Glycocalyx is the name given by Bennett to the extracellular glycoprotein coat present in some cell surfaces. It appears to play an important role in cell properties such as antigenicity, cell adhesivity, specific permeability, and ATP ase activity. In the sperm this coat can be directly related to such important phenomena as capacitation and fertilization. The presence of glycocalyx in invertebrate spermatozoa has already been demonstrated. Recently Yanagimachi et al. has determined the negative charges on sperm surfaces of mammalian spermatozoa including man, using colloidal iron hydroxide. No mention was made however of the outer surface coat as composed of substances other than those confering a negative charge. The purpose of this work was therefore to determine the presence of a glycocalyx in human spermatozoa using alcian blue and lanthanum staining.

This paper demonstrates an integrative 3D model of short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral mapping and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based digital elevation model (DEM) for a carbonate rock outcrop including limestone and dolostone in a field condition. The spectral characteristics in the target outcrop showed the limestone well coincided with the reference spectra, while the dolostone did not show clear absorption features compared to the reference spectra, indicating a mixture of clay minerals. The spectral indices based on SWIR hyperspectral images were derived for limestone and dolostone using aluminum hydroxide (AlOH), hydroxide (OH), iron hydroxide (FeOH), magnesium hydroxide (MgOH) and carbonate ion (CO32−) absorption features based on random forest and logistic regression models with an accuracy over 87%. Given that the indices were derived from field data with consideration of commonly occurring geological units, the indices have better applicability for real world cases. The integrative 3D geological model developed by co-registration between hyperspectral map and UAV-based DEM using best matching SIFT descriptor pairs showed the 3D rock formations between limestone and dolostone. Moreover, additional geological information of the outcrop was extracted including thickness, slope, rock classification, strike, and dip.

The comparative analysis of quality indicators of asphalt concrete and methods of their control is discussed in the present article. Classifications of modifiers for improving the quality of asphalt concrete are given. Novel nanoscale modifier for the improvement the resistance to climatic influences on asphalt is developed. The nanomodifier is based on sols of iron hydroxide and silicic acid. Nanomodification consists in processing of the mineral component by nanomodifier; such processing leads to the formation of nanoscale layer on the surface of the mineral carrier. As a mineral carrier we propose a highly porous mineral diatomite powder. The influence of the nanomodifier on the weathering resistance of asphalt concrete is investigated. Resistance to climatic influences was estimated by loss of strength after one nominal year of exposure. To simulate environmental impacts, an environmental chamber was used. The specimens were held in conditions that correspond to combination of summer and winter climate. One nominal year of exposure included 10 cycles of variable water saturation-drying at a temperature of 20 °C and 10 cycles of freezing-thawing (freezing was performed at –20 °C, thawing – at 20 °C). Saturation-drying and freezing-thawing duration was four hours. It was shown that by means of nanomodification the weathering resistance can be increased by 36 %.

ABSTRACTLearning how to purify and manipulate single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) presents a unique challenge in material science. The processing-related difficulties of these long nano-fibers stem from their high aspect ratio, rigidity and the profound hydrophobic attractions along their tubular walls. Shortening them into discrete segments, with lengths from tens to hundreds of nanometers, presents a viable methodology to alleviate the shape-induced intractability. In addition, the metal-assisted self-organization of these nanosized objects into nano-forest geometries with dense perpendicular surface grafting, demonstrates that such nanosized objects hold significant promise for the development of nanoscale devices. This paper will present an extensive characterization of the topological characteristics of these assemblies, along with their surface coverage, growth characteristics and height fluctuation on iron hydroxide substrates.
