ‘functional chaos’. It then critically reviews two thematic literatures, on African cities and on their informal economies, to reveal that references to chaos, dystopia, and their opposites, order and functionalism, are common. The key argument is that a highly contextual understanding of urban informality and of how African cities work is required to avoid overly deterministic structural accounts and romantic celebration of African agency without due attention to structural constraints. The chapter presents the book’s approach: namely a political-economy analysis, centred on class analysis and wary of automatically reading off the political interests of actors from their class position. It argues that neoliberalism and post-socialism are key to understanding Tanzania and public transport in Dar es Salaam, and calls for grounding ‘actually existing neoliberalism’ in a particular context while retaining the analytical power of the concept of neoliberalism.

Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a useful tool to find possible flaws, to reduce cost and to shorten research cycle in complex industrial systems. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) has gained credibility over the past years, not only in nuclear industry, but also in other industries like aerospace, petrochemical, and weapon. Both FMEA and FTA are effective techniques in safety analysis, but there are still many uncertain factors in them that are not well addressed until now. This paper combines FMEA and FTA based on Dynamic Uncertain Causality Graph (DUCG) to solve this issue. Firstly, the FMEA model is mapped into a corresponding DUCG graph. Secondly, FTA model is mapped into a corresponding DUCG graph. Thirdly, combine the above DUCG graphs. Finally, users can modify the combined DUCG graph and calculations are made. This paper bridges the gap between FMEA and FTA by combining the two methods using DUCG. And additional modeling power and analytical power can be achieved with the advantages of the combined DUCG safety analysis model and its inference algorithm. This method can also promote the application of DUCG in the system reliability and safety analysis. An example is used to illustrate this method.

A general analytical power-series solution of the Gibbs–Duhem equation in multicomponent systems of any number of components has been developed. The simplicity and usefulness of the solution is made possible through the choice of a special set of composition variables.

A study of the online browsing and purchasing habits of some 1,400 outbound travelers in Hong Kong demonstrates the analytical power of weight-of-evidence (WOE) data mining. The WOE approach allows analysts to identify and transform the variables with the most predictive power regarding the likelihood of tourists’ online preferences and decisions. The study found that just over one-third of the respondents browsed hotel-related websites, and about half of those browsers had booked a room on those sites. Browsers in Hong Kong tended to be young, well educated, and well traveled. Those who used the hotel websites for purchases were, of course, part of the browser group, and were likewise relatively well educated. However, one unexpected variable set off those who used the websites for a hotel purchase, the length of their most recent trip. One possible reason is that long-haul tourists want to be sure of their accommodations, or this may reflect hotels’ free-night offers. The convenient use of model-based customer segmentation and decision rules would help hospitality practitioners effectively manage their marketing resources and activities, and enhance information-based marketing strategies to attract target customers.

This article shows how the technical hype of 1990s has been transformed into the e-business organizations at the beginning of the 21st century. The authors took an interpretive stance in this study, grounded theory, and investigated the ontology of virtual organization by the metaphorical analysis. The metaphorical analysis adopted in this study provides the analytical power to conceptualize the social structure of virtual organization in the context of structuration theory with the process of grounded theory. As the e-business structuration indicates in this study, virtualization, the metaphor of virtual organization is interpreted as flexible domination, where the rational relationships in power distribution with other e-business characterized temporal (virtual) bond with low switching costs.
